Heuristic Schelling: economy of organized crime
This article proposes a reading of the armed conflict from an evolutionary design that takes into account the concept of private protection agencies in the works of Schelling. Their aim is to assess the dynamics of conflict and changes from its author's scientific output. A context of conflicts that includes new expressions of violence and the relative failure of the paramilitary reintegration involves using new analytical models (argumentation, game theory and inconsistent information). The recent evolution of emerging gangs and their expansion into areas that were paramilitary camps requires monitoring not only of the government and the authorities, but those investigating the conflict in the present tense. The author provides heuristic research support from Schelling’s theory of strategy, recent contributions to the relationship between organized crime and drug cartels.Colombia, Government, Civil War, Latin America, Security, Protection Agencies.

Dynamic reliability and security monitoring: a virtual machine approach
While one always works to prevent attacks and failures, they are inevitable and situational awareness is key to taking appropriate action. Monitoring plays an integral role in ensuring reliability and security of computing systems. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds significantly lower the barrier for obtaining scalable computing resources and allow users to focus on what is important to them. Can a similar service be offered to provide on-demand reliability and security monitoring?
Cloud computing systems are typically built using virtual machines (VMs). VM monitoring takes advantage of this and uses the hypervisor that runs VMs for robust reliability and security monitoring. The hypervisor provides an environment that is isolated from failures and attacks inside customers’ VMs. Furthermore, as a low-level manager of computing resources, the hypervisor has full access to the infrastructure running above it. Hypervisor-based VM monitoring leverages that information to observe the VMs for failures and attacks. However, existing VM monitoring techniques fall short of “as-a-service” expectations because they require a priori VM modifications and require human interaction to obtain necessary information about the underlying guest system. The research presented in this dissertation closes those gaps by providing a flexible VM monitoring framework and automated analysis to support that framework.
We have developed and tested a dynamic VM monitoring framework called Hypervisor Probes (hprobes). The hprobe framework allows us to monitor the execution of both the guest OS and applications from the hypervisor. To supplement this monitoring framework, we use dynamic analysis techniques to investigate the relationship between hardware events visible to the hyper-visor and OS constructs common across OS versions. We use the results of this analysis to parametrize the hprobe-based monitors without requiring any user input. Combining the dynamic VM monitoring framework and analysis frameworks allows us to provide on-demand hypervisor based monitors for cloud VMs.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-12-01The student, Zachary Estrada, accepted the attached license on 2016-10-10 at 09:21.The student, Zachary Estrada, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-10-13 at 14:06.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-10-17 at 08:32.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10179 on 2017-02-28 at 14:36:04Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-01T16:36:42Z (GMT). Every nonsingular spherical Euclidean distance matrix is a resistance distance matrix
The communicability distance (Estrada (2012) [5]) is a useful metric to characterize alternative navigational routes in graphs. Here we prove that it is the resistance distance between a pair of nodes in a weighted graph. We extend this result and prove that every nonsingular Euclidean distance matrix is the resistance distance matrix of a weighted graph. We briefly analyze some mathematical properties of the communicability Laplacian matrix which emerges from the current analysis. The author thanks anonymous referee for important corrections on the original version. The power to tax
This article describes the argumentative structure of Hayek on the relationship between power to tax and redistribution. It is observed throughout its work giving special attention to two works: The Constitution of Liberty (1959) and Law, Legislation and Liberty, vol3; The Political Order of Free People, 1979) Hayek describes one of the arguments most complete information bout SFP progressive tax systems (progressive tax). According to the author the history of the tax progressive system, works against such a tax model and deploys a variety of arguments in his favorite spot by critics: liberal democracy.Power to Tax, Redistribution, Government, Progressive Tax, Democracy, Hayek

Ensayo y vida. El significado de Montaigne para Ezequiel Martínez Estrada
In his book-length essay on the life and works of Michel of Montaigne, the notable Argentinean essayist Ezequiel Martínez Estrada offered an incisive and beautifully written study on the famous French writer. Martínez Estrada's sympathetic literary portrait of the author of the Essays constitutes no only a kind of intellectual self-portrait of Martínez Estrada himself but also a deep reflection on the nature of the genera of the essay, of which the famous author of X-Ray of The Pampa was an accomplished artist. In this article both intertwined aspects are commented: Martínez Estrada personal identification with the individual Montaigne and his reflections on the scope and aims of essay-writing. Martínez Estrada linked the authenticity of the essay-writing, but of literature in general with its capacity to fully reflect life's richness, and, above all, 'people's' life.
Abstract P1-04-02: Improving immunotherapy response by epigenetic modulation
Abstract
The presence of predicted neo-antigens in any given tumor is highly correlated with total somatic mutational burden of the same tumor genome. However, many potential neo-antigens are never transcribed, translated, or presented as antigens, partially because they lie in regions of the genome that are transcriptionally-repressed by cytosine methylation of promoter-CpG islands. Treatment with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors (DNMTi) can hypothetically lead to re-expression of many potential neo-antigens. Furthermore, the presence of neo-antigens have been linked to immunotherapy outcomes in patients. Our hypothesis is that tumors with reduced mutational burden can be maximized for neo-antigen presentation by activating transcription and translation of these sequences through DNMTi treatment. Our preliminary results showed that the DNMTi guadecitabine (SGI-110), a second-generation hypomethylating agent, treatment decreases methyl-cytosine in genomic DNA both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, SGI-110 treatment enhances MHC-II expression on murine mammary carcinoma MMTV-Neu cells upon IFN-γ stimulation in vitro and increases T-cell infiltration in vivo. Currently, we are performing whole-exome-sequencing and RNA-sequencing to track somatic mutations from DNA to RNA. We will further track somatic mutations from RNA→ MHC-presented peptide sequences using MHC immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectroscopy analysis. In addition, we will explore the role of guadecitabine therapeutic priming on response to αPD-L1 immunotherapy. These studies will provide a pre-clinical data to evaluate the potential for combined epigenetic and immune-therapy in a clinical trial for breast cancer.
