Mixed paradigms : combining participatory and positivist research methods : Guyanese case studies
iii, 99 leaves ; 28 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 93-99).The debate between proponents of participatory and positivist research methodologies has been long and at times heated, but in four months research work in Guyana, the author found elements of the two paradigms melding. Positivist researchers are found to be less than completely objective in practice, while participatory researchers adopt positivist tools for use in their studies. In short, hard drawn lines of demarkation between the two schools of thought become blurred in the field.
The implications of this blending of methodologies are explored, both theoretically and in the light of practical experience. Can field researchers not have the best of both worlds, combining positivist and participatory methods as these fulfill research needs? Or are the two approaches worlds apart, with practices appropriate to one invalidating the results and conclusions of the other? The key to the puzzle lies in who sets the research agenda and controls the generation of knowledge
The development of foreign direct investment in a rapidly growing economy : the case of China as of 1979
x, 114 leaves : ill., maps ; 28 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 107-114).In recent years, China became the largest Foreign Direct Investment recipient after the United States in the world, China's economy has achieved great progress since 1979 when China started reform and opening up of its economy to the outside world. Foreign Direct Investment, particularly those from the overseas Chinese sources through Hong Kong and Macao played an important role in China's economic catch-up. In this thesis, the author analyzes the development and characters of FDI in China over the last two decades, with special attention on the role of Hong Kong's investment in China, which has always made a lion's share of the total FDI since 1979. This study finds that FDI is one of the leading powers behind China's rapid economic growth in the last two decades. The affinity of culture and language between Mainland China and Hong Kong facilitated the inflow of FDI. In the new millennium, China is determined to rise as an advanced industrial country. FDI will continue to play a crucial role in China's catch-up effort. (Abstract shortened by UMI.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Islanders and the land : a multi-disciplinary approach to the culture of the land struggle in Prince Edward Island
vii, 171 leaves ; 28 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 144-171).This study is an attempt to put the perceptions of rural Islanders at the centre of analysis, particularly regarding the way they view the land and perceive the forces that are changing its use and ownership. It is my thesis that an understanding of the views shaped by Islanders' struggle for the land in the nineteenth century is crucial in order to grasp the awareness of the appreciation and ties to the land today.
I take the view of culture as the collective output that defines a society's identity, its values and its distinctive character. It relates the past to the present and to the future. I rely on the oral and folksong tradition as a statement of this culture. I also take an ecological viewpoint of the changing relationship between the land environment and culture that gives us a perspective to the struggle concerning land ownership and use over the past quarter century on Prince Edward Island
The social and economic realities that challenge the linkages between sustainable development and the marine environment
viii, 157 leaves : maps ; 28 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 146-157).This study examines the social and economic realities of developmental and environmental issues in Chile. It is based on actual research and "hands on" involvement in the coastal areas of Chile where the concentration is on Marine Oil Pollution. Particular emphasis is placed on international environmental policies and their application to the marine environment. Although research was done in Chile, this study could be applied to any marine environment.
This study argues that the environment is essentially linked to development and since environmental problems influence decisions about the progress of many sectors, they are inevitably inseparable. Applied to Agenda 21 of the Earth Summit, 1992, this thesis supports the proposition that the earth's natural resources are pushed to the limit, jeopardizing development potential for the World. This, combined with the notion that improvement in the quality of life for the Chilean people (a codified Constitutional right), emphasizes the need for environmental responsibility to effectively manage the marine sector in that country.
This study advocates ocean management strategies through effective environmental programs, education and policies which will preserve Chile's ecosystems while promoting basic human needs via sound sustainable development principles
Alternative indicators for development : a case study of Atlantic Canada
viii, 204 leaves : ill., maps ; 28 cm.Includes abstract.Maps included in circulating copy only.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 194-199).Existing data for Economic, Social and Environmental indicators are analysed. Costs for these indicators are defined and discussed. Cost estimates are provided for all three sets of indicators. This framework is used to compare present costing and future costs that would occur if the current trends continue to exist. The implications of present cost distribution on economic, social and environmental efficiency, equity and development considerations are explored. Recommendations are provided for reforming current decision making. The integrating theme of the new methods of accounting is the view of "Sustainability;" in contrast to the short-term changes in quantitative growth tracked by the GDP, sustainable development acknowledges the dependence of the human economic subsystem on an encompassing ecosystem and our responsibility to future generations. Economic activity is valued according to long-term qualitative non-market transactions, social equity and environmental considerations. Surveys by Statistics Canada is the primary source of data used for most of the indicators.
Knowledge of environmental, social and economic costs can help many policy and planning decisions. How costs are valued affects not only the economic efficiency and competitiveness but also the equity and the sustainable approach to exploiting the environment in the process of development. Some non-market social, economic and environmental services to the economy as well as to human progress tends to be given little weight or no weight in some policy planning areas and in the present system of national accounts. In recent years techniques have been developed to measure a wide variety of non-market costs. Some of these methods are discussed and used in this study to allow how costs could be compared and to measure human progress
