Award date: 6 December 2022; Supervisor : Professor Sarah Nouwen, (European University Institute)It is an unspoken assumption that international law and its institutional practice contribute to peace. However, the questions of „what“, regarding the meaning of peace, and the question of „who“, regarding the actors shaping the meaning, have been seldom discussed, despite significant developments in international relations literature. This thesis aims to address these questions by analyzing debates on peace in Afghanistan and examining peace in international relations theory. Presenting eight conceptions of "peace in Afghanistan", the study argues that peace possesses a diverse range of seemingly infinite meanings. Moreover, it contends that the meaning of peace is socially constructed by the respective parties to the conflict, rendering it a relational and thus relative phenomenon. Building upon these findings, the paper reflects on the implications for international legal (political) practice. Firstly, it is argued that an awareness of the plurality of meanings of peace can aid international lawyers in opening limited preconceptions of peace in the service of proper interpretation and identification of (customary) international law. Secondly, it is argued that respecting the meaning-making authority of parties to the conflict should encourage a practice of institutional restraint in shaping the discourse on the meaning of peace. This is because prioritizing an understanding of the conflicting parties' perspectives on their peace fosters better cooperation between institutions and the conflicting parties

Skapandi ferli getur af sér margþætt efni auk lokaafurðar sem ýmist telst til listrænnar rannsóknar, hugmyndavinnu, skissugerðar, mótunar stefnuyfirlýsinga og yfirlýsinga listamanna. Þessir angar mismunandi skrifa úr sköpunarferli listamanna veita innsýn í það efni sem ritstjóri á sviði dans- og gjörningalistar þarf að hafa þekkingu á til þess að geta gegnt hlutverki sínu; að velja inn höfunda og listamenn til umfjöllunar jafnt sem að móta þemu og efnistök sem eru í samhengi við það sem er að gerast innan listasenunnar hverju sinni. Ritstjóri innan listgreina þarf að vera í góðu samtali við höfund þannig að textinn styðji við merkingarsköpun verksins. Eftirfarandi ritgerð er unnin út frá ritstjórnar- og útgáfuferlinu á tímaritinu Dunce sem ég ritstýrði og gaf út í desember 2020 í stamstarfi við Prent & vini. Markmiðið var að skapa nýjan umræðuvettvang fyrir dans- og gjörningalistir á Íslandi með það í huga að hafa umhverfissjónarmið í forgrunni, einblína á sköpunarferlið og að vinna efni blaðsins í samtali við listamenn sem starfa á fagvettvanginum þannig að efnið endurspegli og veiti greinargóða innsýn í starfsemi senunnar. The creative process generates a variety of material alongside the final product. This can be in the form of artistic research, concept development, sketches, scores, manifestos and artist statements. These various strands that stem from the creative process of an artist give insight into the material that an editor in the field of dance and performance art is required to be familiar with. An editor within the arts needs to be in close conversation with the author so that the text supports the conceptual basis of the artwork. The following thesis centers around the editing and publishing process of Dunce magazine that I edited and published in December 2020 in collaboration with Print & Friends. The aim was to create a new forum of discussion for dance and performance art in Iceland emphasizing a sustainable approach to publishing, focusing on the creative process and to gather material in direct conversation with working artists in the professional field so that the material reflects and represents the scene
