Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply
This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.
Indian Hill C Style and Coding Standards as amended for U of T Zoology
This document is an annotated (by the last author) version of the original paper of the same title. It describes a set of coding standards and recommendations which are local standards for officially-supported UNIX programs. The scope is coding style, not functional organization. Introduction This document is a result of a committee formed at Indian Hill to establish a common set of coding standards and recommendations for the Indian Hill community. The scope of this work is the coding style, not the functional organization of programs. The standards in this document are not specific to ESS programming only 1 . Understanding Rhetoric: A Guide to Writing by Elizabeth Losh, Jonathan Alexander, Kevin Cannon, and Zander Cannon [Book Review]
The authors of Understanding Rhetoric utilize the comics medium to present writing concepts for first-year composition courses and beyond. The title is a nod to the foundational comics theory treatise by Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics, in which the animated author explores how comics make meaning through image and text. Like McCloud, Understanding Rhetoric’s authors explain rhetoric and writing through didactic content that directly addresses the reader. Losh, Alexander, Cannon, and Cannon take form as characters Liz, Jonathan, Kevin, and Zander in the textbook as they engage students and instructors alike through compelling narrative, humor, visual metaphors, thoughtful examples, and authentic author voices
Cannon-Thurston maps for pared manifolds of bounded geometry
Let Nh ∈, H(M, P) be a hyperbolic structure of bounded geometry on a pared manifold such that each component of ∂0M = ∂M - P is incompressible. We show that the limit set of Nh is locally connected by constructing a natural Cannon-Thurston map. This provides a unified treatment, an alternate proof and a generalization of results due to Cannon and Thurston, Minsky, Bowditch, Klarreich and the author

Cannon Mills and Kannapolis: Persistent Paternalism in a Textile Town
In Cannon Mills and Kannapolis, Tim Vanderburg critically examines the rise of the Cannon Mills textile company and the North Carolina community that grew up around it. Beginning with the founding of the company and the establishment of its mill town by James W. Cannon, the author draws on a wealth of primary sources to show how, under Cannon’s paternalism, workers developed a collective identity and for generations accepted the limits this paternalism placed on their freedom. After exploring the growth and maturation of Cannon Mills against the backdrop of World War I and its aftermath, Vanderburg examines the impact of the Great Depression and World War II and then analyzes the postwar market forces that, along with federal policies and unionization, set in motion the industry’s shift from a paternalistic model to bureaucratic authority. The final section of the book traces the decline of paternalism and the eventual decline of Cannon Mills when the death of the founder’s son, Charles Cannon, led to three successive sales of the company. Pillowtex, its final owner, filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated in 2003.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/fbg/1005/thumbnail.jp
