    Three dimensional frequency-domain solution method for unsteady turbomachinery flows

    The three-dimensional calculation of unsteady flows is increasingly gaining importance in the prediction of turbomachinery flow problems. A three-dimensional Euler/Navier-Stokes solver incorporating the time-linearized method and the nonlinear harmonic method in the frequency domain has been developed for predicting unsteady turbomachinery flows. In the time-linearized method, the flow is decomposed into a steady part and a harmonic perturbation part. Linearization results in a steady flow equation and a time-linearized perturbation equation. A pseudo-time time-marching technique is introduced to time-march them. A cell centred finite volume scheme is employed for spatial discretization and the time integration involves a four stage Runge Kutta scheme. Nonreflecting boundary conditions are applied for far field boundaries and a slip wall boundary condition is used for Navier-Stokes calculations. In the nonlinear harmonic method, the flow is assumed to be composed of a time-averaged part and an unsteady perturbation part. Due to the nonlinearity of the unsteady equations, time-averaging produces extra unsteady stress terms in the time-averaged equation which are evaluated from unsteady perturbations. While the unsteady perturbations are obtained from solving the harmonic perturbation equation, the coefficients of perturbation equations come from the solution of time-averaged equation and this interaction is achieved through a strong coupling procedure. In order to handle flows with strong nonlinearity, a cross coupling of higher order harmonics through a harmonic balancing technique is also employed. The numerical solution method is similar to that used in the time-linearized method. The numerical validation includes several test cases involving linear and nonlinear unsteady flows with specific attention to flows around oscillating blades. The results have been compared with other well developed linear methods, nonlinear time-marching method and experimental data. The nonlinear harmonic method is able to predict strong nonlinearities associated with shock oscillations well but some limitations have also been observed. A three-dimensional prediction of unsteady viscous flows through a linear compressor cascade with 3D blade oscillation, probably the first of its kind, has shown that unsteady flow calculation in the frequency domain is able to predict three-dimensional blade oscillations reasonably well

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Computation of Aerodynamic Damping for Flutter Analysis of a Transonic Fan

    This paper describes the computational analysis of aerodynamic damping for prediction of flutter characteristics of a transonic fan stage that consists of a highly loaded rotor along with a tandem stator. Three dimensional, linearized Navier-Stokes flow solver TRACE is used to numerically analyse the flutter stability of the fan. The linear flow solver enables the modeling of a single blade passage to simulate the desired inter-blade phase angle. The unsteady aerodynamic load on a vibrating blade is obtained by solving the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations on a dynamically deforming grid and the energy exchange method is used to calculate the aerodynamic damping. The calculation of aerodynamic damping for the prediction of flutter characteristics of the fan rotor is carried out with and without considering the influence of the disk. The blade mode shapes from finite element modal analysis are obtained accordingly and the flutter calculations are carried out for three blade vibration modes at the design speed and at part speeds for all possible inter-blade phase angles. Two operating points, one on the working line and the other near stall are investigated at every rotational speed. Different aspects that affect the aerodynamic damping behaviour like part speed operation, variation in unsteady blade surface pressure fluctuation between operating points on the working line and at near stall and the corresponding variation in aerodynamic work, inter-blade phase angle etc., are described. This analysis primarily focuses on the variations in aerodynamic damping of the fan with and without the influence of the disk. In addition, influence and effect of shock wave on the aerodynamic damping is also discussed

    Aeroelastic analysis of a contra-rotating fan for a high bypass ratio engine

    Engine design for modern civil transport aircraft is required to achieve noise reduction coupled with high fuel efficiency. The use of contra-rotating fan in high bypass ratio turbofan engines is aimed at providing significant improvement in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and noise levels in addition to the increase in propulsive efficiency and wider stall-free operation. In the present work, the flutter characteristics of a contrarotating fan blisk for a high bypass ratio engine have been computationally investigated. Unsteady time domain simulations have been performed for each blisk separately for two different operating speeds to get the flutter predictions. The predicted aerodynamic damping for different interblade phase angles shows that the fan configuration is stable for the speeds investigated. The presence of shock does not have an adverse effect on the unsteady surface pressure. It is the phase rather than the amplitude of the first harmonic unsteady surface pressure that influences the damping behaviour

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
