R v Dr Priya Ramnath
The recent conviction at Birmingham Crown Court of Dr Priya Ramnath for the manslaughter of a patient under her care at Stafford District General Hospital, occurs no less than a decade after the original inquest into the victim’s death recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. This verdict was later overturned following a second inquest in 2004 and substituted for a verdict of unlawful killing..

Determination of pressure balance distortion coefficient and zero-pressure effective area uncertainties
The behaviour of piston-cylinder operated pressure balances is characterized by the
distortion coefficient λ and zero-pressure effective area
A0 which model the variation of a pressure balance’s area in
terms of the applied pressure. This paper determines the uncertainties in
λ and A0 when utilizing the method of
cross-floating with another pressure balance standard whose parameters and associated
uncertainties are known. A limitation that is frequently encountered in many attempts of
the uncertainty analysis for a pressure balance is that no readily accessible uncertainty
quantification framework for the distortion coefficient is present. As a result the
uncertainty in a pressure balance’s area at elevated applied pressures is typically
underestimated in the absence of this uncertainty information. We firstly review the
uncertainty formulation for a pressure balance generated pressure involving correlation
effects in terms of an implicit multivariate matrix equation approach and then utilizing
the resulting solution present the methodology to consistently perform the uncertainty
analysis for λ and A0
Comparison of the GUM and Monte Carlo measurement uncertainty techniques with application to effective area determination in pressure standards
A common measurement model for a gas operated piston-cylinder based pressure standard
effective area is the well known integral equation formulation originally developed by
Dadson of the NPL. However a problem with directly applying this exact mathematical model
is that it cannot be easily cast into a functional form suitable for application of the
Guide to the expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) which is reliant on the
concept of sensitivity coefficients without various simplifications. In this paper, we
examine the standard approximations that are currently necessary in order to directly
apply the GUM for a pressure standard effective area uncertainty determination. We also
compare and contrast this to the exact effective area uncertainty results obtained through
the direct application of the Monte Carlo Method (MCM) which has recently been published
as Supplement 1 to the GUM. Based on these investigations we also draw some preliminary
conclusions on the relative merits on the extent to which the shape of the piston and
cylinder radii and whose uncertainties may vary along the engagement length of the
piston-cylinder may be modeled and incorporated into a piston-cylinder’s effective area
uncertainty calculation

Micellar structure and micellar control of photochemical reactions
In view of the vast potential of micellar systems as media in which reactions may be conducted, a clear understanding of the structure of micelles is essential. The unique features of micelles and how these have been utilized to catalyse and control photochemical reactivity are briefly surveyed here. Micellar media, when used for chemical reactions, exhibit features that are completely different from those of ordinary non-aqueous solvents. A thermal or photochemical reaction conducted in micellar media is influenced by the effects of the micellar environment which result in control and/or modification of reactivity. The salient features of micelles that influence the photochemical reactivity are cage and microviscosity effects, localization and compartmentalization effects, pre-orientational, polarity and counterion effects
Computation and Asymptotics
This book addresses the task of computation from the standpoint of asymptotic analysis and multiple scales that may be inherent in the system dynamics being studied. This is in contrast to the usual methods of numerical analysis and computation. The technical literature is replete with numerical methods such as Runge-Kutta approach and its variations, finite element methods, and so on. However, not much attention has been given to asymptotic methods for computation, although such approaches have been widely applied with great success in the analysis of dynamic systems. The presence of different scales in a dynamic phenomenon enable us to make judicious use of them in developing computational approaches which are highly efficient. Many such applications have been developed in such areas as astrodynamics, fluid mechanics and so on. This book presents a novel approach to make use of the different time constants inherent in the system to develop rapid computational methods. First, the fundamental notions of asymptotic analysis are presented with classical examples. Next, the novel systematic and rigorous approaches of system decomposition and reduced order models are presented. Next, the technique of multiple scales is discussed. Finally application to rapid computation of several aerospace systems is discussed, demonstrating the high efficiency of such methods
