    Humans are exposed to ultraviolet radiation in their normal day-to-day lives. Much research has been conducted into the impact of exposure to UVB radiation (280 – 320nm), whist research into impact of exposures to UVA radiation (320 – 400 nm) is gaining momentum. Exposure to UVA radiation has been linked to increasing the risk of skin cancer, DNA damage, ocular diseases and immunosuppression. Unlike UVB radiation, UVA radiation is transmitted through material such as window glass found in offices and homes. Accordingly, humans are exposed to this radiation in environments where UV exposure is not normally associated (indoors). This paper describes a prototype UVA dosimeter that is responsive to the UVA wavelengths only and does not respond to the UVB wavelengths and how this dosimeter can be used to assess personal UVA exposure

    Archeologisch onderzoek bij de herinrichting van het centrum van Bergeijk (2011)

    In de periode januari – begin april 2011 is in drie fasen door het AAC/Projectenbureau (inmiddels Diachron UvA bv geheten) een archeologische opgraving en begeleiding uitgevoerd in het centrum van de gemeente Bergeijk. Dit vond plaats op en om het driehoekige marktplein direct naast de oude Hofkerk. De werkzaamheden bestonden uit het begeleiden van de aanleg van kabels, leidingen en het uitvoeren van een opgraving op de plaatsen waar de bodem werd verstoord door de verplaatsing van de kerkhofmuur en plantstroken voor nieuwe bomen. Ondanks de soms smalle sleuven heeft het onderzoek veel nieuwe informatie opgeleverd over de geschiedenis van het Hofplein en de ontwikkeling van de middeleeuwse kerkgrachten

    Clima, solo e relevo são fatores importantes que detenninam a composição química da uva e as caracterlsticas sensoriais dos vinhos. Os vinhedos implantados na região de Pinto Bandeira, localizada na Serra Gaúcha, estão a mais de 500· m de altitude podendo produzir uvas e, consequentemente, vinhos com caracterlsticas peculiares. As amostras anualmente encaminhadas para a avaliação sensorial no êmbito do Conselho Regulador da Asprovinho e da Embrapa Uva e Vinho, foram degustadas em 2006, por um painel de sete enôlogos.Resumo

    UVA irradiation of human skin vasodilates arterial vasculature and lowers blood pressure independently of nitric oxide synthase

    The incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease correlates with latitude and rises in winter. The molecular basis for this remains obscure. As nitric oxide (NO) metabolites are abundant in human skin we hypothesised that exposure to UVA may mobilise NO bioactivity into the circulation to exert beneficial cardiovascular effects independently of vitamin D. In 24 healthy volunteers irradiation of the skin with 2 Standard Erythemal Doses of UVA lowered BP, with concomitant decreases in circulating nitrate and rises in nitrite concentrations. Unexpectedly, acute dietary intervention aimed at modulating systemic nitrate availability had no effect on UV-induced hemodynamic changes, indicating that cardiovascular effects were not mediated via direct utilization of circulating nitrate. UVA irradiation of the forearm caused increased blood flow independently of NO-synthase activity, suggesting involvement of pre-formed cutaneous NO stores. Confocal fluorescence microscopy studies of human skin pre-labelled with the NO-imaging probe DAF2-DA revealed that UVA-induced NO release occurs in a NOS-independent, dose-dependent fashion, with the majority of the light-sensitive NO pool in the upper epidermis. Collectively, our data provide mechanistic insights into an important function of the skin in modulating systemic NO bioavailability which may account for the latitudinal and seasonal variations of BP and cardiovascular disease.Journal of Investigative Dermatology accepted article preview online, 20 January 2014
