Description of Macrobiotus kathyae sp. nov. (Parachela: Macrobiotidae) and first records of tardigrades from Indiana (USA)

    No full text
The integrative description of the new species Macrobiotus kathyae sp. nov. is reported in this study along with the first tardigrade records for Indiana (United States of America). The new species is characterized by having spines in the distal part of the processes ornamenting the free laid eggs. This modified Macrobiotus-type of ornamentations was previously reported also in Macrobiotus annewintersae Vecchi & Stec, 2021 with which the new species forms a monophyletic clade. In seven out of the nine examined samples, eight tardigrade taxa were found including the new species, the first record outside the type locality of Macrobiotus basiatus Nelson et al., 2020, and the northernmost location for the genus Barbaria

Secrets of soccer: Neural network flows and game performance

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, with currently over three billion fans. There are various reasons for this success, but a unique feature of soccer stands out: every match has a high level of unpredictability. For instance, it is not uncommon for a less skilled team to sometimes defeat a better team. Moreover, a match that is apparently decided in favor of a team can suddenly change course, even with few minutes left, ending with a completely opposite result. These highly dramatic effects have brought popularity to this sport, making every match a complex event where the outcome is far from granted. This same complexity has however challenged all attempts of data analysis: the “secrets of soccer”, that is to say the recipes for success, are still an unknown realm, defying all common statistical approaches. In this study we try to shed some light on these secrets by introducing a novel approach that uses neural network flows. We transform a team play into a corresponding brain-like structure, an abstraction that we analyze using measures of efficiency, assessing the “quality of thinking” of the brain. This way, we can view any soccer match as an alternate battle of minds and explore how far this parallelism can help to solve some fundamental open problems, like finding an effective recipe for success, and establishing the best field control strategies

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

On 1494 died the poet Matteo Maria Boiardo, earl of Scandiano and knight at the court of the duke Ercole d'Este. He made testamentary disposition to be burried in a monument inside the parish church of Scandiano. His body was therefore placed provisionaly in the family graves, and his willings where never fulfilled. The memory of this tomb was lost antil recent years, whwn a portion of a side crypt was met during the works carried out for building works. In the present paper the result of the explorations of the graves and the exumation of the poet body found there are described
