Overall Equipment Effectiveness: consistency of ISO standard with literature
The International Organization for Standardization ISO22400 standard has been published for the purpose of defining a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for manufacturing operations management, and provides two definitions of the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) indicator. Despite OEE formulation has been well established for thirty years now, the ISO22400 standard versions seem to diverge one from the other and from the original Nakajima's TPM formulation. Moreover, the standard appears to be incomplete, and many relationships among the terms and the definitions are imprecise. In this paper the authors report on the analysis of the ISO22400 OEE indicators and propose a classification of equipment states which can grant the standard consistency with the established OEE expression. Hence, the paper provides the reader with all the indispensable piece of information to practically handle this important KPI without ambiguity
KPIs in operations management: Extending the ISO22400 standard scope
Recently, the International Organization for Standardization published the ISO22400 standard, offering a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) for manufacturing operation management. This set is declared to be specifically referred to production execution. However, the standard includes either tactical indicators and operative ones. Moreover, production planning indicators are currently not taken into consideration, neither in ISO22400 not in other standards. Through an extensive literature review, this paper aims at investigating manufacturing operations management indicators and finding possible connections with ISO22400 standard, while identifying eventual needs for integration at tactical level. A framework for operations management KPIs is proposed and used to classify 778 indicators identified among scientific papers, white papers, reports and international standards. This lead to considerations on ISO22400 completeness and coherence; moreover, this classification can represent a reference for future standards formalization
Quantifying the impact of ERP malfunctioning in a manufacturing plant
Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) benefits for manufacturing companies have been praised for years and companies have become increasingly dependent on these IT tools. However, any malfunctions or temporary unavailability of the ERP can significantly affect the company business. The ERP obsolescence invokes the critical decision on whether to update, upgrade or substitute it. When these operations require significant investments, a timely evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages is needed. In this paper, we present a methodology to quantify the economic loss caused by the malfunctioning of an ERP supporting a manufacturing plant. The research took cue from a real case of a world-famous multinational company of the automotive industry. In this case, the maintenance contract supporting the previous system expired and the company experienced significant inconveniences by delaying the introduction of a new ERP. Hence, the main functional features of an ERP in a production plant processes are listed, and the potential hindrances due to the information system malfunctioning are classified in four critical macro-categories: production planning, manufacturing operations management, materials management, warehousing and inventory control. The contribution of the paper resides in classification of the main operational losses due to ERP malfunction in a generic manufacturing site, on top of proposing possible criteria for estimating the related economic losses, based on the issues faced during the real-world scenario
The diffusion of international standards on managerial practices
This article presents a comprehensive framework which identifies the relevant factors that can influence the standard adoption process, along with insights for performing a qualitative perspective analysis on the possible market diffusion of a specific standard under development or under review. This article also shows an example of framework application to the ISO 22400 standard, evidencing organizational and managerial implications on the standard adoption process
Winning strategies for value creation and value capture in the almond industry: a case study approach
Purpose: This study explores the strategies of value creation and value capture adopted by two companies producing and processing almonds to measure their effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach: The study takes a quantitative approach based on the analysis of two cases study. The value created and captured is esteemed by using the “transformation value” of agricultural products, developed by the Italian economic-estimative school. Findings: The research shows how vertical integration, product differentiation and direct sales can increase the value created and captured by companies. The results demonstrate that effective supply chain management allows firms to retain a greater share of the value created, thereby improving their competitiveness. Originality/value: This quantitative approach, scarcely present in the literature, makes a significant contribution to the literature on value creation and capture and proposes a replicable methodology for analyzing the impact of business strategies in the agribusiness sector
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Proposal for a classification of ISO22400 KPIs for manufacturing operations management
The ISO22400 standard defines key performance indicators for manufacturing operation management. Its visionary goal is to be applicable to all industry types, regardless the production methodology and the process configuration. Pursuing this objective, a challenging trade-off between generality and specificity in the definitions must be found. In the cited standard, the former approach has been preferred: thus, several indicators seem too vaguely defined and result to be difficulty usable in real contexts. Our aim is to refine the ISO22400 standard definitions and in this paper, by means of a designed classification method combined with the explicit and implicit existing information, the indicators are analysed according to their specific initial application context. Afterward, context extensions are proposed to overcome the recognised shortcomings and to better support performance measurement. In this step on the road to the improvement of the ISO standard, we managed to refer each indicator to work orders, production orders, work units, to the entire process, and to possible combination of these. This information is crucial to proceed towards a better interpretation of the standard and, thus, its diffusion in the real world
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
