    Novel Biodegradable Zn-Base Alloys for Biomedical Applications

    Zn-base alloys have been recognized as promising biodegradable materials for structural biomedical applications thanks to their good biocompatibility and lower corrosion rate compared to Mg alloys. However, pure Zn has poor mechanical properties, and several strategies are adopted in order to improve them. In this study, novel biodegradable Zn-base alloys, for biodegradable stent applications, have been designed by adding different amount of non-toxic elements (Ag and Mn). The alloys were hot extruded at 250 °C and subsequently annealed at 410 °C for 6 h. The effect of alloying elements and heat treatment are discussed in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties

    Plasma Spraying of W Coatings for Nuclear Fusion Applications: Advancements and Challenges

    The selection of a suitable plasma-facing material (PFM) that must protect the divertor, cooling systems, and structural components is an important challenge in the design of advanced fusion reactors and requires careful consideration. Material degradation due to melting and evaporation may lead to plasma contamination, which must be strictly avoided. Among the candidate materials, tungsten (W) is the most promising because of its thermo-mechanical and physical properties, which allow it to endure repeated exposure to extremely harsh conditions within the reactor. The plasma spraying (PS) technique is gaining increasing interest for the deposition of tungsten (W) coatings to protect heat sink materials, due to its relatively low cost, high deposition rates, and capability to coat complex-shaped surfaces and fix damaged coatings in situ. This review aims to provide a systematic assessment of tungsten (W) coatings produced by PS techniques, evaluating their suitability as PFMs. It discusses W-based materials, plasma spraying technologies, the role of the interface in joining W coating and metallic substrates such as copper alloys and steels, and the main issues related to coating surface erosion under steady-state and transient heat loads associated with advanced fusion reactor operation modes and off-normal events. Quantitative data available in the literature, such as porosity, oxygen content, thermal conductivity of the coatings, residual stresses accumulated in the coating–substrate interface, surface temperature, and material loss following heat load events, were summarized and compared to bulk W ones. The results demonstrate that, following optimization of the fabrication process, PS-W coatings exhibit excellent performance. In addition, previously mentioned advantages of PS technology make PS-W coatings an attractive alternative for PFM fabrication

    Nanoscale and Tensile-Like Properties by an Instrumented Indentation Test on PBF-LB SS 316L Steel

    The mechanical properties of a defect-free laser melting (PBF-LB) deposit of an AISI 316L steel alloy were assessed by means of an instrumented indentation test (IIT), at both the macro- and nano-scales. The inherent non-equilibrium microstructure of the alloy was chemically homogenous and consisted of equiaxed grains and large-elongated grains (under the optical microscope) with irregular outlines composed of a much finer internal cell structure (under the scanning electron microscope). Berkovich and Vickers indenters were used to assess the indentation properties across individual grains (nano) and over multiple grains (macro), respectively. The nano-indentation over the X-Y plane revealed nearly constant indentation modulus across an individual grain but variable on average within different grains whose value depended on the relative orientation of the individual grain. The macro-indentation test was conducted to analyze the tensile-like properties of the polycrystalline SS 316L alloy over the X-Y and Y-Z planes. The macro-indentation test provided a reliable estimate of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS-like) of the alloy. Other indentation properties gave inconsistent results, and a post factum analysis was, therefore, conducted, by means of a new approach, to account for the presence of residual stresses. The already existing indentation data were supplemented with new repeated indentation tests to conduct a detailed analysis of the relaxation ability of compressive and tensile residual stresses. The developed methodology allows the effect of residual stresses and the reliability of measured macro-indentation properties to be examined as a function of a small group of indentation parameters

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
