    Despite the consistent reduction in the incidence of stroke and coronary events demonstrated in numerous clinical trials in young and elderly hypertensive subjects, the use of diuretics has declined as a first-line therapy in hypertension. The metabolic dose-dependent side effects and the increasing availability of new drugs appear the two main reasons for the decline. Although the neutral metabolic effects and the perception of a more physiological approach to hypertension has been advocated with the newer agents, no definite proof has been reported on the long-term effects on cardiovascular end-points. Many of adverse effects of diuretics can be limited by the use of low doses. For this reason, as well as their efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, diuretics should remain a first-line therapy for hypertensive patients

    A numerical approach for the modelling of forming limits in hot incremental forming of AZ31 magnesium alloy

    Magnesium alloys, because of their good specific material strength, can be considered attractive by different industry fields, as the aerospace and the automotive one. However, their use is limited by the poor formability at room temperature. In this research, a numerical approach is proposed in order to determine an analytical expression of material formability in hot incremental forming processes. The numerical model was developed using the commercial software ABAQUS/Explicit. The Johnson-Cook material model was used, and the model was validated through experimental measurements carried out using the ARAMIS system. Different geometries were considered with temperature varying in a range of 25–400 °C and wall angle in a range of 35–60°. An analytical expression of the fracture forming limit, as a function of temperature, was established and finally tested with a different geometry in order to assess the validity

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Humoral and haemodynamic interactions between clonidine and nifedipine in human essential hypertension.

    Acute administration of nifedipine (NIF), a calcium entry blocker (CEB), in animals reduces the hypotensive effect of clonidine (CLN), an alpha-adrenergic agonist. In order to evaluate possible negative interactions between NIF and CLN in man during chronic treatment with these drugs, 12 patients with mild to moderate uncomplicated essential hypertension received either NIF (20 mg twice daily), CLN (0.25 mg once daily), the two drugs together at the same doses, or their matched placebos for a 2-week period each. NIF (-13.5% versus placebo) and CLN (-10.2% versus placebo) decreased blood pressure significantly and when combined, blood pressure was further decreased (-17.1% versus placebo). Heart rate was increased by NIF and NIF + CLN but unchanged by CLN alone. Plasma renin activity (PRA) tended to increase with NIF, decreased with CLN (P < 0.05) and was unchanged with NIF + CLN. Plasma aldosterone did not vary during any of the phases of the trial. These results indicate that NIF and CLN do not interact negatively on blood pressure control in essential hypertensive subjects

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
