Pursuing Racial Justice Together with Robin Diangelo
Sponsored by the Honors College Visiting Scholars program, Dr. Robin DiAngelo is an American author, consultant, and facilitator working in the fields of critical discourse analysis and whiteness studies. In 2011 she coined the term White Fragility in an academic article which has influenced the international dialogue on race. She has numerous publications and books. Her 2018 book, White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list upon its release and has remained there for over two years. To date, it is being translated into 10 languages.DiAngelo is an Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington. She is a two-time winner of the Student’s Choice Award for Educator of the Year at the University of Washington’s School of Social Work. The vast majority of visually impaired people are not blind; they have varying degrees of low vision. Most are also older people and many have additional ‘community care’ needs. The Department of Health commissioned Robin Lovelock to review recent non-medical research relevant to the support of this large and growing group, making recommendations on future research priorities to reflect these demographic patterns. The results are published here for the first time. A Directory of the individual studies identified in 1990–91 forms an Appendix. This body of work, conducted in a variety of academic, statutory, and voluntary sector settings, is discussed both in historical and current context, with particular reference to the agenda for change set by the White Paper Caring for People. In a new Preface and Postscript, the author provides an update on significant research and development work since the original review, demonstrating the continuing applicability of his original analysis and recommendations to the full implementation of the 'community care' legislation in relation to people with a visual impairment

Keynote: A Conversation with Dr. Robin DeRosa and Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani
Robin DeRosa is the Director of the Open Teaching and Learning Lab at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. The Open Lab is a dynamic hub for praxis around pedagogical innovation, open education, and integrated approaches to teaching and learning. Robin is an editor at Hybrid Pedagogy, an open access journal that combines the strands of critical and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses for technology and new media in education. An advocate for public higher education, Robin is internationally known for her work designing learner-driven structures and approaches for courses, programs, and institutions that reduce barriers to college enrollment and completion and empower students to participate passionately in their own learning.
Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani is the Associate Vice Provost, Open Education at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia. He is an internationally-known advocate for open education whose research and practice currently focuses on open education, student-centered pedagogies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Rajiv is a recipient of the Robert E. Knox Master Teacher Award from the University of British Columbia, the Dean of Arts Teaching Excellence award at KPU, and the award for Excellence in Open Education from BCcampus. He is a co-founder of the Open Pedagogy Notebook, an Ambassador for the Center for Open Science, and serves on the boards of Virtually Connecting, NOBA Psychology, and KDocs Film Festival. An author of three open textbooks in Psychology, Rajiv’s most recent book is Open: The Philosophy and Practices that are Revolutionizing Education and Science (2017). Students Lack Effective Collaboration Skills
It has been seen through field experience and through research that students lack the ability to effectively learn through collaboration. The research has shown that there tends to be a lack of authentic learning when using collaboration projects/activities because students do not possess the skills that are needed to collaborate effectively. The ability to collaborate needs to be explicitly taught through modeling and scaffolding. This project examines research on the importance of collaborative learning and the required skills that students need to be successful. The project used research to develop a professional development session that allows teachers to see the importance of collaborative learning skills and provides resources that can be used in secondary education to explicitly teach the 21st century skill of collaboration to students. The professional development provides group norms, group roles, group contract, conflict resolution strategies, daily reflection for students, and a collaboration lesson. The session will be considered successful if teachers are able to use the resources in the classroom and provide qualitative data of students developing collaborative learning skills
Armand Robin: a pulsão politradutória
This study approaches the polytranslation impulse by analyzing its manifestation in the writings of the Breton poet translator Armand Robin (1912 - 1961). This impulse, bound to an intended metaphysics in Berman\u27s writings (1984) - defined as the romantic quest for the "pure language" —, is reevaluated in this essay focusing on the aspects concerning Robin mentioned previously. Although he forsakes being an Author and claims the denial of himself (rejection), underlying this exalted chronicle of non-translation there is an attempt to subvert an ethnocentric French tradition and an inner desire of authorship (reassurance and acceptance).Em sua obra L\u27épreuve de l\u27étranger (1984), Berman propõe uma teoria sobre o sujeito politradutor que vincula a pulsion du traduire do poète breton Armand Robin a uma visada metafísica — definida por este autor como a busca romântica da "pura língua". No presente ensaio, essas conclusões são reavaliadas a partir de referências inéditas sobre o poeta abordadas antecipadamente. Embora ele tenha renunciado a ser Autor e tenha proclamado a negação de si mesmo (rejeição), subjazem a essa crônica exaltada denominada non-traduction tanto a tentativa de subverter uma tradição francesa etnocêntrica quanto o desejo íntimo de se ver autor (afirmação e aceitação)
