Eleven isolates of Enterococcus faecalis causing endocarditis were screened for possible virulence factors with PCR and phenotypic assays. The gene coding for the enterococcal surface protein (esp) was detected in one isolate only, and haemolysin was produced by two isolates. Aggregation substance, biofilm formation and gelatinase were present in seven, nine and eight isolates,
respectively. Predisposing factors, particularly hospitalisation and multiple antibiotic therapy, appeared to be more relevant to the development of enterococcal endocarditis following bloodstream infections than the pattern of virulence factors
Zhanr nadpisi v tvorchestve G. R. Derzhavina (Stichi na smert' sobaki)
The article draws attention to the insufficiently studied genre of inscription of the 18th century. Important studies have been devoted to the small poetic forms of the epigram and the epitaph of the period, but the inscription, because of the vagueness of the exact genre defi nition, has not yet received due attention. The article offers a general preliminary outline of the data concerning this genre in the 18th century, and the analysis of certain inscriptions in the works by Derzhavin
Gajto Gazdanov: l’appropriarsi della citazione
The paper examines different types of quotations in the early prose of an Ossetian-born Russian émigré writer Gajto Gazdanov (1903-1971). The analysis is divided into three parts: 1) the description of the Author’s biography, works and figure within the context of the first wave of the Russian emigration; 2) the identification and the definition of the dominant intertextual processes in Gazdanov’s prose: direct quotations (of a text, a work, a title), epigraphs, stylisations (i.e. the conscious imitation of the style of a writer); 3) the detailed analysis of these procedures in three emblematic texts: Tovarishch Brak (1928), entirely built on the subtext of A. Pushkin’s works; The Dragon (1928), which quotes the title of a story by E. Zamiatin and reworks its plot; The adventurer (1930), a stylisation of a prose by E. A. Poe with Poe himself as the main character. The reference to classic Russian and foreign authors in the writer’s early prose has the function of literary experimentation and it would have been refined over the years. This characteristic, which makes Gazdanov ‘strange’ for the contemporary emigration critics, marks instead his early adoption of postmodernist procedures
Enhancing the strategic alignment between environmental drivers of sustainability and the performance management system in Italian manufacturing firms
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide managers with suitable strategic KPIs in decision-making processes, which aim to integrate the environmental dimension of sustainability at a business level in manufacturing organisations. Design/methodology/approach In view of the research proposal addressed, semi-structured interviews were conducted, based on theoretical milestones of the performance management system (PMS), with 48 managers that work in Italian manufacturing firms and specialise in green practices. Findings The authors developed a novel environmentally performed framework to adequately integrate environmental value drivers at a strategic level. Practical implications The resulting issues addressed in this paper, and their integration in the business strategy for managing environmental complexity, allows contributing, firstly, to the existing literature by suggesting the relevant key value drivers that need to be mostly studied from an accounting point of view. In addition, from these results, though their experience managers will have up-to-date key measures that could, in the future, help the integration process between the environmental aspect of the sustainability dimension and the PMS. Originality/value The results generate a robust roadmap for future analysis in this research field. Accordingly, the paper engenders a strategic alignment in the green transition process, providing scholars and practitioners with a clear view of the key sustainable drivers, metrics and potential solutions that have not been addressed to date
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
