Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
PROCESO DE RENOVACIÓN URBANA EN EL CENTRO HISTÓRICO DE LA CIUDAD DE TOLUCA DE LERDO, 2000-2018
Get PDFThe research analyzes the factors of the urban renewal process in the Historic Center of the City of Toluca, in the period 2000 - 2018. The methodology was based on the spatial and structural approach, consisted of theoretical reflection and contact with the facts, bibliographic, statistical and cartographic sources, semi-structured interviews and exploratory tours, qualitative and quantitative procedures, the analysis includes the description and characterization of the relationship between study variables. The results affirm that urban renewal is a discontinuous, choppy and localized process that territorializes the vision and economic policies of local governments of different party affiliation. Local governments intend to solve the urban crisis through projects based on the historical-cultural-architectural value of the central polygon, mostly destined for the rehabilitation, restoration and minor construction, these projects act as catalysts for the reactivation of the sites intervened through new uses and commercial functions and consumer services, which enhances the flow of visitors and benefits the agents of commercial. The Plaza El Molino complex announces the emergence of a new urban anchorage that materializes a management mode in accordance with the trends of the new urbanism, association of the public and private sectors, high intensity of capital investment, high-rise residential construction, commercial activities and of next-generation services. However, the immediacy of the breakdown of the preceding urban morphology and the substitution of supply activities for diverse consumption activities. The “Plaza el Molino” business project will have a low multiplier impact in strengthening urban competitiveness and social cohesion, due to the absence of management instruments that direct urban urbanization. The research contributes knowledge about a sparsely covered urban topic, provides an analytical framework that feeds back research questions to evaluate the ongoing urban renewal process. It documents as an unprecedented phenomenon for the center of the city of Toluca, the emergence of the model of intensive urban renewal in investment and land use. It establishes lines of work around the relationship dynamics of local governments and private agents of real estate capital, the revaluation of urban land, the effects on the local economy and on urban and social structures, in particular social change. These issues are open due to the incipient nature of the process.La investigación analiza los factores del proceso de renovación urbana en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Toluca, en el período 2000 – 2018. La metodología se basó en el enfoque espacial y estructural, consistió en la reflexión teórica y el contacto con los hechos, fuentes bibliográficas, estadísticas, cartográficas, entrevistas semi estructuradas y recorridos exploratorios, procedimientos cualitativos y cuantitativos, el análisis comprende la descripción y caracterización de la relación entre variables de estudio. Los resultados afirman que la renovación urbana es un proceso discontinuo, entrecortado y localizado que territorializa la visión y las políticas económicas de los gobiernos locales de filiación partidista distinta. Los gobiernos locales pretenden resolver la crisis urbana a través de proyectos fundados en el valor histórico– cultural- arquitectónico del polígono central destinados en su mayoría a la rehabilitación, la restauración y la construcción menor, estos proyectos fungen como catalizadores de la reactivación de los sitios intervenidos por medio de nuevos usos y funciones comerciales y servicios de consumo, lo que potencia el flujo de visitantes y beneficia a los agentes del capital comercial. El conjunto Plaza El Molino anuncia la emergencia de un nuevo anclaje urbano que materializa un modo de gestión acorde con las tendencias del nuevo urbanismo, asociación de los sectores público y privado, alta intensidad de inversión de capital, edificación habitacional en altura, actividades comerciales y de servicios de nueva generación. No obstante, la inmediatez de la ruptura de la morfología urbana precedente y la sustitución de actividades de abasto, por actividades de consumo diverso. El proyecto empresarial “Plaza el Molino” tendrá bajo impacto multiplicador en el fortalecimiento de la competitividad urbana y la cohesión social, debido a la ausencia de instrumentos de gestión que direccionen la urbanización de lo urbano. La investigación aporta conocimiento sobre un tema urbano escasamente tratado, proporciona un marco analítico que retroalimenta preguntas de investigación para evaluar el proceso de renovación urbana en curso. Documenta como fenómeno inédito para el centro de la ciudad de Toluca, la emergencia del modelo de renovación urbana intensiva en inversión y uso de suelo. Establece líneas de trabajo entorno a las dinámicas de relacionamiento de los gobiernos locales y los agentes privados del capital inmobiliario, la revalorización del suelo urbano, los efectos en la economía local y en las estructuras urbana y social, en particular el recambió social. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
