The effect of song maps created by using graphs, symbols and images on the success of teaching
In recent years, various teaching strategies based on creativity and effective learning have been developed within the scope of the Turkish Elementary Education Programs. These strategies are reinforced with visual materials to establish an active learning environment. In doing so, the aim is to ensure active participation of students in courses by means of using concept and mind maps in different fields of education. Visual materials are known to play an important role in achieving more effective teaching by means of materializing knowledge, increasing memorability and making courses attractive for the students. It is believed that visual materials must be used to symbolize while teaching the fourth grade students knowledge, and even songs, taking account of their cognitive development. This study aims to find out to what extent the song maps developed by the author are affective in teaching students school songs and to determine the practicability of these maps for teachers and students as a another song teaching approach. In line with this purpose, we performed an experiment throughout a period of 6 weeks with experimental (N=25) and control groups (N=23) comprising of fourth grade students from an elementary school in the Niltifer District of Bursa in the school year 2015/16. 6 songs were chosen in line with the Fourth Grade Music Course Curriculum and these songs were mapped by the author. Before and after the experiment, the scale for measuring the success of learning school songs prepared by the author was used in the pre-test and post-test. Besides, another scale measuring students' opinions on song maps was prepared by the author and administered on the students in the experimental group in the final course to determine their opinions. A Mixed ANOVA was carried out for data analysis using the SPSS 23 package program. The findings of the study showed that the success levels of the experimental group in learning the songs were higher than those of the control group. Moreover, song maps were found to increase memorability and to have positive impact on the students
Music Teacher Education in Turkey and in the USA: Musical Aptitude and Attitude toward Teaching
abstract: An investigation of musical aptitude and attitudes toward teaching among pre-service music teachers in Turkey (n = 42) and the United States (n = 35). Multivariate analysis revealed statistically significant differences by nationality in favor of the Turkish subjects on the tonal, rhythm, and total tests on the Advanced Measures of Music Audiation (AMMA) by Edwin Gordon. There were no significant differences by sex or for the interaction of nationality and sex. There were negative correlations between AMMA scores and scores on the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory, which means that subjects with high music aptitude scores tended to hold attitudes that do not predict effective teaching behaviors. There were also significant differences by nationality on a questionnaire about attitudes toward various music instructional activities in schools.Paper presented in Oslo in November 2000

Oncogenic G12D mutation alters local conformations and dynamics of K-Ras
AbstractK-Ras is the most frequently mutated oncoprotein in human cancers, and G12D is its most prevalent mutation. To understand how G12D mutation impacts K-Ras function, we need to understand how it alters the regulation of its dynamics. Here, we present local changes in K-Ras structure, conformation and dynamics upon G12D mutation, from long-timescale Molecular Dynamics simulations of active (GTP-bound) and inactive (GDP-bound) forms of wild-type and mutant K-Ras, with an integrated investigation of atomistic-level changes, local conformational shifts and correlated residue motions. Our results reveal that the local changes in K-Ras are specific to bound nucleotide (GTP or GDP), and we provide a structural basis for this. Specifically, we show that G12D mutation causes a shift in the population of local conformational states of K-Ras, especially in Switch-II (SII) and α3-helix regions, in favor of a conformation that is associated with a catalytically impaired state through structural changes; it also causes SII motions to anti-correlate with other regions. This detailed picture of G12D mutation effects on the local dynamic characteristics of both active and inactive protein helps enhance our understanding of local K-Ras dynamics, and can inform studies on the development of direct inhibitors towards the treatment of K-RasG12D-driven cancers.</jats:p
Antiviral activity of an N-allyl acridone against dengue virus
Dengue virus (DENV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, is at present the most widespread causative agent of a human viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Despite the increasing incidence of this pathogen, there are no antiviral drugs or vaccines currently available for treatment or prevention. In a previous screening assay, we identified a group of N-allyl acridones as effective virus inhibitors. Here, the antiviral activity and mode of action targeted to viral RNA replication of one of the most active DENV-2 inhibitors was further characterized.Results: The compound 10-allyl-7-chloro-9(10H)-acridone, designated 3b, was active to inhibit the in vitro infection of Vero cells with the four DENV serotypes, with effective concentration 50% (EC50) values in the range 12.5-27.1 μM, as determined by virus yield inhibition assays. The compound was also effective in human HeLa cells. No cytotoxicity was detected at 3b concentrations up to 1000 μM. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that virus entry into the host cell was not affected, whereas viral RNA synthesis was strongly inhibited, as quantified by real time RT-PCR. The addition of exogenous guanosine together with 3b rescued only partially the infectivity of DENV-2.Conclusions: The acridone derivative 3b selectively inhibits the infection of Vero cells with the four DENV serotypes without a direct interaction with the host cell or the virion but interfering specifically with the intracellular virus multiplication. The mode of antiviral action for this acridone apparently involves the cellular enzyme inosine-monophospahe dehydrogenase together with another still unidentified target related to DENV RNA synthesis.Fil: Mazzucco, María Belén. Public health workforce survey data (2016–2021) related to employee turnover: proposed methods for harmonization and triangulation
Introduction: Public health workforce numbers are unsustainable at best and dire at worst: based on 2017 and 2019 data, 80,000 FTEs needed to be hired by health departments to provide basic public health foundational services before COVID-19 hit, suggesting that the situation is worse after the mass exodus of public health officials due to the pandemic. As such, a better understanding of public health workforce turnover is critical to improving recruitment and retention in the discipline.
