LIGHT-DARK CYCLE AND MITOTIC INDEX IN ASELLUS-AQUATICUS (L) (CRUSTACEA, ISOPODA)

    No full text
The circadian variation of the mitotic index during spermiohistogenesis was studied in Asellus aquaticus (L.). The actual number of metaphases and prometaphases was determined at the end of each hour of light or darkness over a 24 h period in animals bred under LD 12:12. The number of the metaphases and prometaphases decreases during the light period and sharply increases in the last 3 hrs of the dark period. This variation in the proliferative activity suggests that photoperiod can play a role in the synchronization of mitosis

Walking in the footsteps of the forefathers. The concept of “ancestry” between political use of molecular biology and indigenous territory, understood as a relationship between the living and the dead

Kichwa indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon Forest have been facing, for several years, a territorial conflict due to the establishment of a natural park on their homelands. In order to question the legitimacy of native claims, the Regional Government puts forward the hypothesis of the Andean kichwa migration. On the other hand, several NGOs hope to help this native people, using some biomolecular investigations that “scientifically certify” its Amazonian origins and its ancestral relationship with the surrounding territories. However, the natives seem lukewarm to the uncritical acquisition of a strategic discourse based on the rhetoric of “temporal primacy”. Thus, despite having assimilated an ancestral-genetic discourse, they reshape it in light of a more relational conception of territory. The latter, far from being considered an inheritance transmitted from one generation to the other, is seen as a peculiar space of conservation and generation of memory, in which the living constantly interweave present and active relationships with the dead

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are acidic, highly sulfated, complex, linear, natural heteropolysaccharides distributed among all organisms and composed of a variable number of repeating disaccharide units. Each disaccharide consists of one hexosamine, Dgalactosamine (GalN) or D-glucosamine (GlcN), and one uronic acid, D-glucuronic acid (GlcA) or L-iduronic acid (IdoA) or neutral hexose, D-galactose (Gal). According to the type of the monosaccharide units and the glycosidic bonds between them, GAGs can be divided into four main categories: (1) hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan (HA); (2) chondroitin sulfate (CS) and dermatan sulfate (DS); (3) heparan sulfate (HS) and heparin (Hep); and (4) keratan sulfate (KS) (Fig. 5.1). GAGs are present in all animals and some of them like Hep, CS and DS are extracted from terrestrial and marine soft tissues and cartilages for therapeutic uses. They are synthesized as polymers of repeating disaccharides with an N-acetyl-hexosamine (GalNAc or Glc- NAc) as one of the sugars. The alternating sugar is GlcA with the exception of KS which contains galactose instead. HA, very peculiar because it is neither sulfated nor covalently linked to a protein, containing GlcNAc, is not further modified, whereas the other classes are modified by: (1) the addition of O-sulfate groups on various hydroxyls (the three classes); (2) 5-epimerization of someGlcA residues to form IdoA residues (DS, HS, Hep); and (3) removal of acetyl residues from some hexosamine

Following many essays and a book published in 1992, the author could wrote a chapter on this important book on the Casino of Pio IV, considering the personality of the architect, archeologist and painter o Pirro Ligorio. The neapolitan artist, working between Rome and Ferrara, during the second half of the Sixteenth Century. The author was invited to write in the book by Antonio Paolucci and Cristoph L. Frommell that asked her to study the decoration (painting, stucco and mosaics) of the very famous monument, build up in the center of the Vatican Gardens. Thanks to many documents, published and unpublished, and to the cross references with the antiquarian and artistic culture of the time, the scholar has been able to reconstruct the iconography of the monument and the genesis of the artistic decoration –something incredibly new and complex in the roman context of the time

Virtual Identity, Plastic Identity. The „eighth Basque Province“ and the Genetically Imaginative Community

In this paper I propose to demonstrate how the anthropological view can highlight the effects of the relationship between ethnic nationalism and global processes. Showing the results of an ethnographical research conducted in 2015, I focus on the representation of social identity in the contemporary Basque Country. I emphasize the central role played by the new technologies for the identification of the Basque communities’ boundaries. The creation of „the eighth province“ (or province of the diaspora) shows how, in this context, Internet could transform the “imagined community” into a virtual reality. The ethnographical view proves to be useful to understand how local practices and discourses can interact with global phenomena: particularly significant is the spreading of archaeogenetic investigations in Euskal Herria, in order to verify the hypothesis of a reproductive isolation of Basque people. Moreover, a big part of local population is using genetic tests proposed online by DNA consulting agencies. It is important to identify how these genetic narratives are absorbed and reused by local populations and if they can reshape the past of a mnemonic community, influencing the representation of its future
