    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Jatropha cultivation could represent an interesting source of income in developing countries where the plant may find environmental conditions adapt for its growth. The oil-containing seeds of Jatropha curcas L., could be a possible feedstock for biodiesel production. However, the harvesting of this plant presents several problems due to the presence of fruits that are in bunches and that do not ripen simultaneously: for these reasons, mechanical solutions aimed at facilitating harvesting operations are still limited. In fact, the main cost of Jatropha curcas L cultivation is the labor cost for fruit collection. Other costs include the mechanical equipment and the raw materials usage costs. Three different harvesting techniques, classified according to the level of mechanization, have been analyzed: the manual harvesting system, fully mechanical harvesting, and semi-mechanical harvesting systems. Based on data collected in harvesting field test carried out in Cuba, the harvesting cost for Jatropha fruit is calculated in order to identify the best practice among the three different harvesting systems. At the present, the harvesting of Jatropha fruits is mainly based on manual operations. This practice results very strenuous and time-consuming. The paper will compare the mentioned three harvesting methods and their economic sustainability. Assessing the economic performances of different harvesting systems may contribute to the scientific literature towards the introduction of innovations useful to spread the Jatropha cultivation

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with L A Berry. Berry joined the Navy in August of 1940. He completed training in electrical ordinance. Berry served as a striker in the electrical division aboard the USS Nevada (BB-36) until it ran aground at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. He shares some of his experiences while stationed in Hawaii prior to and during the fateful attack. He then transferred to the USS Lexington (CV-16). The interview ends with his experiences at Pearl Harbor and does not elaborate on his continued service aboard the Lexington

    Linear stability of a liquid flow through a poroelastic channel

    A liquid flow through a channel is studied based on the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem, where the lower wall of the channel is occupied by the saturated poroelastic medium. The linear stability analysis is investigated in detail for arbitrary value of the wavenumber. The eigenvalues are computed numerically by using the Chebyshev spectral collocation method. The effect of physical parameters, for instance, permeability, elasticity as well as their combined effect on the unstable modes are examined

    The Potential Economic Impacts of the Proposed Development Corridor in Egypt: An Interregional CGE Approach

    Egypt has proposed a new development corridor. A main component is a desert-based expansion of the current highway network. This network is founded on a 1200-kilometer north-south route that starts at a proposed new port near El-Alemein and runs parallel to the Nile Valley to the border of Sudan. It also includes 21 east-west branches that connect the main axis to densely populated cities on the Nile. The paper is a first attempt at an economic assessment of the impact of this proposed corridor. It uses an interregional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model developed and reported in a prior paper. Here, that model is integrated with a more detailed geo-coded transportation network model to help quantify the spatial effects of transportation cost change due specifically to changes in accessibility induced by the corridor.
