Behavioral simulation of array processors in the APES environment

    No full text
APES is an integrated, flexible CAD environment developed for behavioral design, simulation and evaluation of array processor architectures. This paper discusses in detail the core of the system, i.e., the behavioral simulator. This is an interactive subsystem which allows one to set up and run the simulation of the array using the definition of the array architecture supplied by the user. This task computes the output results of the whole array, of each processing element and of each functional unit. The concept of time is also defined and handled by the simulator so to allow subsequent performance evaluation. Functions are available for tracing, for inserting break- points, for step-by-step execution and for selection of display format. The simulator interacts with the other modules of APES (e.g., the Fault Injector, the Reconfiguration Manager) and produces results which can also be post-processed by other modules of APES (e.g., the Diagnostic Evaluator) to aid the designer in evaluating particular characteristics of the architecture

Hill-climbing heuristics for optimal hardware dimensioning and software allocation in fault-tolerant distributed systems

    No full text
An optimum distributed architecture with fault-tolerance capabilities for a given software application may be obtained by allowing allocation algorithms to evolve without any existing-hardware constraint. Distributed software partitioning and allocation is done using the simulated annealing optimization algorithm. To define the cost function used by the optimization algorithm, a model for interacting processes constituting the software application is presented. Tuning of algorithm parameters has been considered to assure convergence at a reasonable cost in terms of computation time

Migrating to the Web legacy application: The Sinfor project

    No full text
Various approaches can be used to migrate legacy applications to the Web. In particular, migrating data-intensive legacy applications (e.g. traditional application for business management) needs methodological approach to face the challenges implied by the process. The Ubiquitous Web Applications (UWA) framework is one of the most innovative and complete frameworks for conceptual user centered modelling of a Web application. In this paper we describe the application of UWA to a real experience of reengineering a real legacy application for customer's order management

Effects of systemic treatment with statins on skin barrier function and stratum corneum water-holding capacity

Background:Topical application of inhibitors of HMGCoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis, has been shown to induce impairment of barrier function. Objective:Assessing whether oral administration of statins used for reducing blood levels of cholesterol induces functional changes in stratum corneum barrier. Materials and Methods:69 subjects of both sexes undergoing treatment for hypercholesterolemia (mean age 48 ± 11 years) entered the study; 43 had been treated with simvastatin and 11 with pravastatin for 6 months; 15 only on dietary regimen served as controls. Efficiency of stratum corneum water barrier was evaluated by transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement using an evaporimeter; water-holding capacity of the stratum corneum was assessed by the sorption-desorption test measured by capacitance. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA. Results:No differences were found between the groups (simvastatin, pravastatin, diet) concerning both basal TEWL and the dynamic of water binding in the stratum corneum. Conclusions:Prolonged treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs based on inhibition of HMGCoA reductase does not alter the permeability barrier of the skin. © 1996 S. Karger AG, Basel

Manual of recommendations for the diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of patients with Breast Cancer of the Tumor Center Munich - a regional hands-on publication

    No full text
The revised 11th edition of the Manual of Recommendations for the Diagnosis, Therapy, and Follow-Up of Patients with Breast Cancer of the publications series of the Tumor Center Munich (Tumorzentrum Munchen, TZM) is an excellent example of a regional hands-on publication which, while based on national and international guidelines, does not replace these. By virtue of countless additions and revisions in the course of 10 editions, the `blue tumor manual for breast cancer' has matured into a hands-on reference work which throughout Germany has found its place on the desks of physicians, and has thus gained a reputation reaching far beyond the TZM. The reputation of this manual is on the one hand founded on the professional competence of the individual authors and project group members. The great strength of the project group, however, surely lies in the broad spectrum of expertise of more than 180 experts of all kinds of specialties, whose continuing interdisciplinary exchange in the course of the present revision has again led to a result which is arousing interest far beyond Munich. This article summarizes some of the TZM project group's own positions on data collection, prevention, adjuvant systemic therapy, and follow-up treatment in an exemplary fashion

    <i>Estrella distante</i> as account of the Whole-World

In Estrella distante (1996), one of Roberto Bolaño's short novels, we already find the entire machinery of referentiality and intertextuality, that is one of the factors of the “worldliness” of the author and his work. In this article, the author discusses some detective fiction strategies used in Estrella distante (1996), paying particular attention to those ones present in the configuration of the character Alberto Ruiz-Tagle/Carlos Wieder, who displays some recurring themes in Bolaño’s work: a parody of the literary world, the link between art and violence, and the representation of absolute evil, among others. The author also stresses that even though most of the Chilean writer’s work is built on the basic tenets of crime fiction, it should not be considered part of this literary genre.
