    No full text

In this article I will briefly overview the long and sometimes fruitful relationship between cinema and TV series, since cases of adaptation from TV serial narratives to feature films and vice versa are present in American entertainment industry since the birth of television. I will then focus on the Italian situation that is much different from the American one: in Italy these forms of adaptation are rather rare and there are very few cases until the arrival of Sky Italia. In the past 10 years Sky Italia has invested a lot of money and resources into transmedia projects. After a brief overview of Sky’s most significant achievements in this field, I will then focus on the case of Gomorra, a winning example of adaptation of a matrix content into different media,

Convergenza e Divergenza.

The Evolution of Characters in TV Series: Morphology, Selection, and Remarkable Cases in Narrative Ecosystem

    No full text
The aim of this chapter is to study vast narratives (Harrigan and Wardrip-Fruin, 2009) according to the theoretical paradigm named narrative ecosystems. Among vast narratives we will focus on TV series which, better than other audiovisual productions, have become increasingly complex (Mittell 2015) and multifaceted objects that need a crossdisciplinary and systemic perspective to be analysed. As far as TV series are taken into consideration, the chapter will focus on a specific portion of these narrations, that is to say the characters and their evolution within the long lasting narrative arch of a TV show. In analogy with the natural ecosystems, in order to study a narrative ecosystem and in relation to all the features we will focus on, it is required to adopt a holistic approach that would consider direct and indirect interactions among multiple objects. In particular, this chapter will focus on the study of the morphology of the TV serial narrative formats, discussing the selection and evolution patterns that affect their characters and that lead to the development of different narrative formats. In order to talk about the morphological aspects of TV serial narratives, we need to concentrate on some of their features. First of all, we will address the issue of narrative ecosystems and the need for a dynamic model of analysis able to take into account the complex mode of operation of this kind of productions. Afterwards, we will cover the issue of selection models and from them we will draw on the TV series possible configurations

    No full text

This article is focused on the complexities of contemporary media scenario, considering the interplay between industrial frameworks, market dynamics, and resultant content exploitation. The paper seeks to chart the current landscape of serial production and posit potential trajectories for its future development. At its core, the research addresses two principal dimensions: the contemporary industrial structure and the relevance of library content. Within the industrial context, the article scrutinizes the role of streaming platforms and the rise of Free Ad-supported Streaming TV (FAST) services. The concept of “neo-generalism” is also introduced as a new framework, characterized by diversified offerings within a single platform that cater to an array of consumer preferences and needs.  With regards to the importance of library content, the article underscores how archival materials serve not only as a supplementary feature but also as a strategic asset in competitive positioning. Furthermore, the dynamics between broadcasters and platforms are investigated, highlighting the hybrid strategies that are emerging from this relationship. Lastly, new paradigms of serial content consumption are explored, specifically focusing on the recent behavioral shifts spurred by the on-demand culture
