No full textLa generazione degli architetti che si è formata negli anni ’70 ha trovato la strada aperta dal lavoro di quanti, avendo studiato nel decennio precedente, sono stati protagonisti del ’68 e che, aiutati dall’Angelus Novus della modernità, hanno spazzato via gran parte dei residui della nostalgia di un’aspramente criticata tradizione. Ciò che a essi non era stato possibile rimuovere è poi riaffiorato verso la fine degli anni ’70, rigurgitante e più forte di prima, sotto le insidie della post-modernità. La nostra formazione è rimasta immune da tali richiami, sia per un decennio di distanza dagli insegnamenti tradizionalisti, sia per una posizione di intransigente rifiuto nei confronti della seconda ondata, che invece mieteva vittime illustri anche tra gli iniziali oppositori. Una sorta di sindrome che, facendo leva sulla promessa di poter vivere una seconda giovinezza, ha temporaneamente impedito ad alcuni architetti che si sono formati negli anni ‘60 di sviluppare una sufficiente distanza critica dai fenomeni inizialmente contestati. La linea di ricerca che, indipendentemente, scegliemmo di seguire derivava dalla consapevolezza che solo dall’acquisizione di solide radici culturali, linguistiche, urbanistiche e tecniche dell’architettura – non come fatto vernacolare, ma come fenomeno esteso alla diversità delle popolazioni, dei climi e dei costumi – potesse derivare un sapere e un modus operandi in grado di orientare correttamente il progetto. Le sette invarianti del linguaggio moderno dell’architettura di Bruno Zevi, insieme alla ricerca della verità strutturale incarnata dalle opere dei grandi maestri quali PL. Nervi, B. Fuller, E. Freyssinet, R. Morandi, S. Musmeci, e alle teorie sugli spazi pubblici/privati di C. Alexander e S. Chermayeff e sul progetto degli spazi urbani di K. Lynch, hanno costituito le basi di un’attività formativa che oggi combina l’attività progettuale a quella universitaria di ricerca e di didattica. La differenza fondamentale insita nello studiare architettura in Italia e negli Stati Uniti in quegli anni era basata sulla scala dell’intervento. Se nelle facoltà italiane, sull’onda delle ipotesi quaroniane era di gran voga progettare un insediamento estensivo che talvolta poteva assumere dimensioni anche territoriali, in quelle nord americane l’oggetto di studio tendeva a non superare quello del grande centro polifunzionale urbano, il mixed use development – che in Italia in alcuni casi diventa il “centro direzionale” – nel quale la complessità delle funzioni si sviluppa quasi sempre a partire da un grande atrio coperto, a cui fa seguito un’aggregazione di volumi anche molto alti
Designing Risk-Averse Bidding Strategies in Sequential Auctions for Transportation Orders
No full textDesigning efficient bidding strategies for agents participating in multiple, sequential auctions remains an important challenge for researchers in agent-mediated electronic markets. The problem is particularly hard if the bidding agents have complementary (i.e. super-additive) utilities for the items being auctioned, such as is often the case in distributed transportation logistics. This paper studies the effect that a bidding agent’s attitude towards taking risks plays in her optimal, decision-theoretic bidding strategy. We model the sequential bidding decision process as an MDP and we analyze, for a category of expectations of future price distributions, the effect that a bidder’s risk aversion profile has on her decision-theoretic optimal bidding policy. Next, we simulate the above strategies, and we study the effect that an agent’s risk aversion has on the chances of winning the desired items, as well as on the market efficiency and expected seller revenue. The paper extends the results presented in our previous work (reported in [1]), not only by providing additional details regarding the analytical part, but also by considering a more complex and realistic market setting for the simulations. This simulation setting is based on a real transportation logistics scenario [2]), in which bidders have to choose between several combinations (bundles) of orders that can be contracted for transportation
