‘The prehistory of Asian collections in Paris’: Ting Chang, Travel, Collecting, and Museums of Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century Paris, Aldershot: Ashgate 2013
The work deals with three major collectors of Asian art in Paris in the 19th century. Enrico Cernuschi and Émile Guimet (founder of Musée Guimet) acquired their substantial collection through travelling abroad while Edmond Goncourt amassed his collection at home through dealers. As the author argues, the influential postcolonial critiques of museum collections as instruments of power and authority do not take into account labour and social relations, and somatic experiences of travels to Asia. Cross-cultural encounters between Europe and Asia led to subtle inversions of power, undermining European sense of superiority. Additionally, she throws light on extensive networks and complex political, commercial, monetary relations, especially bimetallism, as well as the material conditions that affect art collection

Short-term application of ibuprofen before ovulation.
Aim of the study
The aim was to analyse if ibuprofen, as a non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, has any negative effect on oocyte competence and embryo quality. COX- inhibitors are popular over-the-counter analgesics. Whereas selective COX inhibitors have been shown to impair female fertility, data on non-selective COX inhibitors are poor. Hence, they have not been recommended for women trying to conceive.
Methods
This is an observational study comparing ibuprofen exposed and unexposed women from 18 to 42 years of age, using the model of natural cycle in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to determine oocyte and embryo quality. Follicular growth was monitored and if the follicle was mature (≥ 15mm size and estimated oestradiol level of ≥ 800pmol/l), ovulation was triggered. Women with luteinising hormone (LH) surge received 400mg ibuprofen every 8 hours to postpone ovulation, whereas women without LH surge received none (controls). Oocyte retrieval rate, oocyte maturity, fertilization rate, embryo development and embryo quality as well as implantation rate were analysed.
Results
Of the 111 women included, 63 received ibuprofen, and 48 did not. Rates of mature oocytes and implantation rate did not differ. Logistic regression showed no significant association of ibuprofen intake, LH- level or reason for infertility on embryo quality.
Conclusion
Based on our results, we suggest that, particularly within natural cycle IVF, ibuprofen does no harm around ovulation as analgesic treatment
Endcoding complexity versus minimum distance
A bound on the minimum distance of a binary error-correcting code is established given constraints on the computational time - space complexity of its encoder where the encoder is modeled as a branching program. The bound obtained asserts that if the encoder uses linear time and sublinear memory in the most general sense, then the minimum distance of the code cannot grow linearly with the block length when the rate is nonvanishing, that is, the minimum relative distance of the code tends to zero in such a setting. The setting is general enough to include nonserially concatenated turbo-like codes and various generalizations. Our argument is based on branching program techniques introduced by Ajtai. The case of constant-depth AND-OR circuit encoders with unbounded fanins are also considered. © 2005 IEEE.Ajtai M., 1999, Proceedings of the Thirty-First Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, DOI 10.1145-301250.301424; BAZZI L, 2004, IN PRESS IEEE T INF; Bazzi L. Internationalism, identity, and ideology in the shaping of postwar China
A Kite Flies Against the Wind: Internationalism, identity, and ideology in the shaping of postwar China, and the legacy for today. The postwar period saw China debate many issues that still have immense importance for understanding the China of today. Those years contain the period of the Chinese civil war of 1946-50, but also much more than that. It was also the time when China moved into a new phase of internationalization, and became embroiled in some of the biggest global debates about the links between economic and social development. It was also a time when ideological concerns were to the forefront. There were huge debates in China in those years about democracy and constitutionalism, as well as what a powerful new political force emerging in the countryside might mean. Meanwhile, new ideas about the interaction of gender and class fuelled debates over identity. In this lecture, I will look in detail at the thinking of Chinese Government ministers, idealistic revolutionaries, and other groups who shaped postwar China – and suggest that those debates have come back to haunt their 21st-century successors. Rana Mitter is Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the University of Oxford, and was the founding Director of the University’s Dickson Poon China Centre. His research focuses on the emergence of nationalism in modern China, both in the early twentieth century and in the present era. He is the author of several books, including Modern China: A Very Short Introduction (2008, new ed. 2016); A Bitter Revolution: China’s Struggle with the Modern World (2004); and China’s War with Japan, 1937-45: The Struggle for Survival, which was named as a 2013 Book of the Year in the Financial Times and the Economist, was named a 2014 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, and won the 2014 RUSI/Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature. His most recent book is China’s Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism (2020), which explains why World War II in China matters so much for its politics and society in the twenty-first century. Rana presents and contributes regularly to programmes on television and radio, commenting on contemporary Chinese politics and society. His television documentary “The Longest War: China’s World War II” was broadcast on the History Channel Asia in summer 2015. In 2023 he will take up the ST Lee Chair in US-China Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School
