No full text
Internet-of-Thing (IoT) faces various security attacks. Different solutions exist to mitigate the intrusion problems. However, the existing solutions lack behind in dealing with heterogeneity of attack sources and features. The future anticipated demand of devices' connections also urge the need of new solutions addressing the concerns of time consumption and complexity. In this article, we show a novel solution for the intrusion detection in IoT framework. We configure the intrusion detection in the edge computing layer so that the effect of the attack is not propagated to the clouds. Our solution uses cerebellar model articulation controller with kernel map. This combination is very new in the direction of intrusion detection; hence, it emphasizes the novelty of our proposed intrusion detection solution. We name our solution as Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller based Intrusion Detection System (CMACIDS). Additionally, we use spline fitting to the kernel mapping for the model fit; this adds on another novel contribution to CMACIDS. The results obtained with our detection system are compared with the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of complexity, false alarms, and precision of detection. The analysis of the comparative study proves the efficiency of the solution and makes CMACIDS suitable for IoT paradigm. </p

No full text
The rapid advancement of wireless communication technology has focused researcher's attention on reconfigurable antennas with multiple input and output (MIMO) and cognitive radio operation in high-data-rate modern wireless applications. Reconfigurable antennas perform various functions in terms of operating frequency, radiation pattern, and polarization. Electronic, mechanical, physical, and optical switches are used in reconfigurable antennas as control elements to adjust the switching mechanism and accomplish dynamic tuning. Electronic switches are the most widely used component in reconfigurable antennas because of their effectiveness, dependability, and simplicity in integrating with microwave circuitry. In this paper, a review of various kinds of efficient implementation methods for electrically controlled frequency reconfigurable antennas are proposed. More electrical switches are being used for reconfiguration such as micro electromechanical systems (MEMS), P-type, intrinsic, N-type (PIN), and varactor diodes. Even though PIN diodes are more frequently employed for reconfiguration due to their stability and constant variation in internal inductor and capacitor values. This study provides a deep analysis of the PIN diode usage in reconfigurable antennas and how to reduce the diodes in different microstrip reconfigurable antenna structures

In this art study report, the colourful world of Sevim Burak, one of the notable figures of the Republican Period of Turkish Literature between 1950-1970 with her individual stories with social background and innovative art perspective, has been mirrored, and the play “İşte Baş İşte Gövde İşte Kanatlar” was chosen for the stage application. The way we draw on ourselves through this study has been to follow the apparent manifestations of the concept "other" and the culturalization of subject in Burak's implicit narration. The unheard voices of the excluded, alienated characters in Burak`s texts are become visible and felt in her works by breaking and fracturing of the language. Burak, who has produced such works in which fact cannot be distinguished from dream, time and space are obscured, and future and past are intertwined, criticizes the order in which she lives and represents the "other" through her works. Considering the characteristics of Burak's art in all this essence and form, we can say that understanding the language created by the author with a free flow of consciousness is only possible through analysing the cultural metaphors she uses in her plays and evaluating all of her works together which are reflections of her own life. Throughout the course of our study, we aimed to bring the ignored voice of the “other” out into the open through the author's extraordinary language and to reflect this visibility into our performance. We have tried to analyse the author` s world which does not reveal itself easily, working on the play “İşte Baş İşte Gövde İşte Kanatlar”, which is the focus of our art study report, both theoretically and practically. The psychoanalytic approach that we have adopted as a starting point in this way has helped us to find our way through every time we are lost and supported our creativity in terms of both essence and form.

