    Root foraging and avoidance in hyperaccumulator and excluder plants: a rhizotron experiment

    Aims: Metal hyperaccumulation is a rare phenomenon described for an increasing number of plant taxa. In this study we investigated the root growth responses of the well-known nickel, zinc, cadmium hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens and of the metal tolerant (non-accumulator) Stellaria media, in order to observe root foraging vs avoidance responses to nickel. Methods: To allow for observations of root growth and foraging preferences, two accessions of Noccaea caerulescens and two accessions of Stellaria media orginating from high nickel and low nickel habitats were grown in rhizotrons with localized nickel enrichment. Results: The root density in the control and nickel-enriched soil areas in the rhizotrons with different N. caerulescens accessions had distinct responses: moderate nickel avoidance was recorded for the non-nickel accession, while a clear foraging response was observed in N. caerulescens from the nickel accession. In contrast, nickel rooting avoidance was observed for both S. media accessions and was more pronounced in the non-nickel accession. Conclusions: This study shows that N. caerulescens originating from different accessions responded differently to soil nickel enrichment, with the nickel accession of N. caerulescens actively foraging for nickel, suggesting a physiological adaptation and demand for this metal. In contrast, a clear nickel avoidance response by a metal tolerant species, S. media, was observed in this study, a phenomenon which has not been previously described; this suggests that root avoidance responses might play a role in the adaptation of metal tolerant species to Ni-rich soils

    Differences and similarities in selenium biopathways in Astragalus, Neptunia (Fabaceae) and Stanleya (Brassicaceae) hyperaccumulators

    Background and Aims: Selenium hyperaccumulator species are of primary interest for studying the evolution of hyperaccumulation and for use in biofortification because selenium is an essential element in human nutrition. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the distributions of selenium in the three most studied hyperaccumulating taxa (Astragalus bisulcatus, Stanleya pinnata and Neptunia amplexicaulis) are similar or contrasting, in order to infer the underlying physiological mechanisms. Methods: This study used synchrotron-based micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) techniques to visualize the distribution of selenium and other elements in fresh hydrated plant tissues of A. racemosus, S. pinnata and N. amplexicaulis. Key Results: Selenium distribution differed widely in the three species: in the leaves of A. racemosus and N. amplexicaulis selenium was mainly concentrated in the pulvini, whereas in S. pinnata it was primarilylocalized in the leaf margins. In the roots and stems of all three species, selenium was absent in xylem cells, whereas it was particularly concentrated in the pith rays of S. pinnata and in the phloem cells of A. racemosus and N. amplexicaulis. Conclusions: This study shows that Astragalus, Stanleya and Neptunia have different selenium-handling physiologies, with different mechanisms for translocation and storage of excess selenium. Important dissimilarities among the three analysed species suggest that selenium hyperaccumulation has probably evolved multiple times over under similar environmental pressures in the US and Australia

    Abstract: Aims. Rinorea cf. bengalensis is a Ni hyperaccumulator which occurs in Sabah (Malaysia), on Borneo Island, that is able to accumulate considerable amounts of Ni and influences the Ni cycle in surface soil layers, both in terms of Ni concentration and Ni isotopic composition. In this study, the biogeochemical processes underpinning Ni isotopic fractionation in the soil-plant system and the mechanisms regulating Ni homeostasis in R. cf. bengalensis plants were elucidated. Methods: Two specimens of R. cf. bengalensis of different ages and associated surface soils were collected from ultramafic soils in Sabah. Soil mineralogy, Ni concentrations, speciation and isotopic signatures were subsequently determined in plant and soil samples. Results: Nickel in R. cf. bengalensis leaves is mainly complexed with citrate. Soil Ni available fractions have different δ60Ni values depending on the Ni bearing phases. Rinorea cf. bengalensis specimens take up lighter Ni isotopes and a pronounced isotopic fractionation within the plant is observed, especially in the young specimen. Conclusions: The results suggest that the observed fractionation in the young plant can be attributable to kinetic effects (lighter isotopes move faster), which become less evident in the older specimen, as Ni is redistributed and homogenized through phloem loading and unloading processes

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
