Full text linkIl volume indaga le trasformazioni nel ruolo sociale e pubblico delle donne nella nuova realtà istituzionale del principato attraverso la ricostruzione della biografia e dei legami politici di Agrippina Maggiore, nipote di Augusto. Tale prospettiva consente di illuminare i principali snodi di contrasto politico verificatisi all’interno e all’esterno della domus Augusta nelle fasi di ‘costruzione’ degli assetti dinastici del principato e di prima sperimentazione delle nuove dinamiche relazionali e cerimoniali ‘di corte’, valorizzando la dimensione ‘al femminile’. L’obiettivo di questo studio è verificare, attraverso il serrato confronto con una documentazione ricca e complessa, le linee di continuità ovvero di cesura fra le esperienze di opposizione politica animate da Giulia Maggiore e Giulia Minore, rispettivamente madre e sorella di Agrippina, e quella vissuta dalla protagonista, nel tentativo di far emergere dai dati disponibili non solo la natura, composizione e finalità del gruppo che si raccoglieva intorno alla matrona ma anche i profili di un’ideologia alternativa a quella professata dal nascente assetto istituzionale. Il volume concorrere, dunque, non solo alla ricostruzione del profilo biografico di Agrippina Maggiore ma anche a definire i gruppi politici che animavano la dialettica del tempo, ricostruendone l’identità, la struttura interna, gli obiettivi e la progettualità. Infine il volume si configura come contributo alla definizione delle dinamiche dell’azione politica al femminile nella prima età imperiale

Full text linkA.A. Barret, in his book of 2002, describes Livia as the ‘First Lady of Imperial
Rome’, in order to illustrate the exceptional nature of the role played by the wife of
Augustus within the new political and social context of the empire, suggesting that she
was the first woman to assume this role. Augustus’ choices concerning the wife reveal
his will to gradually ensure for Livia a prominent position within the new political reality
and to strengthen the public role of women of his gens in the new political con-text.
For her role as mother of Augustus’ heir and for her longevity, she benefited from this
experimentation, however ancient evidences show that the main subject of this process
was Octavia Minor, sister of Augustus. Through the analysis of some specific aspects of
her action (the role as mediator and as patron, the matrimonial strategies concerning
her children, the active role in the urban development of Rome) this paper tries to
show how the role of first ‘First Lady’ can be given to her
