Lithiation and reactions of stilbene oxides: Synthetic utility
The lithiation of trans- and cis-stilbene oxides (+/-)-1 and 8 has been investigated. While with 8, lithiation occurred exclusively at the benzylic position, with the trans isomer (+/-)-1, ortho-lithiation competed with alpha-lithiation depending upon the experimental conditions. The configurational stability of the alpha-lithiated cis- and trans-stilbene oxides (+/-)-2 and (+/-)-9, respectively, was proved as well as that of scalemic stilbene oxide (R,R)-2.</p

How do variations in Urban Heat Islands in space and time influence household water use? The case of Phoenix, Arizona
abstract: This paper explores how urbanization, through its role in the evolution of Urban Heat Island (UHI), affects residential water consumption. Using longitudinal data and drawing on a mesoscale atmospheric model, we examine how variations in surface temperature at the census tract level have affected water use in single family residences in Phoenix, Arizona. Results show that each Fahrenheit rise in nighttime temperature increases water consumption by 1.4%. This temperature effect is found to vary significantly with lot size and pool size. The study provides insights into the links between urban form and water use, through the dynamics of UHI.Corresponding Author:

The combination of synthesis and ultra-high-resolution NMR spectroscopy reveals the correct structure of caylobolide A
olyketide-derived natural products bearing repeat 1,5-polyols are commonly encountered but their structures are notoriously difficult to determine using spectroscopic techniques. The presence of distal 1,5-diol moieties frequently leads to spectral overlap and chemical shift degeneracy, giving rise to ambiguity in their assignment. Caylobolide A is a representative member of this class of natural products, bearing a 36-membered lactone, with six 1,5-diol units and two 1,3-diol units. Its partial structure had been proposed, but only 4 of the 12 stereogenic centres had been assigned. Here we report a blueprint for the structure determination of this class of natural products, comprising the use of ultra-high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, Mosher’s ester analysis and an efficient mixed isomer synthesis to unveil the correct structure of caylobolide A. With this approach, the partial stereochemistry proposed and the position of the triol unit within the carbon chain has been reassigned, culminating in the total synthesis of caylobolide A in 17 steps
Stereospecific Allylic Functionalization:The Reactions of Allylboronate Complexes with Electrophiles
Allylboronic esters react readily with carbonyls and imines (π-electrophiles), but are unreactive toward a range of other electrophiles. By addition of an aryllithium, the corresponding allylboronate complexes display enhanced nucleophilicity, enabling addition to a range of electrophiles (tropylium, benzodithiolylium, activated pyridines, Eschenmoser's salt, Togni's reagent, Selectfluor, diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD), MeSX) in high regio- and stereocontrol. This protocol provides access to key new functionalities, including quaternary stereogenic centers bearing moieties such as fluorine and the trifluoromethyl group. The allylboronate complexes were determined to be 7 to 10 orders of magnitude more reactive than the parent boronic ester.</p
Use of vibration measurements in health monitoring of reinforced concrete buildings
PurposeIn developing countries such as India, it is common practice to use low‐quality building materials, the strength of such materials reduce with time, which affects the lifespan of buildings. The wind, rain, seepage, and surface runoff are other key factors responsible for building damage and exterior degradation. The increasing industrial growth in and around urban areas is responsible for increasing industrial and anthropogenic emissions that are found to accelerate degradation of the buildings that affects their physical appearance. In an area prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, subsidence, floods, lightning, tornados, and cyclone/hurricanes, huge amounts of damage throughout the globe has been experienced. For the purpose of assuring safety due to natural hazards, it is necessary to monitor the damage for its existence, its location and extent. Undetected damage may potentially lead to risk of vulnerability caused by natural hazards and eventually to catastrophic failure. Hence, rapid structural damage detection is essential and important to save human life due to failure of structures or buildings. Most of the time, human loss occurs due to damage to the buildings. This paper aims to address these issues.Design/methodology/approachIn the present study, numerous experiments have been carried out on two reinforced concrete building test specimens and on seven existing reinforced cement concrete structures.FindingsThe results presented here in this study show that the vibration measurements can be used to monitor the health of framed reinforced cement concrete buildings.Originality/valueThe present study is part of doctoral thesis of Varinder S.
