Environmental sustainability of poultry meat production
The main effects of planet human growth, urbanization and change in eating habits are discussed. Undernutrition and malnutrition are still high in many developing countries and food of animal origin can increase the nutritive value of human diet. The increasing demand worldwide for food of animal origin, particularly in developing countries, is a challenge for agriculture and the livestock sector, already facing criticism in terms of environmental sustainability. Meat production is considered by the public opinion as one of the most responsible human activities for climate change, water contamination, acidification of the eco-systems, loss of biodiversity, etc. However, monogastrics and particularly poultry can be very efficient and sustainable, supplying high quality food which can supplement food of plant origin in a balanced human diet
Effect of genetic rabbit lines on lipid content, lipolytic activities and fatty acid composition of hind leg meat and perirenal fat
The influence of genetic origin on lipid content, lipolytic activities and fatty acid composition of rabbit leg meat and perirenal fat was studied and changes in free fatty acids and oxidative parameters during refrigerated storage evaluated. Three rabbits lines were used, line R selected for growth rate and lines V and A selected for litter size at weaning. Line R had higher fat contents and higher lipolytic activities in the meat of the hind leg than lines A and V. Differences between lines were found in the fatty acids of the meat and perirenal fat. Lower SFA and higher PUFA percentages were found in line A. Free fatty acids and oxidative parameters were little influenced by rabbit line. Animals were measured at the same stage of maturity, thus it can be considered that differences found between lines are genetic differences and not differences due to the degree of maturity
Comparación entre líneas y efecto del almacenamiento en refrigeración en los lípidos de la carne de conejo
Effect of the dietary fat on fatty acid composition and oxidative stability of rabbit meat
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Influence of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum supplementation in drinking water on egg quality and layer performance
Seed calorific value in different maize genotypes
Biomass represents an important source of renewable energy, and in most countries it is now considered essential for environmental policies to include sustainable energy production. The direct burning of maize grains contaminated by mycotoxins for house heating or for harvested grain drying may represent an interesting and economically efficient way to salvage an otherwise unusable product. This work aims to identify those seed traits correlated with the heat content, which can be helpful in assessing the suitability for direct burning of existing maize genotypes and in the development of breeding programs for seed calorific value.
