    Franco Minissi: musei e restauri : la trasparenza come valore

    Anche solo l'ampiezza della produzione dell'architetto Franco Minissi (1919-1996) basterebbe a motivare una ragionata disamina delle opere, sia per rimuovere la patina di oblio che purtroppo sembra ricoprire il suo lavoro, sia per rispetto di un'epoca, il secondo dopoguerra italiano, che ha offerto spunti preziosi e realizzazioni di alta qualità. La critica architettonica ha esaltato le figure di Giovanni Michelucci, Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini, Mario Ridolfi, Ignazio Gardella, mentre ha troppo spesso accostato Franco Minissi alla sola protezione dei siti archeologici. «Ho molto apprezzato il titolo di questo libro: trasparenza come valore. E non è solo una trasparenza che allude ai materiali prediletti da Minissi, ma è una trasparenza che diventa nell’opera di Minissi quasi una categoria dello spirito, un modo di vedere le cose, di inquadrarle e guardarci attraverso, mediante l’organizzazione degli oggetti nei musei, degli stessi musei, dei monumenti nel loro contesto...». Con queste parole la studiosa Licia Vlad Borrelli coglie l’essenza dell’impostazione progettuale sottolineata dal volume. La rilettura critica delle sperimentazioni di Gela, Eraclea Minoa, Piazza Armerina, assieme alle realizzazioni di Villa Giulia, del Museo di Agrigento o dell'Auditorium del SS. Salvatore di Palermo, può far conoscere la coerenza concettuale di questo architetto, particolarmente attento al connubio fra esigenze del presente e conservazione delle antichità, a qualsiasi scala. È un dialogo col passato, il suo, rivolto al massimo coinvolgimento della cittadinanza e affinato da una sensibilità di museografo, che emerge nella propensione verso flessibilità e reversibilità dell'intervento (in sintonia coi principi del restauro critico), lasciando ai posteri la possibilità di rimuovere le aggiunte senza offesa del monumento, di fronte a nuove esigenze e interpretazioni. Gli aggiornamenti museografici delle ultime decadi, però, minacciano di eliminare ogni traccia di un modus operandi che può ancora offrire valide riflessioni: una leggerezza di accostamento e una ricerca di trasparenza per niente casuali, bensì fondate sulla consapevolezza storica di un progettista che, per dirla con parole di Cesare Brandi, è riuscito ad essere "ad un tempo ossequioso dell'antico e assertore del moderno".The Italian historiography of late 20th-century architecture has revalue figures like Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini and others, for the dialectic qualities of their work on ancient structures. Franco Minissi is known instead for the protection of archaeological sites, and also for the controversy about his use of innovative materials, but the breadth of his planning production is not well known: hundreds of museums, not only in Italy, restorations, archaeology parks, redevelopments of historic centres, new buildings, interior decorating projects, shops and temporary exhibitions. "I very much enjoyed the title of this book: transparency as a value. It is not only a transparency that alludes to favorite materials from Minissi, but it is also a work of Minissi transparency that becomes almost a category of the spirit, a way of seeing things, to frame and look through, through the organization of objects in museums, some of the museums, monuments in their context...". With these words the scholar Licia Vlad Borrelli captures the essence of the design criteria underlined by the book. The reading of Minissi’s architectural works alongside his experiments on archaeological sites brings to the fore Minissi’s conceptual congruence in attempting to meet the needs of the present and the preservation of antiquities, at any scale. His dialogue with the past was aimed at maximum involvement of citizens and it was refined by the sensitivity of a museum designer and intended for a reversibility of the operation (in line with the principles of critical restoration), placing him among the key figures of the origins of critical restoration and offering valid ideas for the new generations. Updates museological of the last decades, however, threaten to remove all traces of a modus operandi that can still offer valid reflections: a lightweight approach and a search for transparency at all random, but based on the historical consciousness of a designer who, to put it with words of Cesare Brandi, managed to be "at the same time respectful of the ancient and supporter of the modern.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Bending analysis with Galerkin method of rectilinear orthotropic composite circular plates subject to transversal load

    A theoretical analysis of linear elastic behavior of the rectilinear orthotropic composite annular plate undergoing external loads orthogonal with respect to its mid-surface is presented. The annular plate is made of fiber-reinforced layers with rectilinearly oriented fibers. Different stacking sequences, taken from constructive practice, have been considered. An original approach is presented combining the bending plate theory for composite materials, in order to analytically define the governing equations, with the use of Galerkin solution method. This paper represents the first step for the definition of a Spot Joint Element for spot junctions, such as bolts, rivets or generic pins, applied to a composite plate. In this order of ideas, displacement constraints involving clamped outer radius and rigid core at the inner radius, deriving from the theoretical reference model of Spot Joint Element, are taken into account. The expressions of the approximation functions are derived from constraints conditions and depicted in a general formulation. Results for different typologies of composite laminate plates are shown and compared to results derived from FEA performed with a refined reference model

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Analysis of multi-bolt composite joints with a user-defined finite element for the evaluation of load distribution and secondary bending

    The present paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities of the Composite Bolted Joint Element (CBJE) methodology in the framework of single-lap multi-bolt joints analysis. This FE modeling approach exploits the CBJE, a user-defined finite element. It is founded on the complete elastic characterization of the bolted region through analytical models. The elastic behavior of a circular portion of the laminates enclosing the bolt is determined in the context of thick composite plate mechanics; a set of radial beam elements is made structurally equivalent through the custom definition of their stiffness matrix. The interaction between the bolt and the plates is modeled as a beam on elastic foundation. The stiffness contributions of the bolt and the specific properties of the joint, such as preload, bolt-hole clearance, contact stiffness, and friction effects are simulated utilizing an assembly of beam and spring elements. In this way, it is created a FE model from the theoretical solution of the bolted region featuring high fidelity and computational efficiency, as it requires a low amount of degrees of freedom. Experimental data are used to validate the FE model with CBJE of the single-lap three-bolt composite joint. Specimens with varying lay-up, radial clearances, bolts preload and bolt number are also analyzed to evaluate the bolt load distribution and out-of-plane behavior. The CBJE results are successfully compared with those of reference solid models

    First-order shear deformation analysis of rectilinear orthotropic composite circular plates undergoing transversal loads

    This work outlines the elastic bending analysis of transversely loaded shear-deformable rectilinear orthotropic composite annular plates. The load condition discussed in the paper, along with the displacement constraints, are derived by the composite bolted joints theoretical reference model – this analytical solution is a necessary effort for the obtainment of a custom finite element capable of simulating this kind of joints with high accuracy and limited computational effort. Firstly, the constitutive equations of the family of plate under investigation are obtained in the framework of the First-order Shear Deformation Plate Theory. The described methodology is founded on the application of the virtual displacements principle and its solution is performed according to Ritz method after the writing of displacement field approximation functions fulfilling the boundary conditions. The three unknown displacement components are obtained for different case studies concerning rectilinear orthotropic composite annular plates featuring various slenderness ratios, shape factors and stacking sequences. The outcomes comparison with FE numerical solutions evidences a high degree of fidelity. The presented results demonstrate that this enhanced version of the Ritz analytical solution method, which accounts for the composite plate shear deformability, can be more effectively employed to describe the displacement field of composite plates connected by a bolted joint in the area surrounding the bolt
