Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning Using Polynomial Transformations for Structured Prediction
No full textMany learning problems in computer vision can be posed as structured prediction problems, where the input and output instances are structured objects such as trees, graphs or strings rather than, single labels {+1, −1} or scalars. Kernel methods such as Structured Support Vector Machines , Twin Gaussian Processes (TGP), Structured Gaussian Processes, and vector-valued Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), offer powerful ways to perform learning and inference over these domains. Positive definite kernel functions allow us to quantitatively capture similarity between a pair of instances over these arbitrary domains. A poor choice of the kernel function, which decides the RKHS feature space, often results in poor performance. Automatic kernel selection methods have been developed, but have focused only on kernels on the input domain (i.e.’one-way’). In this work, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm for learning kernel functions simultaneously, on both input and output domains. We introduce the idea of learning polynomial kernel transformations, and call this method Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning (STKL). STKL can learn arbitrary, but continuous kernel functions, including ’one-way’ kernel learning as a special case. We formulate this problem for learning covariances kernels of Twin Gaussian Processes. Our experimental evaluation using learned kernels on synthetic and several real-world datasets demonstrate consistent improvement in performance of TGP’s.Peer reviewe
The study of open source CMSs
No full textIn this thesis, we evaluate different Open Source Content Management Systems (CMSs) and determine their appropriateness for scientific research laboratories' website content management. We describe different CMSs and evaluate them based on the following criteria: ease of installation, usability, maintenance and updates, scalability, community strength and support, user roles and workflow, security, and Web 2.0 features. We then choose one of these systems, Drupal, and demonstrate its effectiveness for two different scientific websites, Bio-1 and Vizlab. Drupal allows integrating new features using community contributed modules and easy future up-gradation. Identity Politics of the Left and Right: An Interview with Chetan Bhatt
No full textChetan Bhatt is the Anthony Giddens Professor of Social Theory in the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics. Chetan’s research has looked at the global rise of religious fundamentalism, the international authoritarian far right, and the power of nationalism and racism historically and in contemporary political movements. Some of this work is discussed in his TED talk: Dare to refuse the origin myths that claim who you are. His most recent book is entitled The Revolutionary Road To Me (2025). This book looks at the way the rise of identity politics, and its underlying form of ‘identitarianism’, has paralysed the Western political Left. He argues that identity politics has divided progressive and Leftist political parties in a highly damaging way, leaving organisations and campaigning groups mired in intractable conflicts. Most importantly, the predominance of identity politics has diverted the Left from its founding political mission – addressing the human misery caused by the vast increases in poverty, inequality and violence across the world, driven as this is by capitalism’s relentless drive for accumulation. He also discusses the way contemporary corporate capitalism has adopted the language of identity politics, transforming what were once genuine demands for addressing discrimination into a corporate branding exercise. The form of identity politics on the Left, in so degrading the capacities of the Left to address people’s real concerns, has created a golden opportunity for Right to respond with their own forms of identity politics based on racist nationalism and misogyny, which is paraded before the populace as though it is they who now represent the interests of ‘ordinary people’ against ‘cultural elites’
System integration and image pre-processing for an automated, real-time identification and monitoring system for coral reef fish
No full textIn this work we build an underwater vision system capable of monitoring the activities of fish found near coral reefs. We propose a unique hardware platform capable of monitoring a volume of water in a very efficient and cost effective way. We also develop algorithms required to take advantage of such a system. There are three main contributions of this work, which are; (1) using two right-angled camera’s to capture underwater image sequences, (2) developing algorithms to track and pre-process images for recognition (3) and demonstrating that we can recognize fish families or in some cases exact fish species using fish shape(with size, color and pattern features to be added later). We conclude from this work that using just two cameras in a right-angled setup is a cheap and effective way of monitoring fish activities in general. It is cost effective when compared to using multiple cameras and also less computationally intensive. We developed and modified our approach based on observations we made while testing this setup and accommodated these modifications in our software. We installed this system at the artificial coral reef in the New York Aquarium and periodically collected image sequences for processing. We demonstrate our results on the collected sequences and show pre-processing results on them. We also demonstrate, using shape feature from a fish sequence we collected at the aquarium (using cross-validation); that we can recognize fish families or in some cases exact species using those features.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Chetan Tond
Improving Bicycle Safety through Automated Real-Time Vehicle Detection
No full textThe manner in which people use bicycles has changed very little since their invention in 1817. In that time, though, roadways have become congested with a dramatically less environmentally friendly mode of transportation: automobiles. These vehicles and the motorists who drive them represent, at times, a serious threat to the safety of both road cycling enthusiasts and bicycle commuters alike. Since bikers typically ride with the ow of trac, the most dangerous situation for them is when they are being passed by a motorist from behind. As a result, a biker must spend a substantial amount of her cognitive and physical ability to periodically scan for rear-approaching vehicles, reducing her capacity to handle the bicycle safely and maintain continual awareness for both the forward and rearward situations.To improve road cycling safety, we present a system that augments a standard bicycle with audio and video sensing, and computational capabilities. This Cyber-Physical bicycle system continuously senses the environment behind a biker, processes the sensed data utilizing audio processing and computer vision techniques, automatically detects the occurrences of rear-approaching vehicles, and alerts the biker in real time prior to the encounter. In this paper we present (i) the design of our prototype Cyber-Physical bicycle system and (ii) the results of our evaluation using video and audio traces collected from bikers. These results demonstrate both the feasibility of the system, exhibiting a high degree of detection accuracy while operating under the real-time and energy constraints of the problem scenario.Technical report DCS-TR-66

