    No full text
The research hypothesis for this study was to investigate the potential of microwave imaging using unidirectional antennas for monitoring neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease. The data was collected using a wearable device and measurement setup that included five lamb brain phantoms that were designed to mimic the lateral ventricle enlargement due to Alzheimer's disease .The data include both the magnitude and the phase for each of the five phantoms at each discrete frequency. The most interesting thing about this study is that the data from the microwave imaging with unidirectional antennas was able to accurately show the enlargement of the lateral ventricles and the presence of cerebral spinal fluid in the lamb brain phantoms. This suggests that this method could be used to track neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.This data can be interpreted and used by researchers and scientists working on developing novel signal processing and imaging techniques, as well as those interested in validating simulation results. It can also be used to further investigate the potential of microwave imaging for monitoring neurodegenerative diseases

Partial Discharge Characterization of HFO(E) Gas Using Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Antenna for Medium Voltage Switchgear Application

The most frequent and dangerous hazard to the electrical insulation of high voltage (HV) and high field (HF) equipment is partial discharges (PD). The development of PD activity is both a cause and an indicator of insulation degradation, which could ultimately lead to insulation breakdown. For electrical power equipment to operate safely and dependably, continuous and efficient PD monitoring must be conveniently performed to prevent associated damages and any harm to electrical power equipment. This work presents the design of a new UHF antenna for detecting PD in medium-voltage gas-insulated applications. The working frequency band of the proposed UHF antenna is 370 MHz–1300 MHz, which translates into a total bandwidth of 930 MHz UHF frequency band. Over the whole operating frequency of the antenna, the return loss is less than -10dB. Recently, an eco-friendly insulating gas, HFO1336mzz(E), is considered to be a good substitute for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in medium-voltage gas-insulated equipment (MV-GIE). The HFO(E) gas in a mixture with CO2 can reach the dielectric strength of SF6 gas. Hence, the HFO(E)/CO2 gas mixture’s partial discharge properties are systematically investigated in this research work. In particular, a detailed examination focuses on the partial discharge extinction voltage (PDEV) and partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) under varying electric field conditions at different gas pressure levels and mixing ratios. The PDIV of the HFO(E)/CO2 gas mixture exhibited a linear-saturation rising pattern with both mixing ratio and gas pressure, mirroring the trend observed in SF6 when the HFO(E) gas concentration ranged between 25% and 30%

The Insulation Performance of Novel Refrigerant Gas as an Alternative to SF6 for Medium Voltage Switchgear

Gas-insulated systems are widely utilized in the electric power sector to transmit and distribute electrical energy. Sulphur-hexafluoride (SF6) has dominated gas insulation in high-voltage insulation technology since the early 60s. It is a greenhouse gas with a protracted lifespan in the atmosphere. This paper proposes an economical and comparatively more environmentally friendly R507 gas alternative to SF6 for medium-voltage applications. R507 has been analyzed experimentally through power frequency breakdown and lightning impulse testing to validate the performance and theoretical concepts. R507 has a very low liquefication temperature of −46.7◦C, but it must still be mixed with buffer gases such as CO2, N2, or dry air to meet the diverse liquefaction temperature applications. Various field utilization factors under AC and lightning impulse voltages are used in the experiments, along with different electrode geometries, including sphere-to-plane and rod-to-plane (i.e., quasi-homogeneous and inhomogeneous electric field distribution). For comparison, identical experiments are conducted with pure SF6. R507 gas was found to be a promising substitute for SF6 gas, with its dielectric strength being approximately 0.95 times that of SF6 gas. A positive synergistic effect is present between R507 and CO2, along with the good self-recoverability property of the gas mixture. The current research study serves as a fundamental resource for characterizing the R507/CO2 gas mixture insulation properties to be utilized in practical applications

Data-driven microwave imaging and processing techniques for monitoring neurodegenerative diseases

