    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Two-site anyonic Josephson junction

    Anyons are particles with intermediate quantum statistics whose wave function acquires a phase eiθ by particle exchange. Inspired by proposals of simulating anyons using ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices, we study a two-site anyonic Josephson junction, i.e., anyons confined in a one-dimensional double-well potential. We show, analytically and numerically, that many properties of anyonic Josephson junctions, such as Josephson frequency, imbalanced solutions, macroscopic quantum self-trapping, coherence visibility, and condensate fraction, crucially depend on the anyonic angle θ. Our theoretical predictions are a solid benchmark for near-future experimental quantum simulations of anyonic matter in double-well potentials

    Micro-markers: microRNAs in cancer diagnosis and prognosis

    Molecular diagnostics in cancer should provide the highest specificity and sensitivity in classification, prognostic stratification and early detection. MicroRNAs could contribute to hit the mark, or at least to come nearer, in virtue of their cancer-specific expression and stability. Indeed, differently from other RNA classes, microRNAs can be detected and quantified not only in frozen tissues, but also in formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissues as well as serum/plasma samples. Thus, microRNA studies have quickly moved from research on the molecular basis of cancer to areas of clinical application. This review summarizes the potential role of microRNAs as molecular markers for cancer classification, prognostic stratification and drug-response prediction. It also summarizes their potential as circulating markers and cancer-predisposing genes. If we consider that studies on microRNAs in cancer therapy have already given important contributions, microRNAs already had an impact in all cancer areas. Whether this will translate into clinical applications is still too early to say. However, in the diagnostic field, microRNAs may already represent an improvement over presently available approaches: for example, their expression profile is effective in the identification of metastasis tissue of origin. In addition, circulating microRNAs are expected to provide improved specificity and/or sensitivity over presently available markers

    The glucose-regulated MiR-483-3p influences key signaling pathways in cancer

    The hsa-mir-483 gene, located within the IGF2 locus, transcribes for two mature microRNAs, miR-483-5p and miR-483-3p. This gene, whose regulation is mediated by the the CTNNB1/USF1 complex, shows an independent expression from its host gene IGF2. The miR-483-3p affects the Wnt/-catenin, the TGF-, and the TP53 signaling pathways by targeting several genes as CTNNB1, SMAD4, IGF1, and BBC3. Accordingly, miR-483-3p is associated with various tissues specific physiological properties as insulin and melanin production, as well as with cellular physiological functions such as wounding, differentiation, proliferation, and survival. Deregulation of miR-483-3p is observed in different types of cancer, and its overexpression can inhibit the pro-apoptotic pathway induced by the TP53 target effectors. As a result, the oncogenic characteristics of miR-483-3p are linked to the effect of some of the most relevant cancer-related genes, TP53 and CTNNB1, as well as to one of the most important cancer hallmark: the aberrant glucose metabolism of tumor cells. In this review, we summarize the recent findings regarding the miR-483-3p, to elucidate its functional role in physiological and pathological contexts, focusing overall on its involvement in cancer and in the TP53 pathway

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
