Bilateral ischemic maculopathy in a patient with AIDS
No full textPURPOSE. To describe ischemic maculopathy as a cause of sudden bilateral decreased vision in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS. A 44-year-old HIV-positive woman presented with bilateral decreased vision and normal examination, except for pale maculae and retinal vascular tortuosity. Fluorescein angiography showed bilateral enlargement of the foveal avascular zone with perifoveal dye leakage. CONCLUSIONS. Ischemic maculopathy is a potential cause of decreased vision in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, even in patients with immune sustained recovery. This condition can be almost totally reversible, in the absence of other concomitant ocular pathologies

No full textWe report the clinical findings of a patient with severe bilateral keratectasia 34 years after a penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in both eyes. An otherwise healthy 67-year-old man complained of deterioration of the eyesight in both eyes over the last 6 months. The patient was diagnosed with bilateral keratoconus at the age of 32 years, and he underwent a bilateral PK. At presentation, visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye and light perception in the left eye. A Pentacam pachymetric map revealed a central pachymetry of 720 µm in the right eye and of 710 µm in the left eye, as well as an average paracentral pachymetry of 436 and 270 µm in the 9-mm zone in the right and the left eye, respectively. Corneal topography revealed bilateral irregular and asymmetric bowing with generalized steepening and high corneal power. No full textCASE REPORT: A 28 year-old male attended our Emergency Department with a traumatic choroidal rupture and macular haemorrhage. After pneumatic displacement of the haemorrhage with C(3)F(8) and tissue plasminogen activator, the haemorrhage was reabsorbed and visual acuity (VA) improved. Three months later the patient presented with decreased VA and a juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) that was treated with intravitreal bevacizumab. One year after a single bevacizumab injection the CNV remained inactive, with a final VA of 0.5. DISCUSSION: Intravitreal bevacizumab injection is a new and effective treatment for traumatic CNV. In our patient, in contrast to other aetiologies, the CNV needed no more than one Avastin() injection to be inactivated, after one year of follow-up
Tonic Pupil and Corneal Anesthesia after Vitrectomy and Encircling Band for Retinal Detachment in an Ex-Premature Child
No full textAn 11-year-old boy presented with a total retinal detachment in his right eye. He had a bilateral 360° argon laser treatment for an active retinopathy of prematurity performed after his birth. He underwent an uneventful pars plana vitrectomy, encircling band, 810-nm diode endolaser and heavy silicone oil (Densiron®) endotamponade. A tonic pupil and abolition of corneal sensitivity, with a large epithelial defect, were observed during the postoperative period. We discuss the possible etiopathogenic mechanisms of the long and short ciliary nerves damage, and the role that retinopathy of prematurity and retinal detachment laser treatment and the encircling band placement might have played in the development of the tonic pupil and the corneal anesthesia
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
