Digital Games in Gaming History: a Comprehensive Analysis

    No full text
This data-based effort documents and categorizes the relevant digital games in gaming history by analyzing two types of documental sources: (A) the most playable games (based on reports on sales) and (B) the most acclaimed Digital games by the specialized Critic. (A) The approach to ascertain the most played Digital games was thought by the analysis of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) (ESA, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013,2014, 2016, 2018). Regarding (B), six specialized critics' opinions on the most acclaimed digital games were selected for document analysis. From specialized Digital game journalism, the list of best games on the websites Euro Gamer, GamesRadar, IGN, and Polygon. Two Generalist News Media fonts were added: the British newspaper The Guardian and the American news magazine Time. The last source selected was Metacritic, a specialized entertainment evaluation and criticism website. (A) is justified considering that ESA is a nonprofit association with goals to observe, analyze, and unify the gaming industry, helping in terms of justice support by creating expansion opportunities for associates. ESA has several associates such as ElectronicArts, Konami, Microsoft, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Square Enix Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Warner Bros, and other companies with a less economic impact on the digital games business. Since 2008, ESA has published its annual report with data illustrating the industry's state in the corresponding year by reporting data as its total revenue. With the digital games selected in (B), it is possible to construct a broader sample and bridge the gaps in the ESA reports. The sources chosen in (B) are based on geographical representation covering both digital and printed press: Eurogamer is a British digital game journalism website publishing in-depth analyses and criticism of digital games and gaming culture. The top 10 games of the generation is a list published in September 2020 by the editor-in-chief. The author invited 19 persons from the game business: game developers, critics, and journalists. They were asked to submit a list of their five favorite games, any kind or platform. "Games Radar", or "GamesRadar+" in its original denomination brand, is an entertainment website dedicated to digital game-related news, previews, and reviews and is a member of the Independent Press Standards Organisation. In its list of The 100 best games ever, the editorial team (50 specialized journalists) picked the most-critical digital games, privileging fun and enjoyment for the Player before the historical significance of the Digital game. "Polygon" is an American Digital game specialized website that publishes reviews, guides, videos, and news on popular culture and entertainment-related. For their list, the editorial staff asked everyone (including the audience) to vote for the best Digital game based on innovation, polish, and durability rather than personal taste. They excluded games released in 2017 to eliminate recency bias (the year before the list was published). They left out sequels and were too similar to the games before them. In addition to gathering votes from the "Polygon" team, the editorial staff worked with a group of external and freelance writers to pull in their input. Collecting all those votes, they combined the data and the final list. "The Guardian" and "TIME" are generalistic press companies from the United Kingdom and the United States of America, respectively. The Guardian's list reflects the authors' vision. (journalists specializing in digital games) on the best 50 video games of the 21st century. TIME's list reports the tech's team of multiple generations of gamers, resulting in a list of 50 digital games. The last documentary source analyzed, "Metacritic," is a specialized critic website on entertainment (digital games, television, cinema, and music). To evaluate media content, "Metacritic" attributes a "Metascore." Any content featured on "Metacritic" gets a "Metascore" when had collected at least four critics' reviews. It was picked from the website the top 100 meta-scores from Metacritic's top-ranked digital games. In addition, the Digital games were selected by their titles, meaning that repeated games (different platforms) were disregarded. The list culminated in 393 different digital games; on the data based, it is possible to check: the documental sources where the digital games were cited; the year in which digital games were published for the first time; the series or franchise were each gama belongs; the Playability mode of each game; the Spatial Dimensionality; The number of platforms louched; the name of Digital Game Protagonist (if applicable); the name of the main playable Character (if applicable); the taxonomy of the playable Character; the perspective of the playable Character; check if there is a Narrative and the digital game genre

ABSTRACT: This work has for purpose to consider a reflection on the paper of the reader in the configurations of the digital narrative forms. Traditionally the intention of the author, writer, is recognized in the literary compositions, in configuring the universe of history with its characters, shares, scenes, conflicts, remaining itself an unilateral relation between the author, its workmanship and the reader. In the new media, the digital information and the interaction, the reader assumes a new role. The processes of configuration (creation, emission and reception) of the digital narrative forms stimulate a dynamic in the positions of its intervening ones: the author, media/composition and the reader

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

According to the United Nations the world population is aged, and is predicted an aggravation of this situation by 2050. Although there are initiatives and strategic measures that aim to contribute to a general improvement of the situation of e-inclusion, it’s still important to think and develop solutions adapted to the particular needs of senior citizens. The use of Computer-Mediated Communication services, not only allows seniors to communicate with friends, family and establish new relationships, but is also a way to improve these citizens’ quality of life and general welfare. In this investigation were studied strategies of organization and presentation of information within a news aggregator adapted to senior users to be included in the online community under development in SEDUCE project. Subsequently, it was developed a functional prototype that aims to meet the difficulties experienced by this target audience. In order to meet these citizens’ needs, the development of the prototype counted with the involvement of a group of seniors, allowing a user-centered approach and participatory design. The evaluation of the prototype also counted with an external focus group. This service provides continually updated and easily accessible news, which is intended to streamline daily information consumption by this target audience and help in their daily information update

Emphasizing the need to change the scenario of the obesity epidemic currently experienced, especially in relation to children, it is urgent to develop strategies that contribute to the reduction of this reality. This dissertation emerged in order to understand the routines, dietary and physical influences of children between the ages of 6 and 10 and how the games help to change behaviors in order to develop a prototype of a game that allows to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles. Using a methodology based on the proposal by Van den Akker (1999), Design and Development Research, this project begins with the analysis of the object under study (healthy eating in children through digital games) and its theoretical construction, with the prototyping of a videogame that promotes the change of eating and physical behaviors, and then the evaluation and respective improvement of this prototype. The results obtained in the different sessions conducted with the target groups in this exploratory research (focus group and interviews), emerged as products that produced new results, thus promoting a sequential and iterative process of prototype development. The development of this project aims to raise awareness of the importance of adopting healthy habits for the prevention and rectification of problems inherent to nutritional imbalance. As such, it is expected that the prototype developed in this project will boost the adoption of healthy lifestyles in children, in a fun and engaging way

