Halal Certification in Spain: A Pathway to Social Integration and Cultural Understanding in a Globalized World
TFG del Grau en Relacions Internacionals tutoritzat per Valeria Bello and Laura SalzanoThis research explores the role of halal certification in promoting intercultural understanding and social integration within the Spanish context. While commonly perceived solely as a religious label, halal certification encompasses broader values such as ethical consumption, health, and sustainability. Using a mixed-methods approach by combining ethnographic interviews and quantitative surveys, this study examines how halal-certified products are viewed and accessed by both Muslim and non-Muslim communities in diverse neighborhoods of Barcelona. Findings reveal that halal certification not only strengthens the visibility of Muslim culture but also fosters mutual respect, reduces prejudice, and creates opportunities for cultural exchange. The results suggest that halal certification can serve as a practical and symbolic tool for building bridges between communities in an increasingly globalized and pluralistic society

CFD studies and experimental validation of the convective heat transfer coefficient in non-fully developed flows applied to conventional geometries used in particle accelerators
In the field of Particle Accelerators engineering, the design of the cooling channels of its components has been extensively based on experimental correlations for the calculation of convective heat transfer coefficients. In this scenario, this work is focused on studying whether the experimental correlations are conservative when the flow is turbulent in fully developed and non-fully developed regions. For this research, simulation models have been developed for turbulent flows in fully developed and non-fully developed regions, all of them for cooling channels with a 10 mm inner diameter. In the first case, for a circular channel, turbulence models have been studied, and comparative studies with respect to experimental correlations and previous studies performed at ALBA have been carried out. Simulation models based on the coefficients obtained from experimentally observed correlations, CFD models and an experimental validation of a mirror with inside cooling, have been performed in the second case.Postprint (published version

Time and the unfinished: A gradual transformation of an industrial site in Anderlecht
The Urban Architecture graduation studio focuses on the topic of spolia, a term from archaeology that defines the leftovers of a building that find themselves back in a new structure. Spolia is about reuse, finding value in what is there, and how it can acquire new meanings by being transformed or relocated. It is also about stratification, of adding layers to a story that continues when the spolia is given a new life. The research focused on time and the unfinished, exploring the relationship between architecture and time. Architecture is subjected to the social forces of time, defined by the change of users and functions over time. Buildings are usually designed to be a finished product, with a specific use, leaving the time factor out of the equation. This often leads to vacancy or underuse, due to the inability of the building to adapt to new uses or undergo a transformation to accommodate new uses. Aiming for the unfinished allows time to take its course. Like spolia, a building can acquire new meanings – or a new life – when transformed. This stratification of layers of time, materials and uses, turns the building into a story that will never be complete, evolving and adapting to respond to occurrences over time.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Explaining Variation in Public Support for Cuts in Levels of Unemployment Benefits Spending Across OECD Countries
There is little doubt about the salience of the unemployment problem in the political
agenda across the OECD countries. The sharp economic crisis suffered by the advanced
capitalist countries during the early nineties has brought about, with very few exceptions, an
important rise in unemployment rates across countries. In such a context, there has been an
intense debate about the need to reform labour market regulations in order to make them
more efficient. The policy packages implemented across countries have varied widely and
they are well documented (for instance, Esping Andersen and Regini, 2000). What these
different reforms have in common is that they pretend to reconcile competitive capitalism
with social justice. This involves the general experience of potential constraints on
unemployment benefits for citizens.Peer reviewe
Explaining the determinants of public support for cuts in unemployment benefits across OCDE countries
This article analyses comparative data for the last half of the 1990s to investigate the determinants of individual and cross-national variation in public support for cuts in unemployment benefits spending. The authors consider public opinion on unemployment benefits retrenchment as a product not only of individual-level characteristics but also of national-level features. With few exceptions, the latter features have been limited by previous studies to the institutional characteristics of welfare policies across countries operationalized in a superficial way: i.e. the type of welfare regime. This article proposes a more detailed operationalization of the institutional characteristics of welfare policies by considering cross-country variations in the generosity of unemployment protection. The authors also take into account a structural characteristic of the polities considered here: i.e. the seriousness of the unemployment problem. Even if the results are tentative, the authors believe they open the ‘black box of welfare types’ that until very recently has been the predominant explanation when accounting for aggregated variation in public opinion on welfare states

Caracteres y origen. Trad. This article aims initially at establishing the specific characteristics of the concept of value in the restoration of heritage buildings, based on those defined long ago by Riegl, and those most recently presented by Jokilehto, and directed to the field of architecture, in which “the basic requirement [of a conservation architect] is to be capable of working in a team” (Jokilehto, 2007: 279). The main aim is to expose the approaches developed by the authors in order to face the difficulty of processes in which there must necessarily be various opinions by professionals with specific activities, such as historians, conservators, engineers and architects, who often have confronted valuation criteria. Those approaches are based on a method developed by the authors, and entitled Systemic Method for Architectural Conservation; it has been applied in specific Master programmes, designed for architects and other professionals, at the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, coupled with the results of empirical research La formación de los arquitectos restauradores. Elaboración de un modelo didáctico (Genís-Vinyals, 2014), which was the results of a doctoral dissertation in that same University. Prior to the presentation of this method, it was considered necessary to specify the concrete character of the different concepts of value applied in architectural conservation, which were also developed based on the personal reflection of the authors and on the differences that separate them from the two above-quoted authors, who are nevertheless undeniable points of reference
