    No full text

    No full text
From the transnational success of Baby (Andrea De Sica, 2008-2012), popular media have described Alice Pagani, co-star of the television series, as the symbol of a new generation of Italian actresses. In just a few years, her charismatic image has been associated with major luxury brands such as Giorgio Armani. This essay analyzes the Instagram profile of celebrity, influencer and fashion icon Alice Pagani, in order to highlight how she managed to stage her latest incarnation as an “unfiltered” beauty, in the renewed pandemic framework. The essay will analyze the impact that the health emergency linked to Covid-19 has had on the metamorphosis of its public image and authentication practices, from a gender point of view. In particular, the essay will closely examine her active participation in a new photographic genre that emerged from the pandemic, which was then widely copied: the home fashion editorial via FaceTime

TCP fluid modeling with a variable capacity bottleneck link

    No full text
A single TCP connection with a time varying capacity bottleneck link is considered. The bottleneck capacity varies arbitrarily and independently of the TCP connection traffic; it aims at reproducing typical situations where capacity is modulated by exogenous process, such as wireless channel with link adaptation or bursty channels. The key point is to understand the interplay of the TCP congestion control evolution and the time constants of the bottleneck link capacity time variation. Fluid modeling is used to describe the time evolution of the congestion window size and of the bottleneck buffer content with a completely general capacity time function, ns-2 based simulations are used as mean to assess the fluid model accuracy. Numerical results show the existence of a "resonance" phenomena, that can significantly degrade the TCP long term performance (even more than halved). The degradation depends on the ratio between the fundamental time constant of the link capacity variation and the TCP average round trip time. © 2007 IEEE

End-to-end evaluation of WWW and file transfer performance for UMTS-TDD

    No full text
Wireless data is deemed as a major booster of next generation wireless networks. In this context, the support of Inter-net applications based-on the TCP still presents several open issues. The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of TCP data transfer over the UMTS TD-CDMA air interface, by means of a rather detailed simulation model. The evaluation includes both bulk FTP like data transfer and interactive client-server (WWW) traffic. The distinctive point of view is exploring the interaction between application and transport level protocol functions and lower layers protocols over the radio interface. The interplay of radio access and fixed core network impairments is analyzed as well. Major results deal with balancing the error recovery performance of the RLC against the radio channel correlation and the fixed network impairments

Experimental Analysis of TCP and UDP Traffic Performance over Infra-structured 802.11b WLANs

    No full text
In this paper we present the results of experiments carried out in an infra-structured 802.11b WLAN comprising a single Access Point (AP) and a number of user terminals. The aim of this work is twofold: by the one hand, we validate well-known ¿TCP (UDP) over 802.11¿ analytic models by means of experimental results; by the other hand, we focus our analysis on TCP behavior over 802.11b. We present results about flow fairness, about interaction between WLAN link layer parameters (ARQ) and transport protocols and about TCP flows traffic characteristics. With respect to earlier related works, an added value of our analysis is given by a more accurate knowledge and control of key parameters that highly affect the system performance (e.g., mobile station transmission bitrate, maximum number of retransmission attempts, TCP version, etc.) that guarantees the reliability of numerical results. This is a key issue in order to confidently explain observed experimental phenomena

Optimal design of hybrid FEC/ARQ schemes for TCP over wireless links with Rayleigh fading

    No full text
In this paper, we investigate interactions between TCP and wireless hybrid FEC/ARQ schemes. The aim is to understand what is the best configuration of the wireless link protocol in order to guarantee TCP performance and channel efficiency. Interactions between TCP and different link layer mechanisms are evaluated by means of an analytic model that reproduces: 1) a Rayleigh fading channel with FEC coding, 2) a generic selective repeat ARQ Protocol, and 3) the TCP behavior in a wired-cum-wireless network scenario. The analytic model is validated by means of ns-based simulations. The analysis represents a contribution to the optimal design of link layer parameters of wireless networks crossed by TCP/IP traffic. The main findings can be summarized as follows: 1) fully reliable ARQ protocols are the best choice for both TCP performance and wireless link efficiency and 2) optimal values of FEC redundancy degree from the point of view of energy efficiency maximizes TCP performance as well

An analytical approach to characterize the service process and the tradeoff between throughput and service time burstiness in IEEE 802.11 DCF

    No full text
We derive a complete characterization (marginal distribution, autocovariance) of the service time process in a saturated IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN, both from the point of view of a single station and of the system as a whole. Our service time distribution model is then exploited to highlight the burstiness of service times and its dependence on the maximum value of the IEEE 802.11 contention window. We discuss a trade-off between throughput efficiency and service time variance, showing that a minor throughput loss can bring about a major benefit in service time smoothness, at least for practical values of the number of simultaneously competing stations (e.g.\ less than 15)

Characterization of service times burstiness of IEEE 802.11 DCF

    No full text
First order metrics (throughput, average delay) of the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol have been extensively analyzed. The service process of the same protocol has not received the same attention, although it is known that it might be bursty. We develop a simple and accurate Markov model that allows a complete characterization of the service process of an 802.11 BSS. A major result of simulations is that correlation between consecutive service times is negligible, hence the service process can be safely described as a renewal process. The analytic model highlights that service burstiness lies essentially in the doubling of the contention window after a collision up to very large values. The trade-off between average throughput and service burstiness is obtained from the model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007
