    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Design of a 14-storey reinforced building according to TBDY-2018, considering structure-pile-soil interaction

    Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, İnşaat Mühendisliği Ana Bilim Dalı, Yapı Mühendisliği Bilim DalıKazıklı temeller, taşıma gücünün yetersiz olduğu yumuşak zeminlerde inşa edilecek binalar için yatay ve düşey yüklere karşı bir önlem olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Ülkemizde, Türkiye Bina Deprem Yönetmeliği (TBDY-2018) yürürlüğe girmeden önce kazıklı binaların tasarımı, genel anlamda sadece düşey yükler altında oturmaların sınır değerler altında kalması göz önünde bulundurularak gerçekleştiriliyordu. TBDY-2018 ile birlikte deprem etkileri altında yapı-kazık-zemin etkileşiminin dikkate alınması zorunlu kılınmıştır. Bu tez kapsamında ZE türü yumuşak zemine oturan, taşıyıcı sistemi perde ve çerçevelerden oluşan, iki bodrum, zemin ve 11 kattan oluşan, 14 katlı betonarme bir binanın yapı-kazık-zemin-etkileşimi dikkate alınarak tasarımı gerçekleştirilmiştir. Tez çalışmasında öncelikle yapı-zemin-etkileşimi göz ardı edilerek söz konusu binanın tabanı ankastre olarak modellenmiş ve dayanıma göre tasarımı yapılmıştır. Kesit boyutları ve donatı detayları belirlenen binanın doğrusal olmayan modeli oluşturulduktan sonra seçilen 4 kuvvetli yer hareketinin için 8 zaman tanım alanında doğrusal olmayan analiz (ZTA) gerçekleştirilerek performans değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Performans değerlendirilmesinde, ZTA'lerin her biri için zaman serisi boyunca oluşan mutlak değerce en büyük iç kuvvet, şekildeğiştirme ve yerdeğiştirme büyüklükleri kullanılmıştır. Sonrasında, 8 adet analizden elde edilen büyüklüklerin ortalama, ortalama±standart sapma, en küçük ve en büyük değerleri göz önüne alınarak performans değerlendirilmesi tamamlanmıştır. Değerlendirilen büyüklükler kat kesme kuvvetleri, göreli kat ötelemeleri oranları, kat ötelemeleri, zemin katta yer alan perdelerde oluşan çelik ve sargılı beton şekildeğiştirmeleri ve seçilen bir kolon ile kiriş kesiti için yapı yüksekliği boyunca oluşan plastik dönme değerleri şeklindedir. Ayrıca, ZTA analizlerinden elde edilen ortalama kat yerdeğiştirmeleri, göreli kat öteleme oranları ve kat kesme kuvvetleri mod birleştirme yönteminden elde edilen sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Yapılan karşılaştırmalarda dayanıma göre tasarımdan elde edilen ortalama büyüklüklerin büyük ölçüde şekildeğiştirmeye göre tasarım sonuçları ile tutarlı olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Deprem etkisi altındaki söz konusu binanın yapı-zemin-kazık etkileşimi alt sistem yaklaşımı dikkate alınarak sağlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda TBDY-2018'de belirtilen Yöntem III kullanılmıştır. Öncelikle, üst yapının eylemsizlik özelliğinin dikkate alınmadığı kinematik etkileşim modeli sadece kazıklar, kütlesiz rijit bina temeli ve bodrum kat perdelerinin modellenmesi ile kurulmuştur. Kazık elemanlar ile zemin arasındaki etkileşim p-y, t-z ve Q-z yayları ile; bodrum perdeleri ile zemin arasındaki davranış ise p-y türü yaylar vasıtasıyla dolaylı olarak dikkate alınmıştır. Kazıklarda grup etkisinden kaynaklı kayıplar yaklaşık olarak ampirik bağıntılarla hesaplanmıştır. Zemin özelliği ZB olarak tanımlanan ana kaya için 11 adet deprem kaydı seçilmiş ve kayıtlar TBDY-2018'de tanımlanan elastik ivme spektrumuyla spektral uyuşum sağlanacak şekilde SeismoMatch programıyla modifiye edilmiştir. Zemin katmanları göz önüne alınarak tek boyutlu serbest zemin davranış analizleri DeepSoil programıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu analizlerden bina tabanında her bir kayıt için elastik ivme spektrumları oluşturulmuş ve ortalamaları alınarak eylemsizlik etkileşimine esas olan tasarım spektrumu elde edilmiştir. Ancak davranış analizlerinden hesaplanan spektrum ordinatlarının ZE zemin sınıfı için TBDY-2018'de tanımlı olan spektrumdan küçük değerler vermesi üzerine tasarım spektrumu olarak ZE zemin sınıfına uygun spektrum esas alınmıştır. Serbest zemin titreşim analizlerinden deprem kayıtlarının her biri için kazıklar boyunca oluşan maksimum yerdeğiştirme zarfları elde edilmiş ve bina bu yerdeğiştirme zarfları hedef gözetilerek artımsal statik hesap gerçekleştirilmiştir. Kinematik etkileşime esas olacak kazık iç kuvvetleri on bir deprem analizinin her birinden elde edilen mutlak değerce en büyük değerlerin ortalaması alınarak hesaplanmış ve yapı davranış katsayısı oranında küçültülerek azaltılmış iç kuvvet talepleri elde edilmiştir. Eylemsizlik etkileşimi kapsamında, bodrum katlar ve temel üst yapı ile birlikte kütleleri dikkate alınarak modellenmiş ve temel planının ağırlık merkezinde tanımlı bir düğüm noktasında, iki