Energy system projects in countries like India are often failing. Not only because of technical or economical barriers, but mainly institutional and social issues are at the base of these failures. A co-creation, or participatory, process to align all demands and requirements of the different stakeholders is required. This paper takes evidence from literature on co-creation and energy systems and from case study research in India to help define an approach towards such a co-creation process as a use case for the application of the Responsible Innovation Systems framework. A discussion on co-creation as a solution generates a number of recommendations, after which a set of characteristics is concluded that the co-creation process of energy systems should have towards a responsible approach, so that more robust and sustainable innovations might emerge.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Energy and IndustryDelft Centre for Entrepreneurshi

Recommendations for Improvement of the Building Design by Evaluating the Indoor Environmental Quality of the Pilot Floating House Project in Macabebe, the Philippines: floating house, the Philippines

No full text
This thesis aims to provide passive design recommendations to improve the design quality of low income houses in the Philippines, by evaluating the indoor environmental quality of the pilot floating house project. The pilot project is the result of researches carried out by Pieter Ham and Joran Van Schaik to find a solution for the housing backlog, poor living conditions and the seasonal natural disasters in the low lying areas of the Philippines. The thesis focuses on the indoor environmental quality, the thermal comfort of the pilot house. Prior to the field visit, the significant parameters for the in situ measurement and the comfort standards for the region are chosen by literature studies. A systematic measurement plan is made in order to perform in situ measurements and field study. The measurements are done for a period of nine days. In addition to this, one of the objectives of the research is to develop an economical measuring and remotely accessible monitoring device for the thermal comfort parameters. It is achieved by programming Raspberry Pi and DHT22 temperature and humidity sensor. Hypotheses are formulated after the field visit. Then the measured data is sorted systematically and analysed. This analysed data is further studied and the comfort performance of the house is compared with the comfort standards of the region. It is found that the performance is quite satisfactory for all the spaces in the house except the attic space, which has higher temperatures than the upper comfort level. Moreover the usability of the existing doors needs improvement in terms of controlling privacy and air velocity. For the improvements, it is envisioned to have minimal interventions to the existing design and construction. For this two options are put forward. Both the options are compared with the existing design by making DesignBuilder models. The simulation results of the models are compared to find the better performing strategy. Final design is made with the inference from the comparison of the simulation results, and visits to the local architecture. From the final design, the following design improvement recommendations are put forward for the housing type: “openings for ventilation at sleeping height in the attic floor” “openings at top of the roof to enhance stack effect” “collapsible doors with louvered shutters for providing users with more option in controlling air velocity and privacy”Finch Floating HomeArchitecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Building Technology | Sustainable Desig

Chirality transfer from chiral solvents and its memory in an azobenzene derivative exhibiting photo-switchable racemization

No full text
The transfer and dynamic fixation of chirality in cyclic azobenzenes using R-(+)-1-phenylethylalcohol (R-PEA) and S-(-)-1-phenylethylalcohol (S-PEA) as solvents or additives are investigated. The cyclic azobenzenes used in this study carry 1,5-dioxynaphthalene moiety as rotating unit, connected to the photoisomerizing (E-Z) azobenzene unit with spacers of varying lengths. With the suitable lengths of the spacers the molecules exhibit stable enantiomers originated from the element of planar chirality in the E form due to the stopped rotation of the rotor, while in the Z form the allowed rotation results in racemization. The CD spectra of racemic compounds in E form in chiral solvents were inert or almost negligible before irradiation, while 366 nm irradiation causing E-Z photoisomerization resulted in induction of clear CD bands. The thermal or photochemical reverse Z-E isomerization causes a change in the CD spectra to the new ones which are reasonably matching with the spectra of the pure enantiomers recorded in non-chiral solvents. The obtained new CD spectra are maintained even in a racemic solvent system attained by the dilution with an equal amount of chiral solvent of opposite stereo structure. These results indicate that the chirality is transferred from the chiral solvents or additives to the racemizing Z form of cyclic azobenzene and it is fixed in the non-racemizing E form. The molecule without racemization in both E and Z forms did not show any significant induced CD bands irrespective of E-Z isomerizations. The molecule showing racemization in E and Z form just show the non fixed induced CD. The property of the photo-switchable racemization is necessary for the effective transfer and temporal fixation of the chirality in this type of chirality sensors

