Development of immobilised sunlight active W-Mo/Mo-V/V-W co-doped TiO2 photocatalyst by plasma electrolytic oxidation

    No full text
W-Mo/Mo-V/V-W co-doped TiO2 photocatalyst for the effective degradation of MB (methylene blue) dye under sunlight irradiation was successfully prepared by one-step Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process. The XRD, XPS, and EDS results revealed that W/Mo/V were co-doped in the TiO2 lattice. The highest redshift in the light absorption edge is recorded for the sample MV (Mo-V co-doped TiO2) with a bandgap of 2.51 eV, whereas the bandgaps for WM (W-Mo co-doped TiO2) and VW (V-W co-doped TiO2) are recorded as 2.96 eV and 2.58 eV, respectively. The co-doped photocatalysts show a typical PEO structure with a high degree of porosity favouring the dye adsorption ability. EIS, LSV, and PL analysis confirmed that the co-doped coatings pose a high degree of charge separation, suppressed charge carriers' recombination, and increased the ability to produce photocurrent. Under direct sunlight irradiation, the sample MV showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency, confirmed by MB dye degradation, then the other co-doped and undoped TiO2. This can be attributed to the synergetic effects of intense visible light absorption in the solar spectrum and the reduced charge carriers' recombination rate by acting as the trapping sites for photogenerated electrons and holes. Finally, this immobilised co-doped photocatalyst developed by the PEO process is a promising system in the quest to establish a renewable energy-assisted strategy for textile wastewater treatment application. © 2022 Elsevier B.V

Study of pulmonary function tests in patients with hypothyroidism

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism is a relatively common disease worldwide. It is defined as a clinical state resulting from insufficient secretion of thyroid hormone from thyroid gland due to some structural and/or functional impairment of thyroid hormone production. Hypothyroidism affects all organ systems. Respiratory system like any other organ system is affected by Hypothyroidism though respiratory manifestations are seldom the major complaints in hypothyroidism. The spectrum of disease involvement can range from mild dyspnea to more severe and life threatening respiratory failure. Lung volumes are usually normal but studies have shown findings suggestive of restrictive pattern of impairment. This has been attributed to decrease in both expiratory and inspiratory muscle strength, alveolar hypoventilation due to depression of hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilator drives and decrease in maximal breathing capacity in patients with Hypothyroidism. Difficulty in weaning hypothyroid patients from assisted ventilation is another associated complication. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim was to study clinical and investigative profile of patients with Hypothyroidism and to determine if there is any correlation between thyroid function with the pulmonary function among the study population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 50 cases admitted in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore was done in the period from July 2016 to June 2017. All patients will be subjected to Biochemical investigations such as Thyroid function tests-Serumtriiodothyronine (T3) Serumthyroxine (T4) and Serum Thyroid Stimulating hormone(TSH),Pulmonary Function tests such as Forced Vital capacity (FVC),Forced expiratory volume in 1st second (FEV1), Peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR), Forced expiratory flow (FEF)-(25%-75%). OBSERVATION: Hypothyroidism can have numerous effects on the respiratory system. Nevertheless, it does affect the respiratory system including respiratory muscle weakness, alveolar hypoventilation due to decreased hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilator drives, upper airway obstruction, central and obstructive sleep apnoea and even pleural effusion. Lung volumes are usually normal or mildly reduced, but maximal breathing capacity and diffusing capacity are usually reduced. FVC & FEV1 Values were found to be lower in hypothyroids. But it was significant only for FVC. The FEV1/FVC value is significantly increased among hypothyroid patients. The degree and duration of thyroid disorders lead to reduced ventilator lung function in patients with hypothyroidism. There is a significant difference in the lung functions between those subjects not on treatment and those on thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The decrease in spirometric measurements in hypothyroidism can be corrected by hormone replacement therapy. CONCLUSION: The presence of impaired pulmonary function tests in hypothyroidism has been already demonstrated in various studies. There is significant reduction in the dynamic lung functions of hypothyroid patients. Respiratory system can be affected in hypothyroidism. Simple spirometry can be considered as a means for evaluation of pulmonary function tests in these patients

In this work, we present analytical results obtained by data mining on the START (Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism) dataset. The main objective is to visualize terrorism data and make it available to users in an easy to understand format. A website is designed which contains a collection of various analyses and visualizations to interpret patterns and trends in it. The website also contains a visualization tool that provides the user with dataset exploration capabilities. Lack of understanding and awareness about global terrorism leads to diverse opinions and common misconceptions among civilians. In this age of globalization, sufficient information about this topic can help strengthen our counter-terrorism strategies, improvise security concerns, regulate better economic policies and enhance the knowledge base of civilians. The primary dataset for this project is provided by START Consortium which contains data of terrorist events since 1970. Performing various data mining and data visualization techniques to interpret the nature of terrorism to better understand its trends and patterns in over 45 years of its recorded history

Comparing bio-tribocorrosion of selective laser melted Titanium-25% Niobium and conventionally manufactured Ti-6Al-4 V in inflammatory conditions

The present study aims to evaluate the biocompatibility and bio-tribocorrosion potential of selective laser melted (SLM) Titanium-25% Niobium (Ti-25 Nb) alloy. Further the suitability of the Ti-25 Nb implant was assessed by benchmarking with conventionally manufactured commercial Ti-6Al-4 V implant. Ball-on-plate tests were performed on these alloys while submerging them in an acidic sodium lactate (ASL) medium. Simultaneously, the open circuit potential (OCV) of the two alloys were measured before, during and after sliding the indenter. Characterization of the surface morphology and composition after the test revealed that SLM fabricated Ti-25 Nb exhibits superior wear resistance and hence has greater resistance to depassivation than commercial Ti-6Al-4 V implant. Biocompatibility of the implants, in terms of cell adhesion, cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activity were also studied on the surfaces of the worn alloys. Results indicate that the worn Ti-25 Nb surface is more conducive for the healthy growth of cells and facilitates more pronounced ALP activity than that of Ti-6Al-4 V, over a duration of 14 days. The superior bio-tribocorrosion performance and biocompatibility of Ti-25 Nb is attributed to SLM induced development of compressive residual stresses, smoother worn surface, higher compactness of the Nb oxides over the alloy surface and negligible toxicity of Nb.Journal of Alloys and Compound
