Trembling on the Precipice of Possibility: A Story About Becoming a Teacher Educator for Social Justice

    No full text
AbstractThis article describes the strategy of creating an illustrated story book as an attempt to invite teacher education candidates to engage in deeper reflection and critical analysis common sense which shapes their teaching. In the process of describing how to teach preservice teachers to teach for social justice the author uses examples from her own development as a teacher educator for social justice. The author suggests four elements that may be critical to teaching teacher candidates to persevere in rigorous critique of their own common sense. They are imagery and intensifying metaphor; foolishness; a dialectic of criticality and joy; and communal sharing.            Keywords: teacher education, critical analysis, preservice teachers, social justic

Disentangling Preservice Teachers from the Webs of Idle Talk: A Grounded Theory for Generative Teacher Education

    No full text
The purpose of this research was to understand the possibilities for helping preservice teachers develop cynicism and joy dialectically so that they might engage in critique and develop hopefulness. A sustained dialectic of cynicism and joy in teacher education enables preservice teachers and other educators perceive injustices and inequities and to remain hopeful about the possibilities for liberatory education. Thus, it is possible to sustain conviction, resist oppression and act creatively. I analyzed 161 preservice teachers' philosophy papers produced over three semesters in seven sections of Introduction to Teaching course I taught at a major research university in the South. I used grounded theory methods to develop a generative theory for teacher education. Three major conceptual constructs developed from my analysis: reality, fun and passion. Using these as a framework, theory was developed to understand preservice teachers' attitudes against critique and towards naïve optimism. Using the constructs reality, fun and passion I discovered deep roots that bound preservice teachers to stereotypes of good teachers and appropriate pedagogies. Cultural, historical and social structures kept preservice teachers from recognizing the possibilities for thinking critically without giving up hope. These deeply embedded structures interfered with preservice teachers' ability to engage in conversations and struggle with the meanings of good teaching beyond management and control. Most preservice teachers in this study had not engaged in critical analysis of common sense discourses about teaching. Most entered a state of denial when pressed to question inequitable, unjust and disproportionate institutions in education. Denial limited the possibilities for moving past despair and into hope and action. Preservice teachers in denial survive by maintaining the status quo. They do not experience joy which is a force for social action because they do not engage in critique. When teachers are in denial imagination, energy and faith are severely limited. Questions my research centered on the value of integrating spirituality into critical teacher education, the necessity of social foundations, and the validity of interdisciplinary research in teacher education

Maternal intake of fat, riboflavin and nicotinamide and the risk of having offspring with congenital heart defects

    No full text
With the exception of studies on folic acid, little evidence is available concerning other nutrients in the pathogenesis of congenital heart defects (CHDs). Fatty acids play a central role in embryonic development, and the B-vitamins riboflavin and nicotinamide are co-enzymes in lipid metabolism. Aim of the study To investigate associations between the maternal dietary intake of fats, riboflavin and nicotinamide, and CHD risk in the offspring. Methods A case-control family study was conducted in 276 mothers of a child with a CHD comprising of 190 outflow tract defects (OTD) and 86 non-outflow tract defects (non-OTD) and 324 control mothers of a non-malformed child. Mothers filled out general and food frequency questionnaires at 16 months after the index-pregnancy, as a proxy of the habitual food intake in the preconception period. Nutrient intakes (medians) were compared between cases and controls by Mann¿Whitney U test. Odds ratios (OR) for the association between CHDs and nutrient intakes were estimated in a logistic regression model. Results Case mothers, in particular mothers of a child with OTD, had higher dietary intakes of saturated fat, 30.9 vs. 29.8 g/d; P <0.05. Dietary intakes of riboflavin and nicotinamide were lower in mothers of a child with an OTD than in controls (1.32 vs. 1.41 mg/d; P <0.05 and 14.6 vs. 15.1 mg/d; P <0.05, respectively). Energy, unsaturated fat, cholesterol and folate intakes were comparable between the groups. Low dietary intakes of both riboflavin

Do estuaries pose a toxic contamination risk for wading birds?

    No full text
The impact of potentially toxic chemicals on wildlife is commonly assessed by comparing the intake of the contaminant with the “no observable effects level” (NOAEL) of intake. It is known, however, that there are considerable uncertainties inherent in this method. This study presents a Monte-Carlo based model to assess the degree of risk posed to birds (dunlin, Calidris alpina) from important estuarine habitats, and to show the limitations of such risk assessments, particularly with regard to data availability. The model was applied to predict the uptake of metals (Hg, Pb) in this shorebird species in Poole Harbour and the Severn Estuary/Bristol Channel, UK, two internationally important shorebird habitats. The results show that in both areas, Pb and Hg concentrations may pose an ecologically relevant toxic risk to wading birds. For Pb, uncertainty in NOAEL values dominates the overall uncertainty. Use of lethal toxicity data (LD50/100) was investigated as a method for assessing sub-lethal impacts from Hg. It was found that this method led to a significant under-estimate of the potential impact of Hg contamination, compared with direct estimation of NOAEL

Ivanov e Roman Jakobson – attribuiti a Bachtin.
