    A neural networks-based PMW-IR fusion technique to derive half hourly rainfall estimates at 0.1° resolution

    The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a new operational procedure to produce half-hourly rainfall estimates at 0.18 spatial resolution. Rainfall is estimated using a neural networks (NN)–based approach utilizing passive microwave (PMW) and infrared satellite measurements. Several neural networks are tested, from multilayer perceptron to adaptative resonance theory architectures. The NN analytical selection process is explained. Halfhourly rain gauge data over Andalusia, Spain, are used for validation purposes. Several interpolation procedures are tested to transform point to areal measurements, including the maximum entropy estimation method. Rainfall estimations are also compared with Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite precipitation index and histogram-matching results. Half-hourly rainfall estimates give ;0.6 correlations with PMW data (;0.2 with gauge), and average correlations of up to 0.7 and 0.6 are obtained for 0.58 and 0.18 monthly accumulated estimates, respectively

    This paper presents a new algorithm to generate quantitative precipitation estimates from infrared (IR) satellite imagery using passive microwave (PMW) data from Special Sensor Microwave/Imager sensor (SSM/I) satellites as ancillary information. To generate the estimates, we model the probabilistic distribution function (PDF) of the rainfall rates through the maximum entropy method (MEM), applying a cumulative histogram matching (HM) technique to the IR brightness temperatures. This results in a straightforward algorithm that can be formulated as an algebraic expression, providing a simple method to derive rainfall estimates using only IR data. The main application of the method is the direct estimation of rainfall rates and accumulated rainfall from geostationary satellites, providing appropriate temporal and spatial resolutions (up to 15 min/4km when the Meteosat Second Generation satellite becomes available). The proposed method can be easily applied at GOES or current Meteosat satellite reception stations to generate instantaneous rainfall rates estimates with little computational cost. Here we provide examples of applications using the Global Infrared Database and Meteosat images. Our results have been compared with GOES Precipitation Index (GPI) and validated against Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC)-land rain gauge measurements, at 5‡, monthly accumulations. We have obtained correlations of 0.88 for the algorithm, while the GPI yields correlations of 0.85. Preliminary comparisons with other algorithms over Australia also show how the performances of the algorithm are similar to those of more complex models. Finally, we propose some improvements and fine-tuning procedures that can be applied to the algorithm

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