The present thesis has the main aim to explore new paradigms for Serious Games in tangible interfaces, in order to promote non-formal scientific learning among children from ages 5 to 12 years old. It is composed of both a theoretical and also practical model, where a game is developed through a participatory design methodology, then evaluated with the use of an observational method. It is also suggested an intervention in renovating the design of the interactive multimedia installation IMP.cubed, a project of the University of Aveiro in partnership with Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. In this context, this work covers a wide range of knowledge areas, that includes: a) learning theories that help to portray the target audience, b) game and Serious Games theories, which support the development of the game; c ) the design of game and multimedia installations which allows its execution. A preliminary assessment of participatory design sessions revealed that children feel pretty much involved in a project of this kind. Moreover, it is easier to meet their expectations knowing them in advance. The final evaluation of the prototype has highlighted weaknesses in the technology used, but high potential for motivation in non-formal scientific learning and other areas that might be supplementary in these types of installations

Information and communication technologies have increasingly been part of people’s daily lives, aiming at facilitating the usage of services by people of different age cohorts. These services can be of health, safety and social participation, which are the pillars of active ageing, as suggested by the World Health Organization (2002). Some senior citizens take advantage of the use of technologies and research on the subject has been growing, but there are still few studies around the use of digital games, especially those that use geolocation integrated in the game mechanics. In this context, this research centered on the question “How do Location Based Mobile Games (LBMG), namely Pokémon Go (PoGo), contribute to the Active Aging (AA) of players over 50 years old?”. In order to respond to this challenge, this research was structured in three phases. In the first phase, a qualitative research was carried out, aiming to study the profile of the players. An interpretive and inductive method was used, through a document analysis and a systematic literature review that showed at an international level There are few studies regarding the theme or covering solely LBMG or AA. In the second phase, a quantitative method research was carried out, aiming to characterize the ecosystem of PoGo players. This phase used a survey method conducted in Portugal, between August and October 2020, to collect more information about the players' habits and their main perceptions in relation to the potential of the LBMG and AA. The analysis of the results point to the fact that the players’ experiences and their level of immersion when interacting with games in this category present actions sustained in the bases of active aging – namely health, participation, security, education, socialization and well-being (moderate correlation, 20% < r < 50%, with a significance rate of 5%). In the third phase, a qualitative research was carried out, with the objective of observing the subjects regarding the use of LBMG, through a participant field research. Data collection techniques through field observation, participant field diaries, semi-structured interviews and netnography study, supported by analysis and observation grids, with PoGo players over 50 years of age, residing in the city of Porto, allowed us to obtain data subjects and also for a triangulation with a systematic review of the literature and surveys. These data collections took place, both during the moments of interaction of the target audience with the games, and on social networks (since there is no communication channel in the game itself), between the months of August and November 2020. Data in this last phase of the research clarified doubts still open in the documentary and inquiry phases and, through a mixed methodology of data analysis, qualitative and quantitative, they sought to clarify that these types of games in fact enhance active aging, in the case of PoGo, through raids (missions) and events, mainly stimulating social interaction, learning, participation, physical activities and well-being. Given what was studied, it was possible to conclude that the AA elements are enhanced, mainly by the relations of the aspects of the Flow theory, described by Csikszentmihalyi (2002), as a sensation of distortion of time, expertise, attention and others, by the most diverse mechanics of the LBMG, especially for aspects based on location, which establish strong relationships between individuals and the environment in which they work, promoting the maintenance of motivations for active and dignified aging. It is also noteworthy that this thesis presents a set of recommendations for good practices and healthy habits for the senior population, technical notes for game developers, especially addressing older adult players, and scientific-methodological aspects for the community of researchers studying this topic.

This thesis aims to identify and to characterize the modes of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) used in Online Communities (OC), that are relevant to the visual creation practice, contextualizing them in the production of Type Design (TD). And to conceptualize a model of a community of practice, developed under a participatory design methodology, evaluating strategies for its dynamization and development in the national context. Currently, with the widespread of information and communication technologies, the practice of TD, an isolated and individual activity, is subjected to a paradigm shift—to become an activity of increased sharing. The methodology was divided into three phases. Initially we seek to understand the relevant modes of CMC to the practice of TD. In order to do so, we observe the motivations and behaviors of the users on these platforms, backed by the collection of data on the use of these platforms in academic context. Along with the development and evaluation of a preliminary experiment in an existing online platform. In a second phase, we present the conceptual model of an OC to the production of TD supported in the identification and characterization of the existing Virtual Communities of Practice. And on the development and implementation of a functional prototype. This prototype was evaluated in a third phase, using the participation of a sample of professional Portuguese Type Designers in the development of community strategies, according to a participatory Community-Centered Development approach. The use of a small sized Focus Group, and the time limitations of the empirical research does not allow to generalize the results. However, the results reveal that the more specific the shared activity of the practice in the OC, the more specialized and the more restricted the CMC modes that should be implemented for the communication and interaction of the online members. The integration of modes of CMC on asynchronous communication through visual artifacts has the potential for a more effective and satisfying communication for these users. And related to the barriers to participation, although they can be minimized through the implementation of innovative modes, they are a challenge that must be managed, balancing explicit communication, uses, perceptions and expectations of the different roles of the community members

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
