Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Left Femoral Artery Occlusion due to Neglected Closed Fracture Distal Femur: A Case Report
Full text linkBackground: Distal femur fractures must always be considered for vascular disorders given the high risk. The incidence rate of femoral fractures is 1/10000 patients per year with the incidence rate of vascular injury around 0.10% -2.00%. Salter-Harris (SH) fracture classification is used in cases of fractures involving the growth plate (physeal plate) in children. Volkmann's ischemic contracture is caused by severe injury to the deep tissue and nerves. If tissue pressure is equal to or more than the perfusion pressure of the capillary, the microcirculation will be disrupted and ischemic occur. Normal myosit cells will be replaced by fibroblasts that tend to contract.Subjects and Method: A 10 years old boy had a traffic accident while riding a motorcycle 6 days before the patient came to the hospital. The patient could not walk, feeling pain and swelling on the left knee, the patient didn’t bring to the hospital immediately after the accident. On physical examination, there was angulation in the distal left femur, there was tenderness on palpation and unable to do dorsiflexion or moving the fingers of the left foot but still could feel touch stimulation on the pedis.Results: In our patient case with the diagnosis of left femoral artery occlusion et causa closed fracture distal femur (Salter-Harris type II) managed by surgery to release the femoral artery with internal fixation to the distal femur using Kirschner wire (minimally invasive) and massage to the femoral artery give optimal results.Conclusion: Surgery to release the femoral artery with internal fixation to the distal femur using Kirschner wire (minimally invasive) and massage to the femoral artery give an optimal result.Keywords: Salter-Harris fracture, femoral artery, Kirschner wire, Volkmann's ischaemic contractureCorrespondence: Pamudji Utomo. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Bilateral Simultaneous Rupture of the Quadriceps Tendon in a Healthy Elderly Woman: A Case Report
Full text linkBackground: Quadriceps tendon ruptures are uncommon injury that affects middle-aged women, predominantly it affects middle aged men. However, the bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is extremely rare in the absence of systemic disease.Subjects and Method: We reported a case of bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture in a healthy 65 year old female. She felt pain in both knees since 4 months before entering the hospital. Local physical examination on both knees reveal the loss of normal contour of rectus femoris, tenderness at superior pole patella the ruptur site, and palpable defect within 2 cm of superior pole patella. Patient unable to extend knee against resistance, and unable to perform straight leg raise. The patient was carried out a surgical repair with consent.Results: After the surgery both knees were immobilized with knee extension splint for 6 weeks. Patient evaluation revealed no pain and progressive recovery of muscular strength after four months and could be able to walk and returned to normal activity.Conclusion: Surgery is needed to repair quadriceps rupture.Keywords: Quadriceps tendon, quadriceps rupture, repair tendon.Correspondence: Pamudji Utomo. Clinical Profile of Patients with Manus Fracture Caused by Firecracker Blast
Full text linkBackground: Fireworks are traditionally used by various cultures or groups for celebrations. Estimated 10,000 to 12,600 people are injured because of fireworks in America every year. The type of fireworks that cause the highest injury is firecrackers with the incidence rate of 30% to 67% of all cases of injury due to fireworks. Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world and firecrackers are often used to welcome Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. This study aimed to report the Clinical profile of patients with manus fracture caused by firecracker blast.Case Presentation: The case study was taken from patients of Karima Utama Surgical Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia, during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr (from May 14 to June 15) 2018. A total of 36 patients were fractured due to firework explosions recorded in medical records during that period. Data such as gender, age and fracture diagnosis were collected in this study.Results: Males have a higher prevalence of 28 (78%) than female 8 (22%), with the highest group age between 11 to 20 years with 11 cases (31%) and more than 60 years being the lowest age group with 2 (6 %) cases of a total of 36 respondents. The right hand as the dominant hand has an injury incidence rate of 31 (86%) compared to the left hand 5 (14%) and more often occurs single fracture 22 (61%) compared to multiple fractures 14 (39%) including the amputated phalanx.Conclusion: Our study showed 36 patients had fractures of the manus due to firecrackers, with the majority of male victims 28 (78%) and single manus fractures 22 (61%) with the right-hand dominance at the age between 11 to 20 years.Keywords: manus fracture, firecrackerCorrespondence: Pamudji Utomo.