    No full text
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), affect cognitive functions and behaviour due to the progressive loss of neurons in the human brain. Unfortunately, although medicines can help relieve some of the symptoms, there is currently no cure for AD. Therefore, it is crucial to detect AD at earlier stages, to stop or slow its progression. Currently, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) are being used clinically to diagnose AD. These imaging modalities can provide information about malignant brain tissue’s shape, location, and size. However, they have many limitations. For instance, CT scans involve a higher dosage of ionising radiation and are slower and more complex.Conversely, MRI generates high-quality images with a good spatial resolution. The downside of MRI includes high equipment cost, system complexity, and longer time required for data collection. Therefore, there is a need for wearable, non-invasive and portable imaging devices that can monitor the progression of these diseases. It will allow patients to be treated more conveniently at their homes. In recent years, microwave imaging systems (MIS) have been widely investigated for medical imaging such as breast cancer and brain stroke due to their potential to provide low-cost, portable and non-ionising imaging devices. The detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases is a recent application of microwave imaging. A complete MIS consists of hardware and software components of equal importance for accurate image reconstructions. The hardware components include the wearable device, Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), and a personal computer (PC). The software components, which are the topic of this thesis, include signal processing and imaging techniques. The collected microwave signals are processed to generate images showing the object(s) under test. Numerous processing and imaging algorithms have been proposed for breast tumour and brain stroke detection in recent years. These processing and imaging techniques give promising results; however, they have several shortcomings that needs to be addressed before they can be used to detect or monitor small changes in the brain caused by neurodegenerative diseases. This thesis investigates the potential of data-driven signal preprocessing and microwave imaging techniques to detect and monitor neurodegenerative diseases, especially AD. The first stage of the study investigate and evaluate the existing confocal microwave imaging technique. Various algorithms originally used for brain stroke and breast tumour detection are implemented and considered to detect the AD changes in the brain. An integrated microwave image reconstruction (MIR) algorithm is proposed based on a modified form of Microwave Imaging via Space-time (MIST). Novel preprocessing techniques for clutter removal are integrated with the proposed imaging algorithm. The algorithm is validated on real lamb brain phantoms that imitate whole-brain atrophy. The results show that the proposed algorithm can detect and locate whole-brain atrophy with reasonable accuracy. The second stage of the study is the development of a frequency-based imaging algorithm that solves multiple issues with time-domain radar-based algorithms such as signal transformation, multi-speed and multipath. A frequency-based multistatic imaging algorithm is proposed that integrates each component’s frequency response to form an image. The algorithm compensates for both the amplitude and phase of the scattered signals. It resolves dispersion and attenuation issues and therefore outperforms the timeshift based algorithms. The algorithm is evaluated on both simulation and experimental data obtained from brain phantoms that mimic the atrophy and CSF changes. Quantitative analysis and comparison with conventional radar-based algorithms show that the proposed imaging algorithm can detect both brain atrophy and changes in the thickness of CSF layers more accurately. The third stage of the study explores how to optimise the image reconstruction algorithms. Multistatic imaging algorithms such as multistatic MIST and delay multiply and sum (DMAS) cannot produce images in an acceptable time due to intensive computation and sequential execution. A novel distributed approach based on Apache Spark, which adopts both data and algorithm in parallel, is proposed for efficient image reconstruction. The proposed parallel approach could be used to accelerate any computationally intensive algorithm on a cluster having master-slave architecture. The last stage of the study investigates ML-based methods to aid in classifying and monitoring different stages of neurodegenerative disease based on physiological and pathological changes in the brain. A novel data augmentation method is proposed to generate synthetic data for ML algorithms. Two feature extractions strategies are stipulated and compared. Multiple ML techniques are trained using raw data, manually and automatically extracted features to validate how well each algorithm could classify the AD stages. The results indicated that the proposed ML-based method could be used to monitor AD at its early stages

Analysis of the Accuracy and Completeness of SINTA Author Data Extraction

The advancement of information technology has increased the use of web scraping for scientific data collection, including from the SINTA (Science and Technology Index) platform, which provides researcher profiles, affiliations, publications, and citation data. However, scraping SINTA poses challenges, particularly when multiple authors share identical scores that trigger changes in display order. This instability can lead to duplicated or missing entries when using a single-pass scraping approach. This study evaluates the accuracy and completeness of SINTA author data collection by implementing repeated scraping as a strategy to handle dynamic data ordering. Experiments were conducted on the Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) affiliation, targeting 915 active authors. The methodology involved page-structure analysis, spider development using Python and Scrapy, sequential scraping through pagination, and validation of data completeness and uniqueness. A three-second delay between requests was applied to maintain responsible scraping practices. The results show that a single scraping attempt failed to retrieve all authors, capturing an average of only 877.2 authors (95.86%). Due to unstable ordering, repeated iterations were required. Through 4–8 scraping cycles per trial, all 915 authors were successfully collected without duplication. These findings indicate that for platforms with dynamic data structures such as SINTA, repeated scraping provides a more reliable method for ensuring data completeness and accuracy, supporting the development of stable and responsible publication-data automation systems. The advancement of information technology has increased the use of web scraping for scientific data collection, including from the SINTA (Science and Technology Index) platform, which provides researcher profiles, affiliations, publications, and citation data.
