Who is the author of the 1876 Stefano manuscript?
For over one hundred years the Stefano manuscript was a private document in the possession of the Baccich family and descendants. It told a story of the 1875 Stefano shipwreck as narrated by the shipwreck survivor and the founding family patriarch Miho Baccich. In these circumstances the question of authorship of the manuscript was immaterial and did not arise as an issue. However, with the publication of the manuscript the author‟s name, or names, need to be formally attributed to it. It turns out that this is not such a clear-cut matter.
As we shall see, all informed sources attributed the authorship, and the ownership, of the manuscript to Miho Baccich. But the manuscript itself was written by Canon Stjepan Skurla – a priest from Miho‟s hometown of Dubrovnik. The question then arises: should Skurla also be considered as an author of the manuscript, or, even as the sole author (as some would have it)

Stefano Colonna giudica positivamente il libro, pubblicato da Leo Olschki, limitandosi a sottolineare che alcune opere, inserite come autografe dall’autore, presentino differenti qualità.

Stefano Buono* speaks to Commissioning Editor, Sebastian Dennis-Beron: Stefano Buono is the Chief Executive Officer, a member of the board of directors, and a founder of Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA). He has been responsible for overseeing AAA operations, including the development and commercialization of the current portfolio of diagnostic and therapeutic molecular nuclear medicine products, and listing AAA on Nasdaq (stock symbol: AAAP). Prior to founding the company in 2002, he worked as a physicist at the Centre for Advanced Studies, Research and Development, or CRS4, in Italy. During his 6-year tenure with CRS4, he headed a team of engineers working on different international research projects in the field of energy production and nuclear waste transmutation. Before working at CRS4, and alongside his appointment at CRS4, he worked with Physics Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubbia at The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world’s largest research laboratory for particle physics, in Geneva, Switzerland. Preventive effects of broccoli bioactives : role on Oxidative stress and cancer risk
Cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli) seem to have an important role in cancer prevention, as suggested by the results of several epidemiological studies showing an inverse association between their consumption and cancer risk at several sites. This class of vegetables contains several antioxidants and provides glucosinolates, which are converted to isothiocyanates and indoles, the bioactives believed to be responsible for most of the protection against cancer development. Numerous mechanisms of action have been studied; they involve interconnected signaling pathways important for cancer growth and progression including the direct and indirect effect on oxidative stress, and modulation of phase I and phase II enzymes and of epigenetic mechanisms. In particular, brassica vegetables may contribute to reducing free radical-related molecular damage in subjects, such as smokers, with high exposure to oxidative stress. In this regard, the effect of broccoli intake on biomarkers of oxidative stress and cancer risk in smokers is briefly discussed
Craft beer microflora identification before and after a cleaning process
Although beer is a relatively safe product, growth of spoilage
microorganisms can cause economic damage. The most effective
way to prevent the spoilage of beer is to control contamination
with adequate cleaning and sanitation. The aim of this work was
to evaluate the microbial flora present both before and after a
specific hygiene process was implemented during a brewpub’s
craft beer production. Various selective and differential culture
media methods for the enumeration of beer-spoilage species are
available, but they are time consuming compared to modern
techniques. The utilisation of accurate molecular methods,
added to the routine microbiological analyses, allowed for the
fast identification of common environmental contaminants of
beer. A poor sanitation plan by the brewer resulted in microbial
contamination of the brewpub. This result demonstrates the importance
of good sanitation to avoid the presence of undesirable
microorganisms in the product. A cleaning-in-place (CIP)
method, in operation in many small breweries, could be utilised
to prevent the occurrence of such brewery and beer microbial
contaminants. In small breweries, the simplest CIP units consist
of a single tank and a portable pump. This method requires no
additional equipment besides a spraying ball, which is usually
included in the design of most tanks
A Sentence Structure-based Approach to Unsupervised Author Identification
Assessing whether two documents were written by the same author is a crucial task, especially in the Internet age, with possible applications to philology and forensics.
The problem has been tackled in the literature by exploiting frequency-based approaches, numeric techniques or writing style analysis. Focusing on this last perspective, this paper proposes a novel technique that takes into account the structure of sentences, assuming that it is strictly related to the author's writing style. Specifically, a (collection of) text(s) in natural language written by a given author is translated into a set of First-Order Logic descriptions, and a model of the author's writing habits is obtained as the result of clustering these descriptions. Then, if an overlapping exists between the models of a known author and of an unknown one, the conclusion can be drawn that they are the same person. Among the advantages of this approach, it does not need a training phase, and performs well also on short texts and/or small collections
