Equational fragments of systems for arithmetic

No full text
We investigate the equational fragments of formal systems for arithmetic by means of the equational theory of f-rings and of their positive cones, starting from the observation that a model of arithmetic is the positive cone of a discretely ordered ring. A consequence of the discreteness of the order is the presence of a discriminator, which allows us to derive many properties of the models of our equational theories. For example, the spectral topology of discrete f-rings is a Stone topology. We also characterize the equational fragment of lopen, and we obtain an equational version of Godel's First Incompleteness Theorem. Finally, we prove that the lattice of subvarieties of the variety of discrete f-rings is uncountable, and that the lattice of filters of the countably generated distributive free lattice can be embedded into it

Through the looking glass and what ATLAS found there: a Dark Sector search for light Dark Matter

No full text
Latest theories beyond the Standard Model predict a new `dark force' mediated by a light neutral particle called a dark photon, which opens a window to a complex Dark Sector. Through kinetic mixing a dark photon produced from the decay of a Higgs boson can decay back to SM particles with a sizeable lifetime, giving rise to striking signatures at hadron colliders. This work presents the results of a search for long-lived dark photons decaying into displaced collimated jet-like structures of leptons and light hadrons, referred to as `dark-photon jets'. The search uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of intlumi collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrts=13sqrt{s} = 13~TeV recorded in 2015--2016 of Run-2 data taking with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed number of events is consistent with the expected background, and limits on the production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the proper decay length of the dark photon are reported. The enormous amount of data that will be collected by ATLAS during the Run-3 (300 ifb300~ifb) and High-Luminosity (3000 ifb3000~ifb) 14 ev~LHC phase, and the updated ATLAS detector setup, will offer a unique opportunity to probe unexplored regions of phase space in the context of this search. Sensitivity prospects for Run-3 and High-Luminosity LHC are discussed and two new muon trigger algorithms are studied to improve the selection efficiency of displaced muon pairs. The current dark-photon jet analysis reach will continue to expand in parameter space and signature topologies proving to be a powerful tool for probing the Dark Sector at the LHC

A New Hope. Narrazioni, lingua e lettori tra letteratura e pubblicità

No full text

Thom–Sebastiani Theorems for Filtered 𝒟-Modules and for Multiplier Ideals

No full text
Abstract We give a proof of the Thom–Sebastiani type theorem for holonomic filtered D-modules satisfying certain good conditions (including Hodge modules) by using algebraic partial microlocalization. By a well-known relation between multiplier ideals and V-filtrations of Kashiwara and Malgrange, the argument in the proof implies also a Thom–Sebastiani type theorem for multiplier ideals, which cannot be deduced from an already known proof of the Thom–Sebastiani theorem for mixed Hodge modules (since the latter gives only the information of graded pieces of multiplier ideals). We also sketch a more elementary proof of the Thom–Sebastiani type theorem for multiplier ideals (as communicated to us by M. Mustaţǎ), which seems to be known to specialists, although it does not seem to be stated explicitly in the literature.</jats:p

Hydroxychloroquine for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: multifocal electroretinogram and laser flare-cell photometry study

Stefano Sebastiani, Michela Fresina, Mauro Cellini, Emilio C Campos Department of Experimental, Diagnostic, and Specialty Medicine, Ophthalmology Service, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy Purpose: To evaluate early changes in multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) and subclinical aqueous humor flare and cellularity in patients receiving hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: Ten patients receiving treatment with HCQ and no ophthalmic symptoms were enrolled. After complete ocular examination, mfERG and laser flare-cell photometry were performed. Patients were also divided into two subgroups with HCQ cumulative dose (CD) higher or lower than 500 g. Results obtained were compared with a control group of ten healthy subjects and statistical analysis was performed. Results: In patients receiving HCQ treatment, mfERG P1-wave in ring 2 showed a significant reduction in amplitude and a significant increase in latency compared to healthy control subjects, respectively resulting in 1.143 µV vs 1.316 µV (P=0.040) and 38.611 ms vs 36.334 ms (P=0.024). These changes are highly related to CD. Furthermore, when using the laser flare-cell photometry, a significant increase in aqueous humor flare and cellularity was shown in patients with CD higher than 500 g, resulting in a mean value of 14.4 ph/ms compared to 8.1 ph/ms in patients with CD lower than 500 g (P=0.0029). These reports appear highly related to CD (P=0.001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed mfERG P1-wave amplitude in ring 2 as the most sensitive value in detecting early HCQ-related retinopathy. Conclusion: MfERG was shown to be a very sensitive test in detecting early retinal toxicity and should be used for the screening of patients receiving HCQ treatment. Although less sensitive, laser flare-cell photometry can provide further information to evaluate early toxic retinal cell damage. Keywords: hydroxychloroquine, multifocal electroretinography, laser flare-cell photometry, rheumatoid arthriti
