Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

A rare case of suicide by multiple gunshot wounds to the head

Firearm injuries represent a significant topic of forensic pathology. The literature in this regard is innumerable, and can seem to have extensively covered the topic of this paper. However, the biological reality and the unpredictability of the concrete cases, continue and will always continue to present unusual circumstances that are worth examining for forensic pathologists. In this case report, we performed a comparative analysis between a particular case and the scientific literature. The case in question concerns suicide by single-shot short firearm, in which the subject shot himself three times on two sides of the head, without affecting the brain during its self-suppressive intent. Cases similar to this are always cause for reasonable doubt, which can only be solved with the contribution of forensic pathology and in-depth research

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

A case of quick mummification: The influence of intrinsict and extrinsic factors in the post mortal processes

After death, the corpse is subjected to many different post mortem phenomena that change the whole biochemical and physical structures of the vital body. Those phenomena have different evolutions depending on numerous factors typical of the death body and of the setting where the body lies. Mummification is one of the special transformative process that consist in the drying of the entire body structures and requires particular wheatear condition and timing

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Diagonal Compression Tests on Stone Masonry Wallettes Jacketed with Different Techniques

    No full text
This paper presents a comprehensive experimental campaign performed on natural stone masonry wallettes jacketed with 14 different combinations of mortars, meshes, and connectors. After characterizing the mortars and the bare masonry, diagonal compression tests were performed on three specimens for each jacketing solution. The performance of a fiber-reinforced, high-performance mortar without reinforcing mesh was investigated, considering its application to one or both sides of the wall, with and without connectors. Then, two different fabric reinforced cementitious matrix solutions were tested, using unidirectional or bidirectional textiles. Finally, the effects of FRP mesh spacing, mortar composition, and connector type and density were explored on reinforced plaster applications. The test outcomes were analyzed in terms of failure mode, tensile strength, and corresponding shear deformation capacity. All combinations proved effective at increasing the tensile strength compared to the bare masonry, with ratios between 1.9 and 4.7

Skeletonization of the internal thoracic artery: a randomized comparison of harvesting methods.

We performed a randomized study to compare internal thoracic artery (ITA) flow response to two harvesting methods used in the skeletonization procedure: ultrasonic scalpel and bipolar electrocautery. Sixty patients scheduled for CABG were randomized to receive either ultrasonically (ns30 patients) or electrocautery (ns30 patients) skeletonized ITAs. Intraoperative ITA graft mean flows were obtained with a transit-time flowmeter. ITA flows were evaluated at the beginning (Time 1) and at the end (Time 2) of the harvesting procedure. Post-cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) flow measurement (Time 3) was obtained in the ITA grafts anastomosed to the left anterior descending artery. Intraoperative mean flow decreased significantly within ultrasonic group (Group U) and electrocautery group (Group E) at the end of the harvesting procedure (P-0.0001 in both cases). Within both groups the final mean flow measured on anastomosed ITAs (Time 3) was significantly higher than the beginning ITA flow value (Time 1). No statistical difference was noted comparing ITA flows between the two groups at any time of evaluation. Skeletonization harvesting of the ITA produces a modification of the mean flow. The quantity and the reversibility of this phenomenon, probably related to vasospasm, are independent from the energy source used in the skeletonization procedure
