    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    The use of structural and non structural bone grafts and substitutes in osteotomies and arthrodesis of the hindfoot and ankle

    Introduction: Hindfoot fusions and osteotomies implicate the decision whether to use an autologous bone graft or an osteoconductive or –inductive substitute material in order to promote bony union and/or to support the correction of an additional hindfoot deformity. Evidence directing this decision is missing. The goal of this thesis is to retrospectively quantify the use of structural and non structural bone grafts in the foot and ankle clinic of the University of Basel over a one year period and to assess the time to union achieved with each different type of graft in specific hindfoot fusions or osteotomies carried out at level of the ankle, subtalar, chopart und Lisfranc joint. Methods: We retrospectively identified all patients who underwent fusions or osteotomies of the hindfoot from January 2006 until December 2006 using the in house electronic database „opdz“ recording all surgical procedures carried out at the institution of the University of Basel. Patients were then allocated to four treatment groups including: 1) ankle fusion and osteotomies 2) hindfoot (talonavicular, subtalar and triple) arthrodesis 3) calcaneal osteotomy and 4) midfoot arthrodesis and osteotomies. Within these major treatment categories, patients who received the same or no bone graft were further pooled in subgroups. Average time to union, rates of non - and delayed was calculated for each of the above mentioned subgroups and compared to each other within the respective treatment categories. Results: We identified 108 patients (50 male, 58 female, mean age 56.5 +/- 15.3 years) undergoing 90 fusions and 36 osteotomies at the level of the ankle, subtalar, Chopart or Lisfranc joint from January to December 2006. Thereby, 3 patients underwent revision of their arthrodesis within the follow up time. Another 15 underwent combined osteotomies or arthrodesis during the same procedure. Acellular allografts (Tutoplast®) and demineralised bone matrix (DBM) were the most often used structural and non structural bone graft respectively. Given the limited number of patients receiving the same graft in a specific procedure, comparison of time to union could only performed for structural and non structural bone grafts in triple/subtalar arthrodesis. In this category, there was no difference between acellular allograft mediated arthrodeses carried out either with or without DBM. Furthermore, there was no difference between in situ arthrodeses carried out without any graft or with the application of DBM. Conclusion: Many different structural and non structural bone grafts and substitutes are used in fusions and osteotomies in today’s foot and ankle surgery for structural support or acelleration of bony healing. The current literature only provides sparse data on the efficacy of both natural bone grafts and their substitutes. Their true efficacy must further be evaluated in prospective randomized studies

    Erhalt des vorderen Kreuzbandes in der Knieendoprothetik : Probleme und Möglichkeiten am Beispiel des Transversalträger-Tibiaplateaus (TTTP)

    Zusammenfassung: Anhand der in dieser Arbeit durchgeführten Studien konnten wichtige Erkenntnisse zum Erhalt des vorderen Kreuzbandes in der Knieendoprothetik gewonnen werden. Hierzu zählen zunächst die Analysen hinsichtlich des Ligament-Balancings an normalen Kniegelenken unter Verwendung eines neu entwickelten kraftbegrenzten Ligament-Balancers, welcher die Gap-Messungen ohne vorherige Knochenresektionen erlaubt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Versuche (Kapitel 1 und 2) sind darüber hinaus nicht nur für die konkrete Fragestellung wesentlich, sondern auch für die aktuellen konventionellen Operationstechniken grundlegend. Es konnten insbesondere die Thesen verifiziert werden, dass die Resektion von hinterem und/oder vorderem Kreuzband zu unterschiedlichen Gap-Änderungen führt und dass durch Aufspannen physiologischer Kniegelenke unter operationsähnlichen Bedingungen ungleiche Extensions- und Flexions-Gaps resultieren. Mit Hilfe von Belastungsversuchen (Kapitel 3) wurden die Thesen zur Primärstabilität bestätigt. Durch das neue TTTP-Prinzip konnte im Vergleich zur Implantation zweier unikondylärer Prothesen eine bessere Primärstabilität erreicht werden. Im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Prothesen wurde ein ähnliches Niveau erzielt. Des Weiteren konnten wichtige Detailfragen zur Designentwicklung des Transversalträger-Tibiaplateaus beantwortet werden. Sowohl die anatomischen Untersuchungen an Präparaten (Kapitel 4) als auch die Analyse der Implantatlage mit Hilfe CT-basierter Koordinatenmesstechnik (Kapitel 5) führten zur grundlegenden Feststellung, dass eine eher proximale Lage das Transversalträgers mit entsprechend kürzer ausgebildeten Gelenkflächenträgern günstig erscheint. ---------- Abstract: The studies included in this work offer important findings regarding retention of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during knee endoprosthesis. To begin, there is analysis regarding ligament balancing in normal joints using a recently developed force-determining ligament balancer that allows joint gap measurements without prior bone resection. The results of these studies (chapters 1 and 2) are relevant not only for the actual questions addressed, but also fundamental to current conventional operative techniques. In particular, this research verified the hypotheses that resections of the posterior and/or anterior cruciate ligaments lead to variable gap changes, and that knee mounting, such as that carried out during surgery, in a physiologically normal joint results in unequal flexion and extension gaps. Using loading trials (chapter 3), the theses regarding primary stability were confirmed. Better primary stability was obtained with the TSTP model than with implantation of two unicondylar prostheses. In comparison to conventional prostheses, a similar level was achieved. In addition, important details regarding development of the TSTP design were clarified. Both the anatomic investigations on specimens (chapter 4) and the analysis of implant position using CT-based coordination measurement techniques (chapter 5) led to fundamental conclusions that a relatively proximal position of the transversal support and a corresponding simplified, less-modular joint surface support design appear more favorable

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