Methods: This methods report details how the authors harmonized four public health workforce surveys—the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS), the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Profile, the NACCHO Forces of Change survey, and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) Profile—in order to examine employee turnover.
Results: We found that 31% of the public health workforce reported considering leaving their positions at some time in the future. Furthermore, the majority of agencies reported that zero vacancies had been filled in both 2018 and 2019.
Discussion: These findings suggest that retention, recruitment, and onboarding may be areas upon which to focus evaluation and quality improvement endeavors, allowing public health organizations to better attract and retain the most qualified candidates.The author(s) declare financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. An Analysis of Two Turkish EFL Books in Terms of Cultural Aspects
AbstractThis study aims to investigate how culture is employed in English language textbooks, which are used for 3rd and 4th grade students in state schools in Turkey. The study explores the cultural content and the usage frequency of elements related to native culture, target culture and international culture in the series of textbooks. In order to analyse the series of textbooks, descriptive content analysis is used. Quantitative data are gathered through Checklist and Item Frequency Analysis. The results of the study indicate that 3rd grade textbook has more cultural items than 4th grade textbook does in total. The findings also point out that there is an unbalance among culture related items, which means native culture items are less than target and intercultural items in both 3rd and 4th grade textbooks. Consequently, this study also makes suggestions about how cultural load may be presented in those textbooks by indicating a need for rich cultural content
Emergent Narrative, Past, Present and Future of an Interactive Storytelling Approach
The book is concerned with narrative in digital media that changes according to user input—Interactive Digital Narrative (IDN). It provides a broad overview of current issues and future directions in this multi-disciplinary field that includes humanities-based and computational perspectives. It assembles the voices of leading researchers and practitioners like Janet Murray, Marie-Laure Ryan, Scott Rettberg and Martin Rieser. In three sections, it covers history, theoretical perspectives and varieties of practice including narrative game design, with a special focus on changes in the power relationship between audience and author enabled by interactivity. After discussing the historical development of diverse forms, the book presents theoretical standpoints including a semiotic perspective, a proposal for a specific theoretical framework and an inquiry into the role of artificial intelligence. Finally, it analyses varieties of current practice from digital poetry to location-based applications, artistic experiments and expanded remakes of older narrative game titles
Narrative Intelligibility and Closure in Interactive Systems
In this article we define various aspects, or parameters, of interactive narrative systems and present them as a framework that can help authors, creators and designers to conceive, analyze, or prioritize the narrative goals of a given system. We start by defining the Author-Audience distance (AAD), which in turn can be seen as a function of Narrative Intelligibility. AAD can also be influenced by the intended or unintended level of abstractedness or didascalicity (i.e. figurativeness) of a given narrative. We define narrative intelligibility in complementarity with the related notion of Narrative Closure. We also make a distinction between the goals of the system and the goals of the narrative that it mediates, and consider the proposed parameters at two interrelated levels of analysis: the system level and the embedded narrative level, as the normative values and goals of these two levels should not be taken for granted