Designing for transparent intentions in AI powered energy systems

The development of intelligent systems has created enormous opportunities to improve and change human lives. These systems are heavily reliant and driven by data and algorithms to achieve optimal user experiences for myriad users. However, these data-driven products/services are multi-dimensional and multifaceted and do not necessarily have the same meaning and value to all its users. Different users may have different intentions of use for the system. Each user could also define different goals that they may want to achieve using the system. Additionally, what goals the organization has for the users might not align with what the end users what for themselves. These differences in intentions are called as multi-intentionality. In such scenarios, traditional design enforces the idea of simplifying interfaces that frame or dictate certain intentions of use for people. But this can be considered a sensitive issue because the end-users are unaware of these other potentially conflicting intentions. This creates an increase in tension between intelligent systems and the needs of end-users but also a sense of mistrust. Hence, there is a need to create a sense of legibility to the users on the behavior of these systems and the other intentions of use in order to enable trust. In this project, a way to help users sustainably consume energy is explored through the lens of multi-intentionality. The main aim of the research is to explore the meaning of intentions and multi-intentionality in the given context. Following this, the goal becomes to concretely represent the multi-intentionality into something more tangible for the users and applicable to the real-world context. The initial research resulted in identifying intention profiles for users, the intentionality gap, and the need to capture intentions that is required in order to bring more legibility and transparency to a system that the user might interact with. Through multiple iterations, a digital interface is created that through various communication data, data visualizations and recommendation designs tries to bridge the gap of intentionality between the two stakeholders (user and energy provider). By capturing intentions, portraying the tradeoffs of user choices, showcasing their energy use, presenting their energy profile with respect to their goals, designing transparent recommendations an effective proposal to bridge the gap between intentions is made. The designs were made with concrete thinking on how it could be applied to a real world problem and were validated through tests with users.Design for Interactio

Ultrasonic assessment of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes offer the potential for manufacturing cost savings and rapid insertion into service through production of near net shape components for complicated structures. Use of these parts in high reliability applications such as those in the aerospace industry will require nondestructive characterization methods to ensure post-process material quality in as-built condition. Ultrasonic methods can be used for this quality verification. Depending on the application, the service life of AM components can be sensitive to the part surface condition. The surface roughness and layered structure inherent to the electron-beam powder-bed fusion process necessitates new approaches to evaluate subsurface material integrity in its presence. Experimental methods and data analytics may improve the evaluation of as-built additively manufactured materials. This paper discusses the assessment of additively manufactured EBM Ti-6Al-4V panels using ultrasonic methods and the data analytics applied to evaluate material integrity. The assessment was done as an exploratory study as the discontinuities of interest in these test samples were not known when the measurements were performed. Water immersion ultrasonic techniques, including pulse-echo and through transmission with 10 MHz focused transducers, were used to explore the material integrity of as-built plates. Subsequent destructive mechanical tests of specimens extracted from the plates provided fracture locations indicating critical flaws. To further understand the effect of surface-roughness, an evaluation of ultrasonic response in the presence of as-built surfaces and with the surface removed was performed. The assessment of additive manufactured EBM Ti-6Al-4V panels with ultrasonic techniques indicated that ultrasonic energy was attenuated by the as-built surface roughness. In addition, feature detection was shown to be sensitive to experimental ultrasonic parameters and flaw morphology

Flow Field Predictions of Bluff Body Introduced Micro Combustor

No full text
AbstractCombustion in micro scale is the area having wide scope in this era of miniaturization of energy efficient devices. Some important areas of application are in the field of propulsion as a micro thruster and as an apt replacement for conventional batteries by accounting the high energy density of micro combustors. Numerical simulation of combustion is a challenging process due to associated chemical reaction, unsteadiness and non equilibrium nature. In this work a numerical study has been carried out in a typical non premixed micro combustor. The steady simulations of micro combustor without and with bluff body are analyzed for different fuel inlet velocities. For studying the effect of location of bluff body, the micro combustor with wall positioned bluff body is separately analyzed by changing the position of bluff body along axial direction. The effect of different bluff body shapes and significance on its location in combustion process is analyzed. The results are presented in the form of contours of velocity, temperature and mass fractions