Chetan Bhagat’s novels are emblems of the true thoughts of contemporary young India. 2 States: The Story of My Marriage is a love story of Krish, a Punjabi boy and Ananya, a Tamilian girl, and their attempts to convert their love into marriage with the endorsement of their parents. Author humorously delineates cultural aspects of Tamil Brahmin and Punjabi communities which are in sharp contrast to each other. The paper helps us to understand the cultural and social barriers between North-India and South-India and their impact on inter-caste marriages

No full textInternational audienceIn the first decade of the 21st century, in the course of a few years, a handful of engineering graduates from the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, published debut novels, all of which were about being students, boys and girls in the school. The author who initiated the genre I call "engineering novel" is Chetan Bhagat. Through his commercial success and the reputation he has acquired, this singular author has become a positive model of identification for many students, or a negative model of rejection for writers who define themselves by their literary vocation. In this article, I question the ways in which becoming a writer is a part of being an engineer, a tipping point where these people are confronted with a dual professional identity. What relationship do these new writers have with writing and the idea of a literary project? In conclusion, I show that the development of new digital publishing technologies blurs, in the case of contemporary India, a distinction that can be dated and situated between artistic vocation and commercial success.Dans la première décennie du XXIe siècle, en l’espace de quelques années,une poignée d’ingénieurs diplômés de l’école d’élite, l’Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)de Delhi, publient des premiers romans qui portent tous sur la condition d’étudiants,garçons et filles, dans cette école. L’auteur qui a initié le genre que je nomme « romand’ingénieur » est Chetan Bhagat. Par son succès commercial et la réputation qu’il a acquise, cet auteur singulier est devenu un modèle positif d’identification pour nombre d’étudiants, ou un modèle négatif de rejet pour des écrivains qui se définissent par leur vocation littéraire. Dans cet article, j’interroge les manières de devenir écrivain lorsqu’on est ingénieur, ce moment de basculement ou ces personnes sont confrontées à une double identité professionnelle. Quelles relations ces nouveaux écrivains entretiennent-ils avec l’écriture et l’idée de projet littéraire ? Each tape starts with a song in which Karadi introduces himself as a teller of stories. Here Kapi, the good king of the monkeys, has warned them not to let any mangoes float downriver towards Benares. Korung, a bad monkey, lets one float down, and soon enough the king has sent boats upriver to find this wonderful fruit. When the king and his hunters arrive, Kapi understands that he must form part of a bridge to freedom for his threatened people. He does this, and the king in admiration stops his men from firing arrows at Kapi. Korung, the last across, dashes Kapi down, but he revives. When the king assures Kapi that his people can return, he forgives Korung and welcomes him back. The book and audio cassette come together in a cellophane package. The Five-Point Indian: Caste, Masculinity, and English Language in the Paratexts of Chetan Bhagat
No full text This article examines the literary celebrity of Indian author Chetan Bhagat and his paratextual articulations in India’s English-language media. It seeks to deconstruct the role of these paratexts in occluding how upper-caste masculinity operates as the normative script in mainstream media discourse. Critically examining Bhagat’s utterances in English-language television news, print newspapers, and social media, I argue that the paratexts enable his authorial persona to be continually constructed in ways that consolidate his caste-patriarchal authority. In the process, these paratexts valorize neoliberal entrepreneurship and narratives of ascent, rendering existing caste hegemonies in India invisible. Bhagat’s use of English also reflects the complex politics of the English language in colonial history, where upper-caste men in service of the empire utilized the linguistic hegemony of English to consolidate their patriarchal and caste dominance. However, I suggest that pockets of awareness operate among Bhagat’s readers and audiences, where subaltern groups have strategically negotiated using this upper-caste masculinized English to forge their own social mobility and empowerment. Bhagat’s performance of celebrity has to thus be seen as being enacted within a complex English-speaking milieu, which is rife with caste and gender power struggles. </jats:p

Postmodern subjects like youth aspirations, love, sex, marriage, urban middle class sensibilities, and issues related to corruption, politics, education and their impact on the contemporary Indian society are recurrently reflected thematic concerns in his fictions. In all his fictions, he has mostly depicted the contemporary urban social milieu of Indian society. Though the fictions of Chetan Bhagat are romantic in nature, contemporary Indian society and its major issues are the chief of the concerns of all his fictions. He has focused on the contemporary issues of middle class family in his fictional works. All of the chief protagonists of his works are sensitive youth and they do not compromise with the prevalent situations of society. Most of the characters are like caricatures that represent one or the other vice or virtue of the contemporary Indian society. The author has a mastery to convince the reader about the prevalent condition of society so that one can easily reproduce in mind, a clear cut image of contemporary Indian society. The present article is a sincere endeavor to present the detailed literary analysis of the select fictions of Chetan Bhagat keeping in mind how the contemporary Indian society has been replicated in the fictions
