Elisabetta I come Cinzia.
The defeat of the Spanish Armada in the Channel in 1588 turned ‘a weak and feeble woman’ into one of the most relevant characters of late 16th-century European history: Elizabeth I, the Tudor Queen, was considered a semi-divine creature whom the myth, by comparing her to Moon goddesses like Diana and Cinthia, had made known as Semper Eadem. The identification of the queen with Cinthia became more and more evident after the events occurred in 1588, when she was hailed as the moon goddess par excellence in a series of texts written by her contemporaries. It was in that period, the last decades of the 16th century, that Sir Walter Raleigh, courtier, poet and seaman, wrote ‘The Poems to Cynthia’: a collection of short poems where Elizabeth I, the lady of the seas, is addressed as his beloved. The role of Elizabeth as Cinthia is evident above all in Raleigh’s ‘Last Book of the Ocean to Cynthia’, an unfinished poem where the author, desperate for being in disgrace, appeals to her clemency and addresses her as the empress of the ocean

AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT: AN INCREASINGLY TOPICAL LESSON ON GLOBAL WARMING This paper is about Ian McEwan’s 'Solar' (2010), a novel on climate change and human behaviour in emergency situations. Although it is not a climate novel, 'Solar' shares with this genre imminent catastrophes, a sense of guilt and need to intervene without wasting time. Through Michael Beard, the protagonist of the novel, and the way he abuses the health of his body, McEwan reveals and ridicules how we abuse the resources of our planet and teaches us an important ethical and moral lesson

The Literary Side of the Armada
The Anglo-Spanish War in the 16th century reached its climax in August 1588, when King Philip’s Felicissima Armada challenged Queen Elizabeth’s fleet in the waters of the Channel. If the outcome of the war has been much commented on and debated throughout the centuries, the impact the war had on literature has been neglected for a long time. This book presents to scholars, students and readers how the Armada was dealt with in the literature of the countries involved in the conflict. It offers a view on the Armada from both Spanish and English voices: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser and Drayton are flanked by Góngora, Cervantes and Lope de Vega
Greene’s ‘Quip for an Upstart Courtier’, or Elizabethan England between Tradition and Novelty
The growth of a new wealthy middle-class in Tudor England brought about a great social confusion, which became evident through the inappropriate use of clothing and a particular interest in fashions from abroad. The confusion
provoked by the excess of apparel turned to be a good topic for English priests who used it in their sermons to teach sobriety and modesty as the right measure of earthly life. The sin of extravagance in apparel became a favourite theme in Stubbes’s 'Anatomie of Abuses' and in many homilies and sermons throughout the 16th century. If preachers saw pride as the vice to be defeated, prose writers like Robert Greene used it as a good ironic weapon to describe Tudor society’s covetousness and moral decline. In his 'Quip for an Upstart Courtier' (1592), Greene deals with the “abuses that pride had bred in England” and denounces the lack of moral values in young men who had become of rank