RoMEO Studies 6: Rights metadata for open-archiving
This is the final study in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open-archiving) which investigated the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues relating to academic author self-archiving of research papers. It reports the results of a survey of 542 academic authors showing the level of protection required for their open-access research papers. It then describes the selection of an appropriate means of expressing those rights through metadata and the resulting choice of Creative Commons licences. Finally it outlines proposals for communicating rights metadata via the Open Archives Initiative’s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)
ROBIN: A novel personal recommendation model based on information propagation
With the rapid development of the Internet technology, we have now entered the era of information overloading. Recommendation System technology can recommend web resources or information to people based on his/her personal preference, and has gotten a great deal of attention and development in recent years. In this paper, by combining collaborative filtering technology and information propagation principle, we proposed ROBIN, a novel recommendation model. The ROBIN model achieves a good recommendation effect by propagating the relationship information between users and resources. Based on the ROBIN model, we designed and implemented tag recommendation algorithm named ROBIN-T. For evaluating our proposed method, we have conducted tag recommendation experiments on three real datasets and the results show that the ROBIN-T algorithm achieves good performance when compared with classical approaches. RoMEO Studies 2: How academics wish to protect their open-access research paper
This paper is the second in a series of studies (see Gadd, E., C. Oppenheim, and S. Probets. RoMEO Studies 1: The impact of copyright ownership on author-self-archiving. Journal of Documentation. 59(3) 243-277) emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open-archiving). It considers the protection for research papers afforded by UK copyright law, and by e-journal licences. It compares this with the protection required by academic authors for open-access research papers as discovered by the RoMEO academic author survey. The survey used the Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) as a framework for collecting views from 542 academics as to the permissions, restrictions, and conditions they wanted to assert over their works. Responses from self-archivers and non-archivers are compared. Concludes that most academic authors are primarily interested in preserving their moral rights, and that the protection offered research papers by copyright law is way in excess of that required by most academics. It also raises concerns about the level of protection enforced by e-journal licence agreement
The works of the multipurposes poet-translator Armand Robin: marks of a fleeing existence
Armand Robin era um tradutor prodigioso: foram encontrados textos dele traduzidos de pelo menos 22 línguas, sem contar os que desapareceram. Para seu boletim de escutas na rádio, foi possível enumerar 18 línguas fluentemente receptadas. Prodigioso pelo número de línguas, ele também o era por sua concepção da tradução; o sentido não lhe bastava: era necessário recriar o original, sentido por sentido, som por som, língua por língua. Desde a publicação de sua primeira obra, Ma Vie sans Moi, Armand Robin quis que suas traduções fossem apresentadas como obras de sua própria autoria, e mesmo que não se pudesse fazer a diferença entre as duas, antes de dar definitivamente a prioridade às traduções, tanto nas publicações quanto na rádio. Em 1942, a Gallimard publica o seu único “romance” Le temps qu’il fait, O trabalho maior sobre o poeta privilegiou o sujeito tradutor, com ênfase à problemática da pulsão, mais visível nos textos do sujeito tradutor.Neste artigo, privilegiamos a obra do sujeito escritor, e mais especificamente a sua escritura, em seu romance e em seus fragmentos, como forma de aprofundar sua experiência e buscar entender o tão dramático e peculiar discurso presente em sua obra.Armand Robin was a prodigious translator, that is to say: his works were translated into 22 different languages, not to mention his missing texts. During his bulletin on the radio, it was also possible to notice that 18 idioms were fluently received. This poet was notable not only because of his capacity of knowing several languages, but also because of his conception about translation. According to Robin, the meaning was not enough; a target text (TT) must be based on the recreation of the source text (ST), signification by signification; sound by sound, language by language. Since his first book, Ma Vie sans Moi, was released, Robin always wanted his translated texts were presented as works of his own, creating the idea that there was no difference between ST and TT, before giving priority to translation, either in publications or in radio transmissions. In 1942, ÉditionsGallimard published his single “novel”, Le temps qu’ilfait, which was object of studies related to the poet as a translator, emphasizing the pulse of life, which was visible in his TTs. However, in our paper, we are going to observe his production as an author, more specifically his writings, his novel and some of his fragments, in order to deepen the knowledge about his experience and also understand the dramatic and peculiar speech which is present in his writings
