Do the results of infragenual and infracrural bypass surgery justify the perioperative and postoperative complication rates? Risk profiles, morbidity, mortality and lower limb salvage in 156 patients, sub-group analysis for risk patients with Diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency

Background. Infragenual bypass surgery has been proven to enhance the HR Life-Quality for at least 6-12 months. The infragenual vascular region and the morbidity profile of the affected patients are prone to complications. Methods. Access database 01/06-03/07. N = 156 patients. Perioperative 30 days and 1 year (N = 70) postoperative 38 prospective observation units and 18 complication entities. Results. Age 69 years, m:f ratio 2:1., 83% Fontaine III+IV (CLI). D. M. 48% (22% NIDDM, 26% IDDM), 38% renal insufficiency (29% complications, 9% Pat. on dialysis). Conclusion. After 25 days and 1 year, respectively, the infragenual/crural bypass surgery yields presentable results even with morbid patients. Our results advocate an offensive provision of indication even with these patients incl. long-term D.M. a./o. end stage renal disease

Terr(it)or(ies) of Peace? The Congolese Mining Frontier and the Fight Against “Conflict Minerals”

    No full text
This article traces the geography of the “conflict minerals” campaign and its impact on artisanal mining in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region that currently emerges as a pioneer case of traceability and due diligence efforts with regard to the exploitation and trade in tantalum, tungsten and tin. We subsequently analyse the opening and attempted closure of the Congolese resource frontier in the context of recent market reform, and we describe how this process has accompanied a transnational corporate–government nexus bent on monopolising Congo's artisanal 3 T resources. Specifically, we argue how the conflict minerals campaign and its implementation “on the ground” has brought about a harmful, disruptive logic for an artisanal mining sector that is notoriously categorised as unruly, illegal, and informal, but of which upstream stakeholders have in practice been jeopardised by transnational reform. We thus shift the attention from questions on the political economy of “resource wars” towards a deeper understanding of the intersecting spaces of production and regulation that underpin formalisation and traceability of “conflict minerals” in this protracted conflict environment

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Developing DIVE, a design-led futures technique for SMEs

    No full text
Futures techniques have long been used in large enterprises as designerly means to explore the future and guide innovation. In the automotive industry, for instance, the development of concept cars is a technique which has repeatedly proven its value. However, while big companies have broadly embraced futures techniques, small- and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) have lagged behind in applying them, largely because they are too resourceintensive and poorly suited to the SMEs’ needs and idiosyncrasies. To address this issue, we developed DIVE: Design, Innovation, Vision, and Exploration, a design-led futures technique for SMEs. Its development began with an inquiry into concept cars in the automotive industry and concept products and services in other industries. We then combined the insights derived from these design practices with elements of the existing techniques of critical design and design fiction into the creation of DIVE’s preliminary firstversion, which was then applied and evaluated in two iterations with SMEs, resulting in DIVE’s alpha version. After both iterations in context, it seems that DIVE suits the SMEs because of its compact and inexpensive activities which emphasize making and storytelling. Although the results of these activities might be less flashy than concept cars, these simple prototypes and videos help SMEs internalize and share a clear image of a preferable future, commonly known as vision. Developing DIVE thus helped us explore how design cansupport SMEs in envisioning the future in the context of innovation.Accepted author manuscriptDesign Conceptualization and CommunicationProduct Innovatie Managemen
