Web-sharing for a cultural heritage computer database of Central Sicilian monuments
Paintings, etchings and lithographs are a way of documenting and journeying into the past. One of the most important values of pictures, though often neglected, is that they are an inexhaustible source of knowledge both for architectural historians and for architect restorers. They contain a lot of important data and this information can be an extremely useful aid to understanding cultural heritage in urban and historic sites. The lithographic prints made by Grand Tour travellers (even allowing for the possible subjectivity of the artist’s interpretation), the guides, the albums and the collections of images especially created to increase the aesthetic and cultural values of private libraries, provide an iconographic description (and at the same time a catalogue) of an architectural heritage and landscape that are not always recognizable today. Photography later supplemented and developed this documentary role of paintings, although it did not completely overcome the constraints arising from the personal vision of the photographer. With the advent of social networks, the role of photography, once restricted by the local diffusion environment and limited by the heaviness of paper, crossed many of its borders. Tools for sharing photo albums like Flickr, Facebook, Picasa, etc., allowing people almost instantly to share photos taken anywhere in the world, fulfill an essential function of "reality” documentation. This "random” material is a public catalogue, easily accessible and continuously updated, even if still limited to the status of mere “image”. Nowadays, the new generation of laser scanners, ever smaller and lighter and equipped with integrated coaxial cameras, can deliver accurate measurements of architectural structures and their environment, in a very short time. These instruments can provide point clouds that are in reality 3D photographs, from which a wide range of information can be extracted and they can create 3D models to be published on the Web for cataloguing and archival purposes. In particular, the FARO SCENE 4.8, the latest version of the scan processing software for the FARO Laser Scanner, incorporates the specific one-click WebShare function. This application makes it possible to publish scanned data on the Internet, thus enabling everyone to share images, including metric, technical and material property information. Unlike photographs, which deliver only the image of the monument, the 3D model can be sliced in order to obtain cross-sections and plans; it can be examined and processed to give orthophotos; finally it can yield data which is useful for understanding the chemical and physical properties of the artifact. Unlike images, however, the model obtained from a point cloud is an incredible database, a kind of "solid" photograph which allows the material state of an architectural object to be “penetrated”. This paper aims to address the issue of the new frontier represented by laser scanning methodology and its usefulness in the field of documenting cultural goods, starting from the objectives (and showing the first results) of a wide-ranging project of Web-documentation of the cultural heritage of Central Sicily
The drawing of the sulphur landscape in Sicily: the mining site of Floristella-Grottacalda
The ‘solfare’, the ancient sulphur mines in Sicily, are emblematic examples of an anthropized territory that still today ‘lives’ in the heart of the island. Characterized by simple architectures and small engineering works, they constitute a scenario of rare beauty, which tells about an important chapter of the Sicilian history. Places described by the travellers of the Grand Tour, by the writers of the 20th century and narrated through images by numerous feature films and documentaries, more in the intangibility of the suffering of the miners than as significant structures of the region. Among them, the Floristella-Grottacalda mining complex, located in the province of Enna, is one of the most expressive examples of industrial archaeology in Southern Italy. Its glorious past is today witnessed by the ruins of the abandoned plants and of the workers’ villages, only minimally reused. The essay wants to propose some of the results of a research that, started in 2012, is aimed at retracing the intricate events of formation and transformation of both the landscape and the urban-productive environment of the ancient site. An archival-bibliographic investigation, which combined with the survey and the graphic representation, is finalised to the knowledge and enhancement of the cultural, archaeological, industrial and environmental landscape, with the purpose of preserving knowledge and memory, as well as suggesting some recovery, restoration, reuse and enhancement hypotheses. The preservation of Floristella-Grottacalda is intended as an operation finalized at re-evoking its potential and the meanings lost today but which constitute the roots of the local community. In this sense, the knowledge process can be considered a basic prerequisite on which to build a conscientious regeneration project to create a concrete, liveable and explorable place of memory through a series of punctual operations able to reconnect the network of spread industrial monuments within a circuit of physical enjoyment in which the industrial landscape could be again the protagonist
In the 1980s, the Laboratories of Belice were a place of experimentation and validation of the compositional proposals of Italian architecture. Since then, the issues related to the approach followed have been very much discussed, especially those related to urban planning strategies established for the new town of Gibellina. However, the aspects related to the conservation and restoration project, on which this experience should have been founded, have not been treated yet, with the same care. Actually, followed the 1968 earthquake, the architects intervened in many ways on the surviving built heritage, stressing on formal and symbolical aspects, often forcing principles already consolidated in the Restoration Charters, or perhaps paying little attention to the architectural durability over time. For their different approach to memory and for the results in terms of ageing and material decay, the experiences carried out in Gibellina by Alberto Burri with the edification of the Cretto, by Ludovico Quaroni with the construction of the Chiesa Madre, by Francesco Venezia, Franco Purini and Laura Thermes, etc. need to be analyzed. In this sense, this paper aims to discuss the choices made in such examples of monumentality - almost contemporary archaeological sites - and their consequences in terms of functionality, structural behavior and maintenance needs, comparing them with other examples in which the conservation of the ruin coincides with the wish to preserve the memory of a natural (or intentional) destructive act
Messina’s history is marked by severe destructions that have compromised its urban legibility. Modern architectural language appears in the city after the First World War through the competition for the Nuova Palazzata that will be won by the Sicilian architects and engineers: Autore, Leone, Samonà and Viola. However, the winner project will never be realized and further changes will be made after the Second World War. Almost 100 years after the famous contest, little remains of the original idea. Urban plans conceived in the 80’s, not really careful and respectful of history, inappropriate harbor works and the recent construction of the tramway, have definitely lowered this important part of the city which buildings are today in a very serious state of deterioration. This paper aims, therefore, at highlighting the main stages of design evolution and realization of this important example of modern architecture, proposing a reflection about its future
On the safeguarding of sites and historic cities: a study on the evolution of French legal system
France has classically been tied to the idea of protection of cultural heritage, so much so that the birth of the concept of European cultural heritage can be traced back to its 19th-century vision of patrimoine. In addition, it has developed, over time, a regulatory apparatus of the most complete, especially in relation to protected areas. From the law of 1913 on historic monuments to that on natural sites of 1930, from the extension of protection to the surroundings of monuments introduced in 1943 to the creation in 1962 of secteurs sauvegardés and then of the zones de protection du patrimoine architectural urbain et paysager (today AVAP), France has been able to organize a legal system of proven effectiveness. In a spirit of a necessary conceptual and operational maturation, with the new Loi Patrimoine, France intends today to reorganize the field, according to a comprehensive and integrated approach, founded on the knowledge, communication and shared decision making, really aimed at the transmission of heritage to future generations. The primary objective is to meet the new demands posed by a sustainable development of the territory while responding to essential questions: why do we need to safeguard? How to reconcile conservation and innovation? Which are the economic, social and cultural benefits that may result from a conscious and conscientious exploitation of cultural heritage
