Towards trusted data on decentralized IoT applications: Integrating blockchain in constrained devices

    No full text
Blockchain technology is attracting the interest of the Internet of Things (IoT) domain as a decentralized platform for a trusted record of information. Thus, an increasing number of architectures have been proposed for integrating both technologies. However, few of them have focused on the sensing elements of the IoT systems, which are typically low-cost and resource-constrained devices. In this work, we propose an architecture that integrates blockchain at the sensor level, creating a chain of trust from the source of the data. To evaluate our proposal, we develop a cross-platform library for constrained IoT devices and deploy a full-fledged utilities management showcase using off-the-shelf hardware. From a device perspective, we measure the overhead that our architecture introduces in the system, in terms of memory and program space footprint, processing time, and power consumption. From the application perspective, we quantify the additional cost and delay incurred by using a public blockchain. Our results show that even constrained 8-bit devices with a 16-MHz AVR CPU can support the proposed solution. Moreover, the cost of maintaining a transparent record of daily resource consumption on the blockchain can be less than 1 USD a month

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

La diagnostica per immagini nello studio degli angiomi iperplasici cutanei

Introduction The hyperplasic hemangioma is a immature vases ball. The diagnosis asks for the study of the anatomical elements (mass, location, confinements) with the echography US and dynamic elements (vascular shanks and FAV fistula artery-venous) with the termography (TC termography to contact, TTD teletermography) and the ecography (ECD echo-color-Doppler, PD power-Doppler). Purpose they have been correlated the different techniques to individualize that in the diagnostic one of routine can define the clinical gravity and the evolution of the hemangioma. Materials and Methods have been included in the study, 52 males and 98 females, of 1-60 months with emangioma. The finds have been correlated TC, TTD, ECD and PD recorded at the beginning and at the end of therapeutic wait. Results The peduncles and the FAVs resulted were respectively present - to the beginning of the therapeutic wait to the PD in 142 and 107 cases, to the ECD in 135 and 102 cases, to the TTD in 134 and 101 cases, to the TC in 128 and 93 cases - at the end of wait to the PD in 25 and 21 cases, to the ECD and the TTD in 20 and 18 cases, to the TC in 15 and 13 cases. The correlations underline: p = 0,9929 between PD and TC, p = 0,9982 between PD eTTD, p = 0,9999 between ECD and TTD. Discussion the growth or the regression depend on the capacity of the vascular plot. The progression or the reduction of the lesion is underlined by the increase or by the diminution of the mass and of the number of the peduncles and of the FAVs. The results underline a decreasing sensibility of the investigations PD (100% of the cases), ECD (93,2203% of the cases), TTD (92,5423% of the cases) and TC (84,4067% of the cases). Conclusions The intensity of the vascular flow (number of fistulas and peduncles) allows to distinguish the natural history of the hemangioma in 5 evolutionary phases. Considering the correlations of Spearman the ECD can be the only necessary and enough investigation to the evaluation of the natural history of the cutaneous hemangioma of the infancy

Mono ADP-ribosylation inhibitors prevent inflammatory cytokine release in alveolar epithelial cells.

A549, a type II alveolar epithelial cell line stimulated with LPS (10 mug/ml), released high levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8. Here, we have investigated whether ADP-ribosylation inhibitors block the LPS-triggered cytokine release in epithelial cells. When coincubating A549 with LPS and meta-iodobenzylguanidine or novobiocin, selective arginine-dependent ART-inhibitors, the release of IL-6 and IL-8 was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. This effect has been linked with the presence of a functionally active arginine ADP-ribosylating enzyme on the cell surface. To this aim, we amplified by RT-PCR the ART1 transcript and identified four ADP-ribosylated proteins likely substrate for ART1. The mechanism behind the cytokine inhibition in epithelial cells seems to be correlated with the presence of ART1, which behaves as an essential positive regulator of inflammatory cytokines. This novel observation indicates this enzyme as well as other novobiocin/MIBG sensitive ARTs as potential targets for the development of new therapeutic strategie

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
