Biometrics measurements in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in the Picentini area. Part I: intersexual differences between young adult and adult subjects.
A series of biometrics measurements have been obtained in 16 Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) duly hunted in the Picentini area, outside the protected area. Data recorded included the sex, bodyweight, and age class (young adults 2 y.o.) as determined on tooth wearing by an experienced wildlife operator. Occipito-coccygeal (OC), nasal-occipitalis (NO), tail and total lengths, wither height, ear and hind foot (HF) length, upper and lower canine length and width (UCL, LCL, UCW, LCW) and carnassial length and width (data not shown), were measured directly on the carcasses. Condilo-basal (CB), hard palate (HP), scapular, mandibular and upper dentition (UD) lengths, inter-carnassial (IC) and zygomatic (Z) width were measured on latero-lateral and ventro-dorsal radiograms.
A Wilcoxon sum rank test was applied to compare variables not normally distributed. For normally distributed variables, homoscedasticity was investigated by using a Levene’s test, post hoc a Student’s t test or a Welch ANOVA was applied. Significance was set at P<0.05. Results are summarized in table 1

Settling of finite-size particles in isotropically forced, homogeneous turbulence: interface-resolved simulations
We have simulated the gravity-induced settling of finite-size particles in a turbulent background flow which is forced in a statistically-stationary fashion. The simulations are accurately resolving the solid-fluid interface with the aid of an immersed boundary technique [1]. The parameters of the simulation are (apart from background turbulence) identical to those of reference [2], where particle clustering was observed at a Galileo number of 178 and a solid volume fraction of 0.005. In the present case, it is found that a relative turbulence intensity of 0.24 leads to the disappearance of the clusters; as a consequence, the increase in average particle settling velocity found in [2] also vanishes. Provisional T-drug-eluting stenting technique for the treatment of bifurcation lesions: Clinical, myocardial scintigraphy and (late) coronary angiographic results
BACKGROUND: Treatment of bifurcation stenoses (BS) by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains challenging, even with drug-eluting stents (DES). We aimed to appraise clinical, myocardial scintigraphy and late (>9 months) exploratory angiographic outcomes of provisional T-stenting in the management of BS. METHODS: We enrolled 53 consecutive patients with BS in the proximity of a ≥2 mm side branch (SB). The provisional T-technique was performed in all cases, with implantation of DES in the main branch (MB), SB balloon-only dilatation, and final kissing in the event of >50% SB stenosis. Provisional SB-stenting (using another DES) was reserved to cases with persisting >50% stenosis/dissection and reduced TIMI flow. Further kissing inflation was recommended in such patients. Stress/rest single-photon emission computed tomography (MIBI) and coronary angiography follow up were scheduled >6 and 9 months after PCI, respectively. RESULTS: Major adverse cardiac events at 14 ± 3 months occurred in 5 patients (9.4% [95% confidence interval 0.1 - 17.4%): 1 (1.9% [0.1 - 5.8%]) non-Q-wave myocardial infarction for subacute stent thrombosis, 2 (3.8% [0.1 - 9.0%]) target lesion revascularizations and 2 (3.8% [0.1 - 9.0%]) target vessel revascularizations. Six-month MIBI was performed in 51 patients (96.3%): 4 patients had positive results (7.8% [0.2 - 15.4%]). Angiography was performed in 4 of these patients and in another 27 patients, with clinical restenosis occurring overall in only 5 (16.1% [8.9 - 23.3%]), 1 case of clinical restenosis in the MB (3.2% [0.6 - 9.4%]), and 4 in the SB (12.9% [5.1 - 24.9%]). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests the safety and efficacy of provisional T-drug-eluting stent implantation in bifurcation coronary lesions, and supports the use of follow-up myocardial scintigraphy, with angiography reserved for selected patients and lesions
Mesophilic-hydrothermal-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion of green corn straw
Mesophilic-hydrothermal (80-160 degrees C, 30 min)-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion and control tests of mesophilic (M), thermophilic (T), hydrothermal-mesophilic (H-M), and mesophilic-thermophilic digestion (M-T) of green corn straw were conducted for a 20-day fermentation period. The results indicate that M-H-T is an efficient method to improve methane production. A maximum methane yield of 371.74 mL/g volatile solid was obtained by the M (3 days)-H (140 degrees C)-T (17 days) process, which was 20.44%, 16.55%, 31.44%, and 14.31% higher than the yields of the M, T, 140-M, and M-T processes. The enhanced methane production was attributed to (1) the improved hemicellulose degradation and lignin disorganization; (2) prevention of the degradation of soluble sugar, easily hydrolyzed hemicellulose and cellulose into furfural and methylfurfural; and (3) lack of formation of Maillard reaction products during initial hydrothermal treatment.