Some randomized code constructions from group actions
We study in this paper randomized constructions of binary linear codes that are invariant under the action of some group on the bits of the codewords. We study a non-Abelian randomized construction corresponding to the action of the dihedral group on a single copy of itself as well as a randomized Abelian construction based on the action of an Abelian group on a number of disjoint copies of itself. Cyclic codes have been extensively studied over the last 40 years. However, it is still an open question as to whether there exist asymptotically good binary cyclic codes. We argue that by using a slightly more complex group than a cyclic group, namely, the dihedral group, the existence of asymptotically good codes that are invariant under the action of the group on itself can be guaranteed. In particular, we show that, for infinitely many block lengths, a random ideal in the binary group algebra of the dihedral group is an asymptotically good rate-half code with a high probability. We argue also that a random code that is invariant under the action of an Abelian group G of odd order on k disjoint copies of itself satisfies the binary Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound with a high probability for rate 1-k under a condition on the family of groups. The underlying condition is in terms of the growth of the smallest dimension of a nontrivial F2-representation of the group and is satisfied by roughly most Abelian groups of odd order, and specifically by almost all cyclic groups of prime order. © 2006 IEEE.Burrow M., 1965, REPRESENTATION THEOR; CHEN CL, 1969, INFORM CONTROL, V15, P407, DOI 10.1016-S0019-9958(69)90497-5; CHEPYZHOV V, 1993, PROBL PEREDACHI INF, V28, P33; Curtis C.W., 1962, REPRESENTATION THEOR; KASAMI T, 1974, IEEE T INFORM THEORY, V20, P679, DOI 10.1109-TIT.1974.1055262; LIDL R, 1983, FINITE FIELDS NUMBER; LINT X, 1999, GRADUATE TEXTS MATH; LUBOTZKY A, 1988, COMBINATORICA, V8, P261, DOI 10.1007-BF02126799; MACWILLIAMS FJ, 1969, COMBINATORIAL MATH I, P317; MACWILLIAMS JF, 1992, THEORY ERROR CORRECT; Margulis G. Current Trends in Educational Research in Europe
The author deals with the “issue of the impact of educational research on educational policy and practice with special regard to teacher education” and asks how “educational research is to be defined concerning its content, method and objective.” Since “in respect of these three features, one has to draw a line from normative foundations of philosophical or religious nature and individual experience, on the one hand, to the modem approaches, both of quantitative and qualitative character, on the other”, he says, he first gives an historical overview over the development of educational history in Europe. After discussing a “considerable diversity” of educational research within the international spectrum and analyzing “organisational patterns and issues” as well as “typological and methodological issues” he finally points out the “impact of educational research on decision-making”. LQG control with minimum directed information: Semidefinite programming approach
We consider a discrete-time Linear-QuadraticGaussian (LQG) control problem in which Massey’s directed information from the observed output of the plant to the control input is minimized while required control performance is attainable. This problem arises in several different contexts, including joint encoder and controller design for data-rate minimization in networked control systems. We show that the optimal control law is a Linear-Gaussian randomized policy. We also identify the state space realization of the optimal policy, which can be synthesized by an efficient algorithm based on semidefinite programming. Our structural result indicates that the filter-controller separation principle from the LQG control theory, and the sensor-filter separation principle from the zero-delay rate-distortion theory for Gauss-Markov sources hold simultaneously in the considered problem. A connection to the data-rate theorem for mean-square stability by Nair & Evans is also established.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Team Tamas Keviczk
The education systems of Europe: Education in Europe: The way ahead
Regarding the different national education systems of modern Europe comparable features of diversity can be observed, as well as a wide range of similarities, e.g. compulsory school attendance, the horizontally structured school system or core subjects. "In the current period education systems are affected by growing influence of global changes, concerning both their internal processes and their positions in the perceptions by the society." The author points out that since this trend is marked by strong dynamism, exact predictions on times to come are very difficult; thus his "prediction at the beginning of the 21st century" are made "on the proviso that they need to be revised even in the near future." The author\u27s considerations are focused on the following criteria which mirror trends to be observed in all European education systems: Educational sovereignty; opening of schools; curriculum development; intercultural socialisation and education; teaching profession and teacher education. In an exemplary excursion into the comparative domain Europe as educational space in its own right is compared to the United States, Australia and Canada. The author concludes with remarks on the global dimension of European education. (DIPF/Orig./Kie.