yatay eksen ve bu eksenler etrafında dönme serbestliği doğrultusu için etkileşim yayları tanımlanmıştır. Eylemsizlik etkileşimi mod birleştirme yöntemine göre gerçekleştirilmiş ve bu etkileşimden kaynaklanan azaltılmış kazık iç kuvvetleri hesaplanmıştır. Kinematik ve eylemsizlik etkileşimlerinden elde edilen kuvvetlerin mutlak değerlerinin toplamı kazıklarda tasarıma esas olan kuvvetler olarak hesaplanmış ve kazık donatıları belirlenmiştir.Piled foundations have emerged as a precaution against horizontal and vertical loads for buildings constructed on soft soils with insufficient bearing capacity. In Turkey, prior to the implementation of the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY-2018), the design of piled buildings was generally based on limiting their settlements under vertical loads. However, TBDY-2018 made it mandatory to consider the interaction between the structure, piles, and soil under earthquake effects. In this thesis, the design of a 14-story reinforced concrete building, founded on a type-ZE soft soil, with a structural system composed of shear walls and frames, 2 basements, ground floor, and 11 above-ground floors, was performed while taking into account the structure-pile-soil interaction. Initially, by neglecting the structure-soil interaction, the building's base was modeled as a fixed support, and its design was conducted based on its resistance. After determining the cross-sectional dimensions and reinforcement details, a nonlinear model of the building was established, and eight time-domain nonlinear analyses (ZTA) were performed considering four selected strong ground motion records to assess the building's performance. The evaluation involved the maximum absolute values of internal forces, displacements, and storey drift ratios over time for each ZTA. Subsequently, by considering the average, average±standard deviation, minimum, and maximum values from the eight analyses, a comprehensive performance assessment was conducted. The evaluated quantities included storey shear forces, relative storey displacements, storey drifts, steel and confined concrete strain in the basement walls, and plastic rotation values along the height of the structure for a selected column and beam section. Additionally, the average storey displacements, relative storey drift ratios, and storey shear forces obtained from ZTA analyses were compared with those obtained using the modal combination method. The results indicated that the average values obtained from the design based on resistance were in good agreement with the design results based on deformation. The structure-soil-pile interaction was considered using the subsystem approach for the building under earthquake effects. In this context, Method III specified in TBDY-2018 was employed. Initially, a kinematic interaction model was developed, considering only the piles, massless rigid foundation, and basement walls. The interaction between pile elements and the soil was considered through p-y, t-z, and Q-z springs, while the behavior between the basement walls and the soil was indirectly taken into account through p-y springs. Losses due to group effects in the piles were approximately calculated using empirical relationships. For the main rock layer characterized as ZB, 11 earthquake records were selected and modified using the SeismoMatch program to match the elastic acceleration spectrum defined in TBDY-2018. One-dimensional free-field soil response analyses were conducted using the DeepSoil program, considering the soil layers. Elastic acceleration spectra were derived at the base of the structure for each record, and their averages were used to obtain the design spectrum based on inertial interaction. However, due to the ZE soil class resulting in small spectrum ordinates from the behavior analyses, the design spectrum compatible with the ZE soil class was adopted. From the free-field vibration analyses, maximum displacement envelopes along the piles were obtained for each earthquake record, and incremental static analysis was performed to achieve the target displacements at the base of the building. For the inertial interaction, masses of the basement floors and foundation were considered in the model, and interaction springs were defined at a designated node at the center of gravity of the foundation plan for two horizontal axes and the rotational degree of freedom about these axes. Inertial interaction was realized according to the modal combination method, and the reduced pile internal forces arising from this interaction were calculated. The sum of the absolute values of the forces obtained from kinematic and inertial interactions was considered as the design forces for the piles, and pile reinforcements were determined
