    Methods for variable selection in LiDAR-assisted forest inventories

    Estimation of wood volume and biomass is an important assignment of any National Forest Inventory. However, the estimation process is often expensive, laborious and sometimes imprecise because of small sample sizes relative to populationvariability. Remote sensing techniques are an option to assist in surveying large areas by providing data that can be related to the forest attribute of interest through mathematical models of relationships. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a technology that can provide data that are closely related to forest wood volume and biomass. With these data, linear regression is often used to estimate forest attributes. If the relationship provides evidence of nonlinearity, a transformation in the variables can be considered. However, modern computation allows fitting nonlinear regression models without transformations of the variables. Nonlinear least squares (NLS) techniques also give more freedom to assure satisfaction of natural conditions such as non-negativity and/or lower and upper asymptotes. Like any estimation technique, NLS is subject to overfitting when using a large number of predictor variables. Because NLS is more computationally intensive than linear regression, stepwise selection techniques may require considerable programming effort. We compared three methods to select predictor variables for nonlinear models of relationships between forest attributes and LiDAR metrics, two of them based on genetic algorithms (GAs) and one based on random forest (RM). GAs were implemented to optimize a cost function that yields root mean square error or the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), while RM was based on variable importance in decision trees. A model with the predictor variable most correlated with the response variable was also considered. We compared the results of overall estimation for two datasets using the model-assisted, generalized regression estimator and concluded that the combination of GAs and AIC was the most efficient and stable procedure for selection of variables.We attribute this result to the penalty that AIC applies to models with large numbers of variables,which leads to a more efficient model with a minimum loss of information

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Multi-year, post-harvesting impact assessment in a neotropical secondary Atlantic Forest

    Subject to overexploitation in the past centuries, the Atlantic Forest is subject to very rigorous protection rules. However, the law is a controversial issue since landowners are not compensated for the limited choice of land use possibilities. We believe that, alternatively to a general timber harvest ban, sustainable forest management of the Atlantic Forest has the potential to generate income for the landowners while sustaining important ecological functions of the forest. Such choice would require better understanding of the potential effects of timber harvesting on the forest ecosystem and on species composition and succession over time. In this context, we assessed the harvesting impact of a conventional harvesting method (CM) and compared it to an alternative harvesting method (AM) in three different stands (stands A, B and C) of a secondary forest fragment in southern Brazil. Results from three comprehensive forest inventories over a period of two years were used to assess the timber harvesting impact. Measurements of species composition (i.e., number of species, life form, ecological group), forest structure (i.e., density, basal area, DBH, volume) and saplings density formed the basis of the impact assessment. The inventories were carried out before, immediately after and two years after harvesting. Intensities of damage on remnant trees immediately after harvesting and two years after harvesting were also measured. Before harvesting, a total of 114 tree species (trees, tree fern and palm tree) belonging to 49 families were identified in the study site’s three research stands. Palm trees and secondary species, such as Euterpe edulis, represented the majority of recruited individuals (DBH ≥ 5 cm) two years after harvesting. However, new saplings (DBH ≤ 5 cm) after two years were mainly pioneer woody tree species, such as Cecropia glaziovii and Schizolobium parahyba. On average, AM reduced damage to saplings by 5%. Most of the damages caused by CM were moderate to severe, while AM caused light to moderate damages. Binary logistic regression indicated dependency of the mortality rates on the independent variables “stand, stem and leaning damages.” On the other hand, the recovery rates of damaged trees were dependent on crown, stem and leaning damages. Therefore, two years after harvesting a higher mortality rate of low-dimensional trees was observed in stands with high density of smaller trees and high density of improvement felling.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
