«Al fine di tutt’i disii»: osservazioni su Dante (Pupi Avati, 2022)

    No full text
This article aims to propose an analysis of the film Dante (2022), written and directed by Pupi Avati. Firstly, the author discusses the quantity and the variety of films set in the Middle Ages and the practice usually adopted in this genre. Then, the main themes recurring in Avati’s filmography are identified in Dante: friendship, betrayal, passion for adventure, fascination for magic and death, etc. Afterwards, she examines the structure of the movie and the significance of Boccaccio’s travel, both real and metaphorical, to Ravenna in search of Dante’s daughter. Avati tries to recapture the real Dante and in order to achieve this, he stages the poet’s youth and his love for Beatrice, because Dante is conceivable exclusively as a eternal boy, young and in love

    No full text

In this thesis we discuss the elastic scattering from theoretical as well as experimental point of view. In the theory part, we present several mod- els and their predictions for the LHC. We also discuss the Coulomb-hadronic interference, where we present a new eikonal calculation to all orders of α, the fine-structure constant. In the experimental part we introduce the TOTEM experiment which is dedicated, among other subjects, to the measurement of the elastic scattering at the LHC. This measurement is performed primarily with the Roman Pot (RP) detectors - movable beam-pipe insertions hundreds of meters from the interaction point, that can detect protons scattered to very small angles. We discuss some aspects of the RP simulation and reconstruc- tion software. A central point is devoted to the techniques of RP alignment - determining the RP sensor positions relative to each other and to the beam. At the end we present the analysis of TOTEM's first elastic scattering mea- surement at the LHC. The resulting...Faculty of Mathematics and PhysicsMatematicko-fyzikální fakult

    Forward Physics

    No full text
Forward Physics measurements at the LHC start will be done by TOTEM, LHCf, and by the forward calorimeters of ATLAS (ZDC) and CMS (CASTOR, ZDC) at moderate luminosities. These detectors will measure the forward particle production and energy flow also relevant for cosmic ray experiments, and low-x QCD processes. Dedicated beam optics allows TOTEM to measure the total pp cross section, elastic scattering as well as diffraction

Reconstruction software for high multiplicity events in gem detectors

    No full text
We present a general description of the offline software developed for the reconstruction of inelastic events by the TOTEM T2 telescope at the LHC. Tracking reconstruction in the OMS forward region, where T2 is installed, is challenged by a large amount of charged particles generated by the interaction with the material placed between the IP and T2. In this contribution we describe the simulation of the T2 GEM chambers as well as the reconstruction procedures employed to track the particles in such severe environment. The strategy for the telescope alignment and the measurement of the charged particle pseudorapidity distribution is finally presented

Panel. Print and the Potboiler : Faulkner\u27s Popular Reception

\u3c The Mysteries of Memphis: Sanctuary and the Pornographic Tradition / Amy A. Foley, University of Rhode IslandThis essay locates Faulkner’s Sanctuary within the printing tradition of the popular city mysteries novel that developed in the 1830s. In drawing comparisons between the mid-nineteenth century and early twentieth century sensationalist printing industry, I define and extend the boundaries of pornography from a historical, material and aesthetic perspective. Historically, I identify similar cultural conditions in the printing of Sanctuary and earlier sensational, subversive and pornographic texts. Aesthetically, I establish the novel within a regional city mysteries genre: Southern urban pornography.James Avati, William Faulkner, and the Art of the Paperback Novel / M. Thomas Inge, Randolph-Macon CollegeArtist James Avati (1912-2004) painted the covers for all seven of the William Faulkner novels issued in the Signet paperback series between 1949 and 1954. These paintings, arguably, gave Faulkner a higher cachet on the newsstand or drugstore racks than they might have had otherwise because of Avati’s associations with Erskine Caldwell and Mickey Spillane. This presentation undertakes a study of Avati, his part in the paperback revolution, his association with Faulkner, and his contribution to the popular perception of the author and his work

First test of cold edgeless silicon microstrip detectors

    No full text
Silicon microstrip detectors will provide the forward tracking in the TOTEM experiment at the LHC. To allow efficient tracking closest to the beam ( approximately equals 1 mm) these detectors should be sensitive up to their physical edge (i.e. edgeless). Edgeless (without guard rings) microstrip planar detectors can be operated at cryogenic temperatures (about 130 degree K) where leakage currents due to the active edge are drastically reduced. A silicon microstrip prototype, cut perpendicular to the strips, has been tested with a pion beam at CERN to study its efficiency close to the edge by using reference tracks from a simple silicon telescope. Results indicate that the detector measures tracks with good efficiency up to the physical edge of the silicon

The TOTEM T2 Detector at LHC: Track Reconstruction Algorithm and Preliminary Measurements

    No full text
TOTEM is an experiment designed to perform total cross section, elastic scattering, and diffractive dissociation measurements at the LHC. It is made up of elastic detectors set in the tunnel (Roman Pots) and two inelastic telescopes: T1 and T2, located in the same cavern as the CMS experiment. The T2 telescope is placed at the very forward region of the CMS's detector, in a high radioactive environment, as revealed by measurements performed using radiation sensors. The amount of particles produced in the interaction with material in front of and around the detector was found to be particularly challenging for both detector performances and physics analysis. The offline software developed for the reconstruction of inelastic events tracks is briefly described. Internal and general alignments of the telescopes have been another complex issue: the strategy to correct the misalignment biases are explained. A preliminary measurements of the forward charged particle 11 distribution performed by T2 is also presented